@Delta: You better have a Ranbat format and prizes ready to support a raised entry fee if you choose to go that route.

That is not the general consensus, otherwise players would have not stopped coming. There have been multiple complaints about there being too many games and not enough time in the event for casuals because of it. With this format it allows each game more time. Either way of having the old format or the new one, there will always be unhappy people.

Free tournaments have not only caused players to lack urgency when reporting to their games and going out to dinner when they're needed for a game, but it's caused people who actively play the games to not come solely because there is no entry fee, and thus no prize involved. $5 is the standard for most locals and even majors so that is why it was raised $2. If you want to raise interest for a game or try out a game you haven't played, casuals exist for that.

An event isn't successful when your top players in the region start to not attend and instead have casuals/meet up somewhere else, and that's the case here so something had to change.

Outside of a few random weeks where we had low attendance, it seems like the event as a whole has been growing rather than shrinking to me, I was keeping track of it for a while but haven't been lately. Is it really that many people saying they would have stopped coming? What scenes are avoiding the event? The consensus I've been hearing seems entirely, 100%, different from yours.

People going out to dinner is a hassle, yes, but I don't consider that a valid point here. Unless you've said something to them, no one has told them NOT to do it or started DQing them if they aren't there. It's not something you can really blame on the free tournament aspect.

I don't think $5 being the 'standard' is a good enough reason to just automatically adopt that format... In my view of the matter, casuals are casuals and tournament is tournament. In this position I see it as 'who are you running this tournament for?'. Right now I see it as being very nurturing a growing scene and giving players plenty of tournament matches to level up in, rather than catering to 'top players' who refuse to play unless money is involved.

My thoughts exactly rotanibor. I feel like we have a good thing going at rebel up, and in my opinion is changing for the worst

I would like to get a consensus about this tomorrow. I will gather everyone up once most of the people are there to discuss this.

There are two major conflicting views, and while I personally agree with that what we had going was good it was evident not everyone felt that way.

When the people you're making unhappy are the people who have stuck with the event all the way through, maybe you should rethink your stance. :^|

Free tournaments have not only caused players to lack urgency when reporting to their games and going out to dinner when they're needed for a game

If you DQ'd people for a week or two or adhered to times for when brackets for a given game will really be starting, they'd stop doing that. Guaranteed.

I don't care about entry fees, but I still think everything you normally run could run on time if you were stricter about it, or maybe didn't run as many overlapping games simultaneously. In my experience as a TO, if fewer people are playing a bunch of games at once, it can often be faster to run A then B then C until most people are out, then to run A and B and C at the same time.

Even things like a deputy continuing to run the tournaments while you yourself are playing a game would improve things a lot. For a game of BB that's 10 min wasted not advancing every tournament while you play.

Perhaps something like prioritizing matches for the game that will be next on stream, or something. Being just a bit stricter can make things MASSIVELY more efficient. I'll help, if you need it.

I don't know about other games, but good SG and GG players go. This is basically ignoring the people who have been coming the entire time.

If the "top players" (whoever they are) are the only people important to you, I'm not sure I can comfortably encourage people to attend the event. I try hard to keep the esports distinction between Players and Fans from impacting the FGC.

I certainly am not willing to drive there every time just to play one game...perhaps if the overlap were different (SG/GG/VSav - P4/BB/UNiB) it might be more appealing to me personally, but that's a minor point.

My wording was poor there, I didn't mean to imply the event was unsuccessful because top players specifically were not attending, but in general players have have lost interest in the event because of the problems.

This is the best solution that was offered, but as I mentioned I would like to talk about it to everyone in person. The schedule for tomorrow will be unchanged, but from there on something must be changed.

Theres a couple things i would like to chime in on regarding this event.  i totally agree that this event is here because of its format and free tournaments being offered.  i think $5 is a big jump and i see this only benefitting a small handful of people while alienating a large bunch.  i think there is a medium where you can possible make it $2 instead of $5 or offering like $1 entries as well.  i dont think the $5 mark is needed to keep people in line and on time, where as just having any amount, even small as $1-$2 would stop them from being tardy to their match.

its tough being a TO so i understand how it is hard to improve and make changes while keeping everyone happy.  being strict on showing up for matches should be the first step and i think implementing higher costs for tourneys should come second.  this event has been strong for a few years now and i hope you guys find a resolution.  good luck.

After talking to people tonight, I've found better solutions then what was offered previously and would like to try to implicate this instead. The previous games that were free (BB/GG as well as possibly VSav and Melty) will be $1 tournies now, and the games that are $3 will remain the same. As for tournament times I will try to go back to hour and a half or one hour blocks because running multiple games at once is more of a problem with us since there is so much player overlap between games. In addition we now have a secondary stream so games aren't forced to compete with each other to get stream time. This will definitely help with running all 7 games. I apologize to the people inconvenienced by the prior changes that weren't implemented and I hope this format works out for the better.

It was fun manning the 2ndary stream. I'm glad that it worked out decently, despite it being a last minute effort. The setup as you saw it was used for WNF and TRB.  I'm glad to see that it worked out for RUP as well.  If you guys liked it, i guess we can use it more, with Super's permission of course.

I would be interested to know who else would like to help out with the stream as well... so i can take breaks from time to time. A few tasks are needed.

1: Record each set of matches. (makes it easier to upload to YT)

2: Update the names and score.

3: Update the stream layout as necessary (switch between game, camera, etc.)

4: Commentary as necessary.

LMK if you guys are interested. Even taking over for a few sets of games would be great.  A great benefit in being in the chair is you have the lead to talk shi... i mean commentate.... as you assist with the stream.

I am totally willing to help with the secondary stream assuming I am not on the primary one. (Mando reserves the right to pull me in when he wants though this hasn't happened the last couple of times.) I think ZIP of all people is also willing to help, we should ask him on Thursday.

That being said I believe Zip and I missing the next like 3 (?) Rebel Ups due to prior commitments (conventions we actually got tickets for).

Numakie, I can run the 2nd stream for you when you have a match like I did this time if Binkley is not here, but the more people we can get to help out the better. If we want to finish all 7 games on a timely manner from now on we need people to help out! And huge shout outs and thanks to Shtkn and Vynnara because they've always been helping me out run brackets when I'm busy with a match.

I had fun last night. I'll make an effort to try and advertise this more on Twi and FB to increase our ranks.

Delta: Is the next RUP schedule gonna be similar?

Hi guys! I'm taking the plunge and making the first step to learn these games (like creating an account here) so I'll be there on Sat.

Unfortunately, I am a total newbie without a console and PC to practice or even study in. Are there any kind gentlemen/women/spaghetti monsters out there willing to help a poor soul like me when I get there? :(

Hey whimsee! We have some casuals stations throughout the day where you can play against people and if you need a stick/controller, most people are more than willing to let you borrow one. In the worst case, the arcade can lend you one too if need be.

Good to know! Thanks for the heads up. :)

Hope to show up to a Rebel up in December before Christmas! :D

Yeah same here! I was planning to go to one this month but current circumstances have prevented me from doing so. :(

I'll be attending on December 13th, and it will be my first time going to any kind of fighting game event. I'm quite bad at fighting games, so I'm looking forward to learning a lot. If needed, I can bring a ps3 with JP BBCP and NA AquaPazza installed and/or a copy of JP Uniel.
