I dont think we should be talking about buffs/needs just yet for ky. Why should grinders stay out for THAT MUCH LONGER anyhow?

He doesn't need extra longevity to grinders, because durandal calls are ridiculously good, almost stupid good when used right. What with them blowing up venoms balls, zato's drunkard shade reflection, potemkin's FDB, and other projectiles like gunflame.

Anyways these observations and opinions are based on what I've seen in the game so far. And Durandal Call more than makes up for the 1-2 seconds that grinder seals stay on the screen.

An extra second on seals would be unnecessary. Most of the time, you throw a Stunedge through a seal right after placing it, anyways.

If you're trying to use seals as real estate on the other side of the screen, then yeah, they're not going to work well for you. But that's not really how they're supposed to be used. It's better to think of them as a way to cover a large area directly in front of you rather than as something to be used from a long distance. That kind of strategy wouldn't work well even if they did last longer, because the other player could just react to your fireball and avoid it entirely. You could YRC the fireball and punish his approach, but you can already do that without having a seal onscreen.

Seal oki is already pretty nuts and doesn't need to be any better. There's a ton of ways to get airtight seal oki both midscreen and in the corner as is (throw -> seal, any re-stand combo, 2H -> seal loop, etc).

I don't think Ky really needs anything. His representation in tournaments is certainly not representative of his strength as a character. The reason few people are playing Ky is not because he's particularly weak in any area, rather because other characters can do things just as well/better for less effort (Sol's damage, Faust's pokes, Zato's oki).

If you remember any matches where some good uses of them happened think you can link them? I may have just seen poor usage of them from the misc videos I watched.

Youtube: Fino vs Ain Xrd, though Ain has never been the best Ky player, you can see how the matchup has shifted simply because of the threat of Durandal Calls causing hard knockdown, and/or blowing through his projectiles.

Ky is still the second most played character, so despite his average showing its not like people dont play him

Don't put too much stock in the character usage chart you see in videos. That's taking data from every cabinet in the country, and I think it even specifically excludes character usage during Event Mode.

Also keep in mind in the top 60 players for highest RR there's only 3 Ky's and the highest is Ain, who isn't much of a specialist.

Ain has been playing ky since AC, he messed with pot for a who though. Machaboo is too busy being top tier with Sol though.

ain's been around since reload and machaboo stopped playing almost 2 months ago

and an extra second on grinders wouldnt really do anything useful

Machaboo stopped playing GG, or Ky two months ago?

And that's a surprise about Ain, I thought the reason machaboo was better than him was because Machaboo has more exp than him.

I don't know where "Ain isn't a specialist" came from. I run in to Ain pretty frequently and I have only ever seen him play Ky in both +R and Xrd.

Granted, I don't think he takes Xrd as seriously as +R. The one time I played him in Xrd I nearly won, whereas in +R I can barely keep up with him.

machaboo stopped playing xrd altogether

not really a surprise since most top xrd players go back at least that far and machaboo is an overall stronger player, that's why he's better than ain

Posted

most old players arent or stopped playing xrd because people at game centers pick their opponents even when 1 credit is like 50 cents

I never said Ain wasn't. just that Machaboo really shows off what Ky is capable of compared to Ain is all. Ain's still an amazing player.

Speaking of which, his sets in casuals shows he's really leveled up in Xrd.

Falling j.k seems to have cross up potential: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRi1BAMDQXs#t=661

QWERTY, could you test that out to see if it's possible to consistently crossup with a falling j.k on oki?

Posted

j.K always crossed up in the old games.

However, in xrd I assume it would have to be done very close to the ground in order to continue to combo since you can't j.K > j.S vs crossed up opponents anymore.

Does xrd ky air stunedge auto JI when he does a yrc? Actually, do any moves still do that? I know JI is still in the game but I don't know about auto JI

I'm pretty sure it doesn't JI, but you retain whatever jump option you had.
