Huh, Palette #9 is supossed to be a Persona-related palette, right?

...has there been anyone with purple hair?

I'm thinking Kandori, but his hair wasn't THAT purple. And

Kandori's Nyarlathotep doesn't look like Tsukiyomi does in that palette

So anyone have any idea as to why no one plays with Shadow characters in most matches I've seen? I know about their setbacks, of course, but a lot of the Shadow Fury combos look pretty effective and the really quick meter build as well as SP carrying over rounds sounds pretty good too. Are the setbacks like having no Burst or the 20% damage reduction just too big or is it that people really aren't used to them yet?

I dunno for sure. I did see few shadow selves in tournaments. Maybe it's because they think having a burst is more efficient than an overdrive. Besides I think the shadows can't do instant kills

I have no idea either.

This is most likely why it's not used as much. Or maybe it hasn't been explored very much. Or could be both.

As always, consider that most gameplay that we see does not encompass all gameplay in arcades. There are surely plenty of people playing Shadow characters, but little footage of it.

As for why that is, it's just speculation, but the reduced damage dealt doesn't seem like it would be a dealbreaker. However, the lack of Burst and moreso the lack of Awakening are probably bigger factors. Even with damage supposedly toned down, for most of the cast with 8500 or less health, a single mistake immediately can put you close to a loss. From airthrows that do nearly 2000 damage to decent CH confirms for 3000-4000 or FCs/swag 100+ meter combos that go for even more, plus no Burst to save you if you mess up...

Add in that most SB Awakening Supers do downright stupid damage if they connect. From what little I've seen, playing P4Suplex as a normal character is like playing an Arcsys game. Playing P4Suplex as a Shadow character seems a lot more like you're playing a mix of Chaos Code and Samurai Shodown.

I'd say the lack of Shadow character footage is simply because people are not yet used to it. One thing I noticed with a lot of JPN players is that, as long as they are playing with their yen on the line, they are going to gravitate towards the easier and less changed versions of the characters available. Of course, this is simply an observation made from the footage available and those only cover a fraction of the players available out there.

And I guess, on paper, Shadow versions are not exactly great.

-20% less damage.

-No Burst.

-Can't awaken.

-Need to blow all their meter (Shadow Rampage) to match the damage of their originals.

I've seen pretty good things from some Shadow characters, like Chie who can do 6k off 2A/5A and Naoto who basically death touches during Shadow Berserk.

Although not all characters can fully benefit from Shadow Berserk to become deathcombo machines, like S.Yosuke whose damage is already pretty low.

Since the Shadows have the old auto combo's mixed with the new changes, they won't feel like the previous version. If S.Aigis was exactly like P4A Aigis, then there'd be more of her. For some characters. the 20% damage loss can be a problem. Shadow Yosuke gets hit the hardest on this. The meter could also be a problem. While you need 100 to go berserk, during the match you need the meter to get a better approach or to extend a combo. Shadows have to keep it the whole time to get an edge. Awakening is good for the defense boost you get too. Shadows can't get it. Besides seeing your favorite Shadow's Opening and Closing animations, i don't see much use for them.

Are you taking into account their significantly faster meter build and the fact that meter carries over between rounds? I feel that those might be underestimated, and Shadow Fury isn't something to balk at either.

Yeah i am. I just feel like the pay off isn't there. Shadow Fury is good but it could have been better if they had invincibility frames like bursts on start up or like the few frames you get in UMVC3 when using X factor.

I kind of wish all the shadows had moves with altered properties or a different move or two (besides autocombo) to further differentiate them from the normal characters.

I know how you feel. Only thing i noticed from watching the shadow matches is that Teddie's old auto combo has changes in the 3rd hit. In P4A, Teddie's auto combo was slow enough for players to roll out of after the 2nd hit on block. Now it all connects on block.

I believe that's Reiji Kido with Bres.

Ah! That sounds about right, yeah. Couldn't recognize him without the MURICA gloves, but yeah. The persona really makes it obvious.

well I see someone made a video of arcade with NyarlaShoTep...turns out it's like a shadow arcade mode for the most part. since the video only had 4 stages. no idea of his final boss as of yet.

EDIT: and the final boss is;unsurprisingly...Elizabeth. So it is EXACTLY like a shadow arcade playthrough.

And this means, that we have to wait for the console version to know his ending.

or likely have no ending all together like SLB,Labby, and Liz and have the traditional "thanks for playing" stuff :P

Hopefully, one (or both, but I doubt it'll be both) of the Shos will have a story mode ready when the console version comes out.

Speaking of endings, anyone know if the Shadow characters have endings? (This includes Bull!SLab.)

Not gameplay related per se, but I just want to say that I hope ASW uses a story mode structure similar to BBCP. The separate character stories were such a chore being that a lot of them were practically the same.
