KI: Yeah, it seems so. There are of course publishers who keep developers "like pets," but overseas there are more independent developers. For them, the goal is to make a hit, grow the company, sell it or do an IPO, and make lots of money. It's the American Dream.

Inafune does have a point about current JP developers, but yeah I think he's a little ignorant about Western developers. It's not like Western aren't guilty of just churning out the same shit over and over just to make money and don't bother being creative. That said, Clover Studios/Platinum Games is probably the best developer in the business right now, IMO. All of their games have been extremely creative and, for the most part, unique... which I can't say is true for 99% of the rest of the industry.

it also makes me laugh that he praises western developers' "technical abilities"; yes, because plugging in the models you made in an assisted 3d model editor to source/unreal engine is so fucking taxing and difficult.

When it comes to creativity I think it's best left to the single player games. If you want to talk about competitive multiplayer gaming, I think the formulas that they are using are pretty solid. Fighting games, RTS, and FPS games in particular. I don't think it's fair to criticize them for being similar to each other because for what they are trying to be (games for serious competition) they are exactly what they need to be. Usually when they try to do something weird and different in them it either doesn't change the game much (the new guard break system in blaz) or it just ends up coming out sucky (wager matches in black ops).
