This game is exactly why I retired from Capcom fighters. Unbalanced gameplay with copy and paste characters. Not to mention lack of innovation/progression mechanics wise. Such a shame because I had hope for Street Fighter, but alas....

Capcom fanboys logic:

Ryu, Akuma, Ken, Gouken, Dan, Sakura, Evil Ryu, Oni,

Their moves are so original from each other

I had hoped they would pick up where SF3 left off,but....

To me it`s more about balance than clones (though I`ll never understand why over 80% of the cast has a meterless invincible reversal wtf) KOF has clones galore and look how that turned out.

To SNK's credit, KOF successfully de-cloned several of its characters as the series matured, and they were bold enough to sometimes completely reinvent veteran cast members like Kensou and Chin. Ryo, Robert and Takuma were practically identical in '94, but became far more differentiated in later games, with Ryo losing his projectile, Robert becoming a Guile type and Takuma getting an invisible shockwave.

Let's not forget that SNK also changed Kyo's appearance midway through the series and gave his moveset a complete overhaul multiple times.  Compare that to Ryu, who looks and plays the same way in every. Single. Game.

To be honest, the frame data is often quite different, and that can make a huge difference in how the characters play.

After an eternity of playing Akuma, I tried some of the other shotos, and none of them did it for me. Airfireball alone makes a huge difference.

I think the SF4 cast is rather bloated at this point though.

Hi. I think this is my first comment in this forum (I dont remember if I had a old account... I follow dustloop from about many years time to time on the background).

Im a fan of fight games, I dont play very much videogames now, Im getting really older, it was my happybirthday some days ago and I get the ugly number of 36yo, lol.

Anyway I was curious about what CAPCOM is doing with this "bestseller" videogame. So I downloaded a version of ssfiv arcade edition. I LoLed a lot... this people (capcom) is doing the same shit from about, twenty years or so? Zero evolution... full of clonic characters... man, the power of marketing is here!!!! Reading this topic I noticed, fortunately, that people is not as idiot as I think sometimes cause you noticed the same shit (sry but I doubt too much about the understanding of other people... I have serious reasons, see the world how it works) so I feel a bit of hope on humanity after all (joking).

Well, I just needed to say that. (Another annoying thing with CAPCOM from the start is the strong political propaganda on their games... in ALL of them... think that this company started when cold war USA vs URSS so they put A LOT of political engineering in the background of all the games... this was the past but they TODAY have the same background cause they dont change about anything...this is so disappointed for a more mature-political point of view).

Marketing is a terribly thing... make some companies make money that doesnt deserve and, in the same process, many other valuable things fall in the abyss because dont have hte strong marketing campaign. Well, talking too much, exceeding the point of this thread. Anyway I hope you can appreciate it. Cya guys.

P.S.: sry for my english, Im trying :p

For what its worth SF3 failed commercially, but was also somewhat badly timed. SF 3 advertised a more mature play style, sadly the average SF fan didn't want more complicated characters & controls. Dark Stalkers had numerous revisions and sequels, but also failed to take off the way SF did. Capcom's decision to make SF IV more mechanically similar to SF2 / Alpha was a direct result of what has succeeded in the past. In other words it a reboot to the series "roots" and intended as such. Now that they lost MvC the question remains if they will reboot another fighter in an attempt to diversify their fighting game roster?

Sorry typo apparently. Strange, don't recall writing a trinity most have been ipad auto-correct. What word I intended though eludes me.

Before I commence snarky comments about the crux of SF3's mixup being cr.MK/karathrow or the existance of SGGK, would you please tell me what on earth this clause means?

I think its fairly self-evident :) let the flaming commence!

I am an ignoramus. Enlighten me.

In terms of complicated characters the art design was more mature from SF II in terms of controls I was just assuming the controls got more complicated aka parrys, the ex moves that allow you to juggle, and such. I am fairly a noob to fighting game mechanics so forgive me if Sf IV uses the same control scheme as SF III. Edit: and SF IV did not have parries.

So I just saw the MASSIVE list of bugs in this game. What the fuck? How is this shit acceptable? Why is this series so undeservedly popular in the west?

smh

Because it's easy to pick up, the cast has wide recognition and strong nostalgic appeal, it's in cinematic 3D, it's supported by every fighting game tourney scene in the West, and everyone else is playing it.

It's no more than a 3/5 star game at best though.

I really don't understand such division in the fighting game communities. Everyone has their preference though.

Capcom loyalty: old-school nostalgic players have been playing a certain footsie heavy play-style for many years and it has become their preference. Some really like hurtboxes over hitboxes. Silrin was a big one talking about BB tech time iirc, though the reward is much better in BB. Then you have the anti-anime or presumed anime community stereotypes that attach things to certain games. It's fairly ignorant but that's how people are. I would say that the anime/airdasher community may be a bit more diverse. I think there is a fair group of people that don't fit either modes.

I'm sure many airdasher/new-school players feel quite similarly about the diverse options and play-styles in their games along with the pressure based fighter. It's a quite different feel overall. Everyone isn't gonna pick up street fighter and feel at home especial with the trades on everything.

I play a bit of street fighter but probably don't more because I really haven't dug my nails deep in perfecting links. I do enjoy watching tournaments and playing multiple games, even though I don't play them. The division reminds me of a COD player I know that dismissed fighting games as boring and less complex than fps from a 2-d plan perspective and a lack of movement plan options and vs multiple people play. I found that perplexing but what can you say: he has no understanding of fighting game mechanics and their intricacies.

I have recently seen a few Capcom players play some airdasher stuff. I think Sanford was playing some Azrael a lot online before Ultra came out. I find TS Sabin interesting because he actually gave a real opinion on why he prefers certain games. He prefers footsies over set play. He seemed to have a decent BB Jin and Arakune for a few days of play. He's a huge fan of Arcana Heart and is sad that more people aren't interested in that game. He likes the clashes too which is a SF familiarity. He's playing Uniel and seems to be supporting that game while admitting he's not that good. Alex Valle has also competed in 6 Persona tournaments and still plans to play Akihiko. I think the old schoolers players still in the game have a changed perspective from their competitive days.

Maybe there are some really slow changes in perceptive, but I just think it needs to be from notable people in those other communities going out in new avenues. Reading the NLBC chat when Uniel premiered from USFIV only watchers was quite frustrating.

Haha, I'll probably grab the $15 update next month so at least I'm getting something free too eventually. I'm so bad at links it's sad. Gonna plink everything.

I'm sure Omega mode probably will replace the Edition Select side tournaments.
