sweetvids Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Congratulations Stefan. Too bad this couldn't be at a happier time for you, but that's great to hear nonetheless. So what are your plans now? Are you planning on moving back to Canada to find work or stay in Japan indefinitely? PhD perhaps?
rtl42 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 i think the "sensei" honourific is only for people who teach something (with a few exceptions). I hadn't originally planned any sort of graduation celebration because my wedding was going to happen so soon after the graduation ceremony, but since it got cancelled, maybe I'll go out with my wife for dinner somewhere. I'm staying here for my PhD: I passed the PhD entrance exam/interview in February (before my Master's thesis defense! lol scheduling), sent in the necessary application forms, and am just waiting for them to send some stuff back to me.
Cardinal_Sin Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 That's good stuff. You're well on track to being the first guy in the thread to be working towards (and getting) a PhD, much props. Perhaps someone else will become the first CEO to emerge from this thread though. Then again, I don't think anyone in the thread is an engie http://www.businessinsider.com/ceos-majored-in-engineering-2011-3#
BagLunch Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Well, before he stopped coming here Sean would've counted as the first... he's already doing PhD at UT. Which is where Clarence is from. PLACE OF THE BEGINNING DECIDE THE DESTINY
rtl42 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 oh is that where Sean went to? what's he doing his PhD in? i have a classmate from UVic who did his Master's at UT, and I think he's still there for his PhD. (in math)
BagLunch Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Sean's doing his PhD in computer graphics. Last I heard from him, he was getting his ass kicked by some course in Bayesian inference. This is probably the only fighting game forum in the world where the words "Bayesian inference" have ever appeared. I'd make a probability joke about that but I'm too tired.
Cardinal_Sin Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Anticipating mixups in any fighting game is all about posterior probabilities! It's just a matter of how deep the guessing layers go. A QTE like naruto / saint seiya game is like, P(A|B), third strike is like P(A|B|C), virtua fighter is like P(A|(P(B|P(BC^DE*FG^HI)) So Yomi.

I'd make a probability joke about that but I'm too tired. god damn bayesian inferences, the first time i ever had to come across that was in cogs200, in a course where the material made little to no sense it was one of the few things i actually ended up learning half decently. loved how they would just throw papers at us about it, kinda like http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:mefqZy7EeKkJ:web.mit.edu/cocosci/Papers/tics-theories-reprint.pdf+theory+based+bayesian+models+of+inductive+learning+and+reasoning&hl=en&gl=ca&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgKFF742GFjyoEnBiXteqQDf5-U84mkMyIUMSzEvC3_0BSTcPBKUabA1SM8rqTOXCMSKGjL-4z8nS2uty57D0AT5AZjX5Ri8vuoJ8zLNFlCmPJZQ1IXXZ3UGXqatunyqjV1shFm&sig=AHIEtbRo_Wzof08_NslywDt07P-xjpdp6g and of course, it'd be like my first time hearing about even such a thing, and the first exposure i get to is this paper accompanied by a non-insightful lecture about just exactly what the fuck this one that i pretty much had no idea (unrelated to bayesian induction and inferences) and had to go to a TA for hours before i understood even a margin of what was being presented was http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:wVUi-sfRoQIJ:www.cs.toronto.edu/~hinton/science.pdf+reducing+the+dimensionality+of+data+with+neural+networks&hl=en&gl=ca&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESjiUFOB_PUikp0rySuW1a4sSrP5r58eDV79D0NIy9HkBm-SFlhU3zuPfI0_eM56TKAFqYztCUWPr1ZA8a3MoOxKasF8Uh7PNgwkwkgWJqEMf8AmUuWAAh5ohmExwix1mPQlsgaf&sig=AHIEtbTTBViBcda-YJW6X4T-NWyqWv_eeQ i dont understand cogs Edited March 25, 2011 by geogaddi
Greed Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 cngrtz stefan It's like they went to Alexey for consultation. "yeah man that shit is so cheap. There's like nothing you can do about that. Please patch it". I actually laughed so hard at this
rtl42 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 thanks guys! Gabe: so i went to the UofT comp sci page, and on a whim, decided to read about the current "Profile" item, which is about someone there who won a research award. second paragraph in, it says: "Hertzmann is well-known in the field for his influential work linking three separate research areas within computer science – computer graphics, machine learning and computer vision. By focusing on the application of machine-learning techniques and Bayesian methods, he has resolved a wide range of computer graphics problems." ... i wonder who Sean is taking that class from lol. check out this vid, kinda interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pGH6-QY-sQ

Cardinal_Sin Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 ELECTION IN MAY GET READY TO BRAWL Harper XF3 vs. iggy/layton/some random jerk
BagLunch Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 ELECTION IN MAY GET READY TO BRAWL GALACTUS vs. iggy/layton/some random jerk Minorities vs Conservatives 3: Fate of Two Houses
BagLunch Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I guess by "minorities" I meant "minority parties", though the image of throngs of people of color clawing at Conservatives is also amusing.
Saru Kada Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 rofl minorities vs conservatives unfortunately, iggy is at pretty low health, since harper has been zoning him with attack ads since day 1 michael ignatieff: he didn't come back for you, he was snapped back in also, why on earth would you anchor duceppe when all he wants to do is leave the team? given canada's lack of team synergy, we should just dhc through quebec to ontario
Cardinal_Sin Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 this question period is OVER also, why on earth would you anchor duceppe when all he wants to do is leave the team? given canada's lack of team synergy, we should just dhc through quebec to ontario YOU'RE NOTHING WITHOUT THE QUEBEC VOTE
geogaddi Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 harper is XF3 always, he has the 2xbonus from proroguing parliament twice
Cardinal_Sin Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMtecqBQCqQ missing missiles I guess this is kinda self balancing in a way.
