ddrcata Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 Hey guys. I'd like to introduce myself to the dustloop community, and more specifically the A.B.A community. I've played GGXX before (dicking around at arcades with my friends because the game looked cool), but never seriously until about 4 days ago. After watching a couple of Dio's videos, and reading up on a couple guides (Moroha's and Poon's), I am certain I wanted to make A.B.A my main, so here I am! For right now, I'm trying to learn bread-and-butter combos. There's really no fighting game scene where I am (Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore), so I'm just practicing combos and basic moves until I can get back to my hometown of L.A., where I have Family Fun Arcade to get some casuals in (FFA YEAHH!!). I have a question about some general combos. In Moroha's guide, one of the staple combos show a rekka groundslide canceled into 2K, 5S, 2S, sj.K, jS, Keygrab. My problem is that when I go for the superjump, my j.K doesn't come out until I'm above the opponent, totally whiffing instead. In fact, whenever I superjump cancel, I'm whiffing all my kicks, no matter how fast I mash. Am I not superjump cancelling fast enough or something? Also, I have a little practice against live competition with the guys from my dorm. Thing is, they're all scrubs who mash 236K or 214K with Ky. Regardless, I seem to be losing to them a lot. I think my main problem is that I lack a good high-low mixup game, and I also don't quite know how to "crank that guard meter up," as it's put in a couple guides. Do I just keep comboing the opponent in the corner while they block until I can land a hit from my mixup? Also, Moroha, I saw your SE-R video. What does it mean by State vs. State? And it looks like you're on the Maryland team? Are you anywhere close to JHU by chance? If so, any chance you know of an arcade in the area, and would you be willing to meet up? Thanks for putting up with this wall of text!
Tage*Proto Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 Sounds like a timing or positioning issue. Make sure when that 2s makes contact your buffering in the SJ as early as possible. Also, make sure you are superjumping towards the opponent. j.k doesn't have good horizontal range, so you have to be close.
4r5 Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 Sounds like your not timing the j.K properly, probably doing it too slow. Or maybe positioning, make sure you superjump forward. But don't ask me, I don't play ABA. No arcades in Bmore. But it sounds like you're pretty close to UMBC. We got a small scene going on campus. check the MD thread http://www.dustloop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42 my little bit on the vs ABA matchup. ABA is a beast when she's in Moroha mode, but atleast she does some of the work for you. Make it hard for her to switch out, and regain her life. If ABA is running you down, a well placed InstantBlock or DeadAngle can win you the round. (wait a minute. this isn't the matchup thread.. oh well) edit, again: hey! this isn't the May forum, either!
why_suffer_ Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 rekka groundslide canceled into 2K, 5S, 2S, sj.K, jS, Keygrab. i might be a little bit dumb... but whats the point of this combo? isn't 6HS jc js jhs jd orbs bettOr?
ddrcata Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 I'm just practicing combos that were listed in Moroha's guide. 6H jc j.S j.H j.D orbs is another one I'm practicing as well as others. I don't think I'm quite at the level to judge what's safe/better to use in live match/tournaments settings seeing how I picked up the game 4 days ago.
why_suffer_ Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 i'm not judging)) just asking (ass king) lol
Moroha Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 How's it going Ddrcata, welcome to ABA. I still need to update that thread with intermediate/advanced combos. Since we had to get ready for SE-R2, and with school and other things, I've been really busy (And I'll probably be at Seasons Beatings II next week, too!) Anyway, that combo is a basic combo designed to get you used to FRCing the Rekkas and also net you a keygrab. If you find 2K 5S 2S sj K is not connecting, 2K, 6P (1hit), 2S, sj K generally works without fail, at least off a throw (throw, dash in 5K, 6P (1hit), 2S etc) and I don't see why the same wouldn't apply here. (Untested atm) But anyway. You beat stupid dorm Kys by blocking low, and then blocking high on reaction to greed saber or dust (Though they're probably not dusting and probably are greed sabering). You punish greed saber and murder stun dipper. You can win with ABA by cranking dat guard gauge and cracking it with a single hit (2k/throw/overhead/unblock/outhit), which, if you're pressuring well, you can really set yourself up for at least one of these to succeed. Sometimes people don't like blocking, which ABA likes even more, since she's got some of the most serious normals in the entire game. In summary (obviously) figure out what you think will be the best way to get those dmgs against your opponent and take a stab at it. We had two State vs. State tournaments at SE-R2, Maryland vs Alabama and Maryland vs Kentucky. We lost to Alabama 6-7, BEST JAM ALIVE!!! aka "jam so hype she has two vaginas" Doren2K ended up being their hero, and we beat Kentucky 7-5. There are no arcades in the area. However, as 4r5 mentioned, we do have a Guilty Gear community at UMBC. Every wednesday we run free tournaments to get people experience against a wide variety of characters in an outside-casual setting. It's good times - you should show up this wednesday! And get out of my forums 4r5, stop telling ABA players how to ... beat ABA. ;p
ddrcata Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 Dang, that's a lot of information! After going back into training mode and seeing how different characters reacted to different hits, I found that some characters DO get hit by 2K 5S 2S sj.K. However, a lot others don't, so I guess I need to practice other JC options. Awwwwww, effing Wednesdays. Wednesdays are my worst days, with a lab from 6:00pm - 9:00pm and tons of homework due the next day. Are you guys ever free from Thursday afternoon till the end of the weekend? Thanks for the advice so far everyone! Time to go practice some more!
Moroha Posted October 28, 2007 Posted October 28, 2007 My basic non-corner throw combo is throw, dash in close, 5K, 6P (1hit), 2S, sj K, sj S, Keygrab. I haven't found a member of the cast that it doesn't work on. The launch part works fine on everyone, and while you can sometimes follow up the sj S portion with sj H, sj D etc, sometimes depending on your character and the jump they might float away and you'll miss the keygrab. The lone S pretty much guarantees the grab. We get together when we can. We sometimes do casuals Thursday afternoons/evenings. The next few weekends for me are going to be pretty busy, with Seasons Beatings II next weekend, C3 the weekend after that, and then VTyme the weekend after that. But we'll figure it out.
Recna Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 I'm not sure if this was mentioned before but I found out earlier today against some friends that when you FRC Dangoku and back dash right away you get to keep the momentum from it and you back dash a lot farther than you normally would. I got almost 3x the distance of a normal back dash. It was more fun than useful although it really did throw my friend off when I first did it.
Moroha Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 So guys, Combofiend has made the switch from ABA to Slayer. I spent some time talking to him about it, just sounded like he likes Slayer's style more than ABA's. Whatever. Nobody's perfect, and apparently Combofiend is no exception! Just kidding. ;p For reals, nice guy. His Slayer's gameplay seemed solid, but he was dropping combos (lol, Combofiend). I think he'd only been playing him for about two weeks anyway. Despite having a real fucking solid outing at Seasons Beatings this weekend, I can't help but feel like ABA vs. Jam isn't in ABA's favor like the tier lists (And Flash himself, for that matter) suggest. Maybe I just need more vs Jam experience, but Flash is averaging like an IK on me a match. Maybe Flash is just crazy and I need to shut the fuck up and be a better player. How many of you guys are out there traveling with ABA for GG? Furix/TageProto/Metsuke/ABAcando/FaultyDefense/anyone else? Wondering if I'll be meeting up with any of you guys on the Evo2k8 trail. I'll be at NEC and Final Round for sure, I might be trying to hit Texas Showdown if I'm feeling particularly crazy. And Recna, I'll have to give that a try tonight or tomorrow, that sounds pretty funny.
Tage*Proto Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 I'm going to Omaha this weekend, MAY go to NEC still, not 100% out of the water, Final Round for sure, and Evo of course, maybe texas. I will tearing the trail up in 08, so you will see me. Combofiend's switch makes sense. Slayer is just.....better. In all honesty. He doesn't share the weaknesses ABA has, and pretty much plays the same way, maybe a little more turtle based, but I think that's preference. He also reaps more rewards for less tension. A smart switch if your looking to win and don't care who you use. Not my style though . I totally agree that Jam has the favor against ABA. her various frame traps, ability to do damage and knockdown any time she touches you, and the ease of parrying ABA's most important moves just don't add up to ABA having the favor here. Seriously, a mis-timed or mis-placed danzai will kill you. She has a excellent anti-ABA move in 2s. Just too many weapons leaves aba playing catch-up. And don't even ask about normal mode against Jam >_<. Other then that Moroha hwo did you play? Who did you beat? Who did you lose to? Details son .
Moroha Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 4th place. Read my blog update, it's in my sig. And I updated the 101 FAQ with more general information on ABA's Moroha mode throw.
Tage*Proto Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Wow, nicely done beating blacksnake man, his venom is fierce. Now there's no reason I shouldn't beat him in Omaha . How did you do against Sean's Baiken? I'm interested in that. Again congrats on 4th, I'll be watching how you fair in the future . Oh man and you can't skip out on the Colorado tournament lol. Free housing son.
Moroha Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Scorewise, I was pretty happy with how I did against SH_, I lost 2-1 2-1 so neither match was really out of my reach. By the same token, he's a real tough Baiken to deal with and I need more experience in that matchup. Also, I don't think I'll be making that CO tournament. It's during my Winter Break, and I'm thinking about vacationing someplace other than Colorado.
Tage*Proto Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Understandable . Hoefully I can follow your example in Omaha.
Tage*Proto Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Just got back from Omaha. Lot's of stuff, but I think I played really well. Me and another CO player got 4th in the team tournament. I believe I tied for 5th with Steve from ST. Louis in singles. Man a lot of these guys just were not prepared to fight ABA. I lost to Juicy G twice in singles tournament BTW . Vids were only recorded from the team tournament (sigh), but they should be up soon. Biggest problem I had was trying to get Order Sol/Sol the fuck off of me in normal mode lol. If I could keep them out long enough to mode transition then I could stand my ground pretty well. Sol's, Eddie, and Potemkin were the characters that gave me the most amount of trouble.
Moroha Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Grats on doing well in the team tourney. If you're having trouble dealing with getting out of normal mode, just play some casuals straight up in normal mode where the only way to transform is via combo into keygrab, it'll definitely hone your normal skills. It can be a bitch against OS and SO for sure.
Tage*Proto Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Yeah I generally take that approach anyway, as I feel generally solid in normal mode. It's just against Order Sol especially, normal mode just doesn't cut it.
Moroha Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 Hey Furix, do you travel at all for GG? Just wondering if anyone besides like me and Tage-Proto are running ABA on the circuit.
Kyle Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 I've got a purple keyblade for ya Seth. BTW Rockband FTW
Moroha Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 I've got a purple keyblade for ya Seth. :O Are you serious? <333
Moroha Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 So it's my birthday this weekend, and my friends got together and got an ABA cake! http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/7023/n15201625319733331152ve9.jpg She was delicious. lol
