Is it safe to say Dual Rulers was kinda ass?

Show wasn't very good, I'm sorry. Felt incredibly weak in terms of story and like most of the runtime was an assortment of characters I already like aura farming. Unika might be one of the most boring characters I've ever seen be given a four-hour animated series all about her. The action choreography was kinda all over the place and at times felt really badly boarded. The show was pretty except when it suddenly wasn't. They do the Gear racism stuff again and I can't help but feel like Daisuke has nothing left to say about it, which makes me wonder why that's Nergal's entire deal. Daisuke's been trying to make Sin the new main guy since Overture released a little under 20 years ago and it's just not working, man. He's not that guy.

 

Making the new character Bridget's girlfriend was a genius marketing push, though.

Yeah. It's just fighting game stories. They suffer from a variety of issues inherently, and at the end of the day, every fighting game story is just playing with action figures. 
It's not an easy thing to write a plot around, especially in this format. It doesn't help that Strive is obviously intended to be a bit of finale where everybody finds peace and happiness. Which fighting game franchises even have decent stories? Blazblue? Maybe? Kind of? I guess Melty Blood, but that's cheating.

I agree with the general negative sentiment regarding DR. The show felt like you had a bunch of good building blocks, but those building blocks consisted of concrete slabs, lego bricks, RAM chips, ink, and raw milk in an uncohesive whole. Unika manages to outdo May in being the worst written GG char, making Nerville an allegory for right-wing politicians doesn't really make sense when he has an actual good point regarding how dangerous and uncontrolled the sorcerers really are, I have yet to find any angle to make the whole alien ship stuff have any real contribution to the narrative besides looking cool... This show needs a fix fic or smth.

 

I disagree with that you can justify the show sucking with that it's hampered by being a FG when it's not a FG, but an anime. If GG canon is somehow so unconductive to story-telling (it's not), then make the spin-off non-canon instead of giving the fans DR.

Melty Blood also doesn't have a good story at all. Tsukihime has a good story but Melty Blood's attempt to iterate on it is pretty terrible. The only new characters are Sion (reheated nachos of every Tsukihime heroine combined with no real personality), Riesbyfe (exists solely to give Sion someone to talk to, since very few characters have a reason to give a shit about her), and Warachia (genuine nothing character).

 

Melty Blood 1's story is so ass that, after Nasu looked back at it and realized the garbage he created, everyone just sorta gave up and agreed to stop trying to give Melty a story. Every future game just gag reels.

This actually made something click for me - it kinda is an fg story. This shit is just Overture again! But with way more guys standing around doing nothing! And no Raven! Raven's like the only good part of Overture! What gives!

 

With DR in mind I kinda wonder how Strive's new battle pass story mode content will pan out. Strive's original main story was honestly pretty competent aside from Jack-O' having digivolved into a completely different character offscreen, then the extra story with Ramlethal was really boring, then DR was really boring. Dunno where the energy for main story went. I hope they bring it back, but from the clips we saw in the trailer it seems like the battle pass content might just be pairs of characters getting coffee and such.

I mean Unika's addition to Strive was to promote DR. That's arguably a substantial contribution it made. Depends on if you consider Strive Unika a substantial addition to the roster.

Just felt like an excuse to add Unika to the roster/story. In theory the idea is fine but I just don't like Unika as a character enough. I definitely wanted to love it since a Guilty Gear anime sounds like the most rad thing ever but I don't think they we're really able to make a proper anime.

Unfortunately yea, one of the most overhyped characters I've ever seen. I didn't care about Unika when the anime came out & I still don't to this day. I still find it really weird that WF is this cinematic ass super in the game but Unika having the power to do any of that seems to not be mentioned whatsoever. Also where did she get Ky's sword? Is that question ever answered in any capacity?

Nope none of that shit comes up in any capacity anywhere. It's like they forgot to include it in the show. Which would be crazy.

 

Maybe she got it off his corpse when he died in the bad future, or something?
