98 is considered the best KoF because no one likes XI, 94-97 are trash, 99-2001 are trash, and 2003 is trash. Out of 98 and 2002, 98 is the less retarded game, as well as being pretty balanced (I'm not sure on balance compared to 2002). or something like that, anyway. I don't claim to have been playing fighting games seriously for the last 15 years to know for sure. IMO, UM is the superior game, for a few reasons. It's looking slightly more balanced to me, and there are more characters, which I mention mostly because in KoF 98/2002 I always had problems finding characters, despite the stupidly large roster. So here I have 2 teams right now, and they're both using new characters. I'm leaving my original 98 teams alone so that if I'm playing on kaillera or GGPO I have those teams, and can just play them normally, instead of having to separate "I can do this in UM, and this in 98" in my mind.

I guess I worded my question wrong, but what I meant to ask is "how does the game feel?" If its stiff like KoF XI I'd rather not throw down 50$ to try it, but if it feels like Garou: MoW I'd be willing to try it.

It feels like 98...just better on some things...King of fighters CANT feel like Garou....Garou is quite different...and XI is about tagging, leaders, and all those things...so if u never played a KOF game before 2003, youre probably gonna think this one is stiff and slow.

Rugal got some neat buffs. I'm actually playing him now, they gave him so much neat stuff. Unlike 98 where he just felt crazy limited to me. Far C cancellable. Doesn't combo into anything though, I just go into reppuken. Headstomp super is faster. Still not really a great super but hey, it's more worth it now. Kaiser wave is pretty much the best projectile in the game. Rugal is the only character able to beat out krauser's kaiser wave. I'm playing him on a team of Rugal/Krauser/Saisyu because I like huge fireballs but only two characters have the kaiser wave to my knowledge so instead I'm playing Saisyu at least until I can find someone else with a huge fireball (who isn't AoF team because I hate robert and I'm playing the other two on other teams).

Have you tried EX Geese? He has Double Repuken, which has a pretty large hitbox from what I've seen (horizontal that is, they think they've jumped past the Fireball but they end up landing on it), as well as Double Air Fireball.

Necrosis: Nobody likes XI? Last I looked, it was huge in China/Taiwan, people were playing it a bunch in Japan, Koreans played it a bit, good amount of players in the States... 3rd world countries finally got to play it when they could download it and they seemed to put up a good amount of vids as well. 98 is considered the "best" for nostalgia and because most KoF's are flaming piles of crap, but XI is among the few good/decent ones. Certainly gives 98 a run for its money, though of course people will whine because it isn't exactly like 98.

no, they whine because its broken as fuck. not 2003 broken, but still broken enough. also, xi has faded into obscurity. last videos i saw were from gamers vision, and the files turned out to be a year old. not to say that i dont like xi, i think its fun, kind of.

XI is my favorite one, don't get me wrong. no one likes it though, because it's not 98. you said that yourself. Every time I've ever talked to someone about why the game is trash in their opinion it's always the imbalance of the game, which IMO is extremely exaggerated but that's what most people think. FS7: I play him on another team, and I was trying to avoid playing characters I'm already playing on another team. I actually decided that that particular team is gonna have EX Ryo on it solely because I know how to play EX Ryo and he's got a huge fireball (he's on a gimmick team of mine, Ralf/Clark/EX Ryo, team "punch stuff a lot," but that's a gimmick team that I play like a horrible horrible scrub).

XI's balance is exaggerated in what way? If you mean the quote of "everybody plays KGO" you'd be right. It's more like "everyone plays KG/someone else". There are more viable characters in XI than people think, but Kula and Gato still run the show. I find myself preferring 98 and UM because the gameplay is slower and you can play in a more methodical manner, whereas XI feels spastic and seems to leave absolutely no room for defense. Spacing matters more in 98, you have to think harder.

I guess im the only one that thinks 2002 is more fun than 98 or 98UM... I just like the roster and mechanics of 2002 more.

No, you're not... :keke:

The only reason I play 02: May Lee. >> So people, why is yuri so good? What does she have that puts either EX or Normal Yuri high up?

Are you talking about 2k2 Yuri or UM yuri?

Reason Yuri is so good: Her zoning is awesome.

No, I think this too. I like to abuse Athena in that game. Also max mode combos.

EX:

A saifa combos from lights, reflects, fast, anti airs, does everything

cr.B cr.A shinsho DAMAGE

Shinsho in general is great

great fireballs and air fireballs (you can do raiohkens anywhere now)

Still has fast super fireball, command throw, etc

Normal Yuri has that dash punch which is great with the cancelable sweep. Has normal shoryukens (EX doesn't). I still think EX is better though.

Also hey does anybody have the arranged soundtrack, or was it released?

This is now out on XBLA, but the port is, shall I say, unusual. There are none of those arranged songs or backgrounds (:(), and the win quotes after a fight are in Japanese (:wtf:). Also, there is practically nobody online, but the one match I did have was lag-free.

I'm not suprised, a little birdy told that SNKP handed it off to some other company to handle the port and well yeah, I don't get it... KOF 98 is one of if not the most popular SNK game out there and it getting a bad port is like pissing in the communities eye, as a major KOF fan I was (and still am) very displeased...
