RaveSage Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Btw, to (maybe?) answer mightfo on what a ranbat is. You basically get points for your placement in a tournament. Such as... # 1st - 8pts # 2nd - 7pts # 3rd - 6pts # 4th - 5pts # 5th - 3pts # 7th - 1pt *Ninja'd from AI Blog* So it'd pretty much tell who's least free.

jetblaksuit Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) We could either do ranked battles or a danisen league. In RanBats we'd basically run a tourney on a regular basis and the top placers would gain a certain number of points. Then at the end of a predetermined "season" the person with the most points is the champion. If any of you are familiar with NASCAR its basically how that works. In a danisen league each player enters a character and begins at 1st Dan. Players fight other players within 1 rank of themselves on a single setup using a winner stays format. One win = +1 point, One loss = -1 point, +3 moves the player up 1 rank, -3 moves the player down 1 rank. Rankings go from 1st to 10th Dan, with special rankings after 10th Dan. After 10th Dan, players only fight other players of the same rank, and must instead get +5 points to move up a rank. -3 points still moves you down. You can enter multiple characters and try to level them up too. We have a somewhat small scene with inconsistent attendance. I think a danisen league would be a better option than ranbats for those reasons. Plus, if we get new players they're not automatically behind in points just because of when the come into the scene. Also a tournament seems slightly more complex to run. EDIT: They also talk about danisen leagues a bit in this episode of the iPlayWinner podcast http://iplaywinner.com/news/2010/10/1/iplaywinner-podcast-episode-09-whats-new-in-japan-danisen-le.html Edited November 10, 2010 by jetblaksuit
Mightfo Posted November 10, 2010 Author Posted November 10, 2010 Danisen thing sounds a bit better, but I'll let you guys who actually know about this stuff talk about it more and decide, I'll go along with whatever I suppose, generally sounds good. ALSO OSO/RONIN DID YOU GET KOF2002UM ARE YOU COMING FRIDAY SO WE CAN PLAY IT SOME also ronin are you gonna play much makoto next time? speaking of which, did you see those gdlk makoto combos? i like how her typical combo is just 1800-2400 damage but then off certain things she gets fucking insane damage ps what did you guys think of daemon bride also in case you didnt watch it and it's a short bit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-FZ1fyX5XE#t=1m30s ASH COMBOO
RaveSage Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 After reading what jet said, I'd have to agree with him on danisen > ranbat for now. Actually never knew how that worked till you explained it. We could probably do both as a season-long thing. Regular meets go danisen and every 2nd/3rd week or w/e we have a ranbat. Naturally, this all means we need to keep score. I have mad Excel spreadsheet skills if needed. edit: I kinda like Daemon from what I peeked at. As usual with me, I prefer to focus on one new game at a time though.
Frigiddeath Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 If we were going to do a danisen, it would probably be better to just do biweekly or monthly tournaments. Trying to manage a danisen and a ranbat is just a nightmare. I really don't care which one we do. Probably going to be busy all day Saturday, so no meet ups for me this week.
Ronin Jinobi Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 let's go for a danisen for now. We do have enough people to get shit done but we'd need more attendance/frequent attendance for ranbats. danisen sounds more...manageable. But real talk we need to reel in some more people in this area, I know they're freaking out there >:/ ah well maybe i should go be an ambassador for us on friday >_>
RaveSage Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Yeah, speaking of that (YuleCon), Adam's not going. I'll see what I can manage but odds are I'll have to sit this one out. Especially if I get employment for winter break. I'll probably just save up for the upcoming A-Kon next year. It's in downtown Dallas and easy to get to by train.

I go to a-kon just about every year, if you need a lift let me know. we can uber troll at bb, just like i did last year :3 well uber trolled then went to go play gg with the super secret gg society :O but yeah I'm still debating the friday tourney.

jetblaksuit Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 So it seems to me that the consensus is in favour of a danisen league rather than ranbats. We'd need to make sure someone keeps track of it all correctly. I figure that would likely fall to whoever is currently hosting? Thats the only way I see that we can be sure that someone is always there to keep up with it. I wouldn't mind keeping track when I host but, I don't want to volunteer anyone else haha. Also one of the things I'm confused about the whole thing is when you're at 1st Dan and you lose, do you get -1 still? and if so do you just accumulate a ton of negative 1st Dan points or does it max at -3?

I think it might just work in groups sorta. i.e. 1st to 3rd dan, 4th to 7th dan, 8th to 10th dan if you win one, you go 2nd, win another you get 3rd, and if you win a 3rd one, congrats you're 4th get the fuck off of this station. if you lose you just rotate to the bottom of who goes in which group, i'm gonna go with the assumption that if you lose your first round in the second group you get bumped down to first group again. edit:...yeah i think that sounds right. i dunno. it might be you have to do a whole 3 wins in a row, rotate, 3 wins in a row again, rotate, 3 wins again, movin on up deal. :/ Edited November 10, 2010 by Ronin Jinobi
jetblaksuit Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) Well I'm pretty sure thats not how it works actually. You need to get -3 to move down and +3 to move up. I'm just confused about what happens when you lose at first dan. Disregard that I suck cocks. I reread your post and I understand what you mean now. Edited November 10, 2010 by jetblaksuit

I'm just confused about what happens when you lose at first dan. I think for the sake of not having people with "negative" scores, we'd probably just have them stay at a constant 0, and just rotate to last in the 1st to 3rd down line up. Unless we actually take the time to tally up how many in a row wins they have to get to get from oh let's say -2(+5 to move up doesn't sound right :/)
jetblaksuit Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) Yeah thats works. So the basic format would go as follows. We have two setups dedicated to the league. Whoever is in charge of keeping track of things logs the outcome of the matches on a sheet of paper. The first setup is dedicated to 1st and 2nd dan. The second is 2-4. Once someone has reached 4th Dan they have to enter another character or play on (hopefully) the third setup. Once more people are in the higher ranks of play that won't be an issue though. I figure Mightfo can keep the first post updated with everyone's current rankings as long as whoever has the info keeps him informed. EDIT: As long as I stay healthy (because I'm starting to feel kinda shitty lol) the action is go to have a meetup at my place Saturday afternoon. EDIT part deux: Looking into it some more there's actually and answer to what happens when you lose at first dan:yaaay: Kyu Ranks: -At 1st Dan, if you lose 5 points you will be demoted to 1st Kyu. -From 1st Kyu, each further increasing losing streak takes you up to 10th Kyu (-10, -20, etc.). Ex. 1st Kyu at 0 -> -10 -> 2nd Kyu at 0. -Winning just 1 match at Kyu ranks resets you back to 1st Dan at 0. -Kyu ranks are considered on the same level as 1st Dan, so they may play up to 2nd Dan. Dannihaag Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I'd be down for Ranbats, might actually get me to practice, not sure what time I get off on saturday, but if we can commit to a time week to week, i could probably just ask for those hours off at work. Might have to work mornings but it would be worth it.

Might have to work mornings but it would be worth it. Thats part of the reason I'd prefer a Danisen system. Even if you missed a meet you wouldn't be penalized. You just wouldn't be accruing levels. You wouldn't be behind anyone and when you came to the next one you could just pick up where you left off. In general it just better facilitates the whole pickup nature of meetups. So like every meetup we'd dedicate and hour or so to Danisen, keep track of things and keep the front post updated. If we didn't want to you the front post we could make another thread somewhere on dustloop, use my Tumblr or even create a blogspot for it.
RaveSage Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I'm already working on an Excel sheet for it. The bare bones are almost done actually.
zreb Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) Danisen shit sounds good. Jet, are you gonna be at mig's place on friday? My sanyo isnt funny anymore > Ice might be coming with me for beatup Friday! Also, Rave/boombox/whoever: I bought mig's old ps2 fight stick ( this one, ) but I really don't like the actual stick on it so I went ahead and ordered a stick like his new one. I heard other people wanted it?! I paid mig $35 for it, would like to get at least part of that back for it :X Edited November 10, 2010 by zreb
RaveSage Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) Not enough $ atm. I'll get back to you if nobody else offers. edit: here's my current work on the spreadsheet. You can sort by player name, character, and anything else but as you can see the rank slot is empty. I'm trying my hardest to make the system work automatically as much as I can... because nobody wants to sort out 20+ people all day once we get that many players. For example, the ratio and point areas are set to change based on the number of wins and losses. So there's no need to edit those. This causes a small complication when players hit Kyu then back up to Dan, but I think it'd be fine to just reset their win/lose ratio when they break out of kyu. More on this later. Later: Ok, after re-educating myself on Dansien for the 20th time, turns out the way I tried implementing points was wrong since from 1 - 5 you have to have 3 wins to go up/down but from 6 - 10 you need 5 to go up but 3 loses still brings you down.
