I'm surprised I came in here to people praising Axl.  I laughed cause of how ridiculous it was.  

And then people are shitting on Rammy.  I quite like it.  

 

I plan on maining Sin, and I really like his voice.  

This will be like persona, and I won't really be bothered either way on which version the setup is.  I agree with all the Sol hate, that was bad. Not cringe worthy or anything, but.

May's 20, minimum. We're six years after her first appearance in GG. She's likely 22-23. Her voice sounds a bit too young for me, especially for a girl trying so hard to be perceived as an adult, but it does suit the "no one takes her seriously" element.

Good: Ky, May, Sin

Acceptable: Sol, Slayer, Millia

Bad: Everyone else

Garbage: Bedman,Venom, Ramlethal

I don't have a PS4 (*shakes fist*) but I did watch a play-through of arcade mode someone posted on YouTube.  Not the same as playing the game, but it's currently the closest I can get.

Sol sounds like a cheap Steve Blum soundalike.  Damn shame, because the actual Steve Blum using a similar inflection would have been perfect for Sol.

Ky's voice bothers me more than it probably should.  The VA is capable enough, but he sounds too prim and proper...  Too naive, I guess.  That might've worked for X/XX Ky, but I like the idea of him being a bit more focused and pragmatic now that he's a king.  I wanted his voice to have a slight air of someone who doesn't have time for anyone's bullshit anymore.

I like what I heard of Axl mainly because his VA seems good at his job.  I can see the heavy British accent getting old in a hurry, though.

I-No's voice... Man.  I want to like it so badly.  Her dub lines are pretty amusing (for some reason I find her shouting "Merry Christmas!" when firing notes absolutely delightful), and her voice isn't bad at all, but it's just not there.  Like others have said, it lacks the emotional range you'd expect from the character.  I-No should sound like a sarcastic, angry, horny lunatic; dub I-No sounds like somebody's mom who gets a little flirty after her second glass of wine.

Slayer sounds old but not decrepit, which is good.  Ultimately, I'll have to withhold judgment on the VA's performance until I hear his laugh.

Millia sounds... vaguely British?  The hell?

I don't like Ramlethal's voice at all.  I imagine the intention was to make her come across as robotic and emotionless, but she just sounds bored.  It's hard to tell if the problem lies in bad acting, poor direction, or a mixture of both, but somebody dropped the ball somewhere along the line.  Ramlethal never had a particularly intimidating design to begin with, and this voice makes her impossible to take seriously as a boss.  Justice is spinning in her grave.

None of the other characters really stood out for me.  Sin sounds pretty decent, I suppose.  Overall, yeah, I'll definitely be switching the in-game voices to Japanese before I do anything else in this game.

Speaking of that, Sol's current voice reminds me much more of Brian Drummond (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONy4BR68siw#t=193) as opposed to Steve Blum (which incidentally is shown in the video too). Still can't seem to get to used to it. But then again I probably need more exposure to it before that happens.

Well, the voice might grow on me. ...Maybe. The "I never miss a called shot" line sounded kind of cool in and of itself.

The thought occurs that, while the voices are either hit-or-miss (and in some cases it really shows), perhaps we're so taken aback by them because we've grown so used go hearing Joji Nakata's Sol or Junichi Suwabe's Venom?

You mean Ishiwatari Sol. I still can't get used to Nakata voicing him.

 

Haven't watched that much footage yet, but I kinda like what I've heard so far. Sol is going for full BADGUUUUY mood most of the time, and it's fine when it's appropriate. The rest of the time, you just assume "Well, he's a Badguy, it makes sense for him to talk like that", even if it doesn't match his Japanese voice. Also, he sounds like Sundowner to me, don't ask why.

 

Slayer sounds literally like Kayumi-san learned English and voiced him from beyond the grave. Literally couldn't be any better. 

 

Ky, Millia and Chipp sound pretty unremarkable, which means that they match the JP voices. 

 

I-No I need to listen to a bit more, but it feels like the VA was just too embarrassed to go all-out with her.

 

Sin is pretty great, pretty much how I'd expect a grown-up kid to sound. Unlike May: I understand that she's actually older than she looks like, but that doesn't mean that the discrepancy between the looks and voice is justified. Mind you, it's nothing too major, but I can understand why people don't like her.

 

Ramlethal feels like she's constantly switching between her "dan" and "yan" personas, and while she does have both in her, I don't think she's supposed to switch at the drop of a hat. I should watch some Japanese footage to compare, but I totally agree that the main reason she sounds wrong is the direction.

Sol's voice sounds like the VA is trying too hard to sound tough but to be honest (and I'm going to get some flak for this), that's kind of the impression I get from JPN Sol as well.

Venom...man just what were they thinking. I don't remember who suggested that in this thread, but if their purpose was to make him sound gay, that's just insulting.

Now that you mention, it does sound a lot like Karen Strassmen.

The audio quality of the stream must have been pretty low if people couldn't tell I-No and Milia apart.
