Ottawa: Why have fundamentals when you have gimmicks?
Essay replied to Freezerburn's topic in International
Hurray! I was afraid of the alternate scenario. :^) I oughta be at Gonq circa 7:30, the usual on for a work night. Only going to bring a stick on account of the forecast though. -
I definitely see where you're coming from, and I'm definitely not saying we should abandon 2A or anything, but I find I really do notice the extra range. At distances where an stationary 2B and a dash 2A will just wiff, dashing the same distance and 5A'ing will hit at just the tip. To hit with the tip of a dashing 2A, you're introducing a bigger gap in your approach. I'd just think of it as a matter of losing a frame or two early on, versus losing a frame later, and then mix up between the two (and everything else) to keep things fresh.

Great post. I've been reaction-DP'ing what I can after the super flash and CS'ing into full combos, but this helps round that out. I figure stuff like point-blank Merkava EX arms might still be better better punished with DP if you're worried about it crossing-through B+C and escaping our punish-range, but the two together seem to cover a lot of bases. According to our frame data, aren't they the same start up, but with 5A having the better hitbox for poking? Unless I want a mashable move, I feel like the trade off of 1 frame recovery on potential reverse beats can be worth the extra 20% horizontal range for space-control. I'm not finding anything in this game that 5A's hitbox wiffs over, and only a few things 2A's hurtbox ducks under, so it's worth considering.

Like I thought, going to be skipping on Gonq this week. Watch this be the week my monitor/console was actually going to be used. -

Sounds good. We should have some Dustlüpers there right from 5PM when Bruce opens the room, with others stopping by later (~7:30 myself). -

Gonq Battles results! For whom does the UNIBEL toll? That would be Mr. Sparkman. Under Night In Birth EXE-oh-yeah-Phil-owes-me-a-Latte results: 1) David A. 2) Lofo 3) Rawal ??? BlazBlue ChronoPhantasma results: 1) Essay 2) Bruce 3) David A. 4) Sage 5) Livewire 5) "Rowel" 7) Dagwood 7) Rigel 9) Lofo 9) Will Guilty-of-being-distracted-by-new-anime-hotness-and-starting-waaay-too-late Gear endurance grind results: Collusion ban) Lofo Collusion ban) Sage #1 in your hearts) Essay 4) Dagwood 5) Hash 5) Krackatoa 7) David A. 7) sleepy Rigel Personal Ultra Street Fighter IV results: I land a combo with four 1-frame links a row in casuals with Vega, the powers-that-be catch wind of this, and conveniently "forget" to add me to the tournament bracket. I'll never escape anime. Seriously though, it was great seeing some old and new faces alike as well and random interest from the Capcom players. Thanks for coming out everyone. Yeah, if we're going to Toronto as a group, we usually talk about it here. Toronto's more active on Facebook and Twitter though, and I try to keep my eye on that for us. -

Tomorrow's pretty anything-goes tomorrow on the organizer's end. He mentioned he imagined it being just casuals until at least 1PM. Colin, Phil and I will show for 11 or a bit after with 1.5 setups, 2 xbox sticks and 2 dual-mod sticks. Hopefully we can snag a CRT and a Gonq BenQ and have 3 airdasher setups. And get some anime streamed! -

Actually, I've been so busy, I just realized the organizer never got back to us on the details for tomorrow's tournament, beyond us having the room from 11AM to 9PM.... I've texted him to see what's up, but it looks like it's now on us to decide when exactly to meet and run our tourneys. What works/doesn't work for people tomorrow? Post something, or risk me getting arbitrary and picking some random times for the tournaments before I go to bed! But to answer Ryufujin's question, we're having a Chrono Phantasma and Accent Core +R tourney tomorrow alongside Ultra SFIV in room e206b of the Algonquin College Student Commons (2nd floor, above the Starbucks, past the study lounge). There'll be a streaming station as well (which we should probably show for early if they're going to prioritize it for SFIV). Otherwise, on Thursday nights, from 5PM to midnight, we either meet in that same room or in the large office next-door. -

It's never going to be this last-minute again. Someone on Shoryuken was organizing the whole thing for the first and just added anime by assumption without talking to us. Then they didn't get an OK from the college until last week, and held off on the announcement until then. *shrug* It's more like a barrier block button without the push-back that, if you tap in time with the hits, acts like an instant block and reduces your block-stun. Has a pretty satisfying feel to it, tbh. -

I was there. Lost my voice shouting "USA!", "GalileoooOOOOO!" and the ironic "LI-TCHI SUCKS!" all weekend. Finals were the greatest show I've ever attended live. St1ckBuG/Jyosua's Thursday late-night salty suite was pretty entertaining too. Everyone was throwing bets around like crazy and getting their whisper-shout/golf-clap hype on around the streaming station at 3AM. I randomly took a game off a Japanese Jin player too, which boggled my mind, but boosted my fragile ego enough to play the tournament with confidence. Definitely stop by Gonq; we don't bite. We're bound to have UNIB at gathers once it comes out. I think Ian is double-dipping for just that reason. I'm not normally a French Bread player, but I'll give this the old college try just in case it clicks. -

I live in Kanata. I've only been playing BBCP for 3 months, but I've been playing fighting games for years and should be able to help you with some of the fundamentals. Our general fighting game meetups are in the west-end as well at Algonquin College. If you're free Thursdays from 5PM-12AM, come on out and get some CP in. -

Apparently Pritz is running a Ultra/CP/+R tournament in 10 days and never considered posting here lol. Here's his poster. Hopefully we'll talk to him tonight and find out details. Otherwise, Ian and I should arrive at Gonq with the makings for an anime setup tonight, hopefully a little earlier than usual. If you're lurker who's never made it out, that's the room listed on the image above, or the room next to it, both above the Starbucks in the Student Commons. -
I asked, and Mr. Wizard told me it was an outright ban on all Cronus Devices, despite the rules only mentioning "Cronus Max" devices. I imagine for a side tournament like ours it's up to us though. (?)

My last Gonq before Evo tomorrow night. Come whip me into shape so that I don't tarnish our fair city's name. Is a monitor still the biggest priority for me to bring along, or is anyone who normally brings a consoles not coming this week? -

First of all, shoutouts to every single person in the building for pulling off an event so godlike that I still want to write about it at 6AM after driving all night. Ottawa had a blast. More specifically, shoutouts to: - XAQshinor for bringing godlike Dizzy play, despite the sunk costs driving New York out here - Mahouko for going full on info-session on me in our enlightening sets - Zidane for playing the heel like a boss and giving us all someone to aspire to beat - St1ckBuG for bringing the limitless hype, and enabling Zidane's final form - Digital Watches for being a stand-up guy, and beatable... except when he's sober - Lord Knight for the hype Kokonoe show, plus our VSav first-to-five with all the thoughtful commentary that followed - Psychochronic for keeping me honest in Vampire, twice, and making me want to put in work again - Chachaman, Mishou(sp?), Bill and the others I played in tournament for holding my attention to CP as long as they did - Unsanctifier for the Slayer experience - Steb for finally not dodging me in GG (next month, there's no escape ;D) - Rhannmah for the kind words and keeping me scared enough to actually drill mirror-match strategies - Brice for reminding me to play from the heart (even if he was really just encouraging me to lust over hand-drawn girls because his sponsor gives him a cut or something) - pochp, DerQ, town-crier Kaeru, Rurouni, and WakeupDP for the parts they played in taking care of logistics and generally being damn fine company - Psykotik for the chill and pleasurable chats, and the always-marvelous examples of how to approach games - My Ottawa peeps for just being Otherwise, I just want to say: regardless of who or what is single-handedly killing the scene, this scene is single-handedly killing it.

Good question. For my car, we haven't really talked about it, but for monthlies we usually went in the morning and drove back late, so I'm assuming that's what we're doing again. I've got both the Friday and Sunday off though if there was some other option, but I'm pretty sure that every Montrealer's couch is loaned out to someone at the moment. Not sure what car 2 was thinking. -

Well, it's official: I'm carving out this summer for anime games now. Toronto last weekend, Montreal in 3 weeks... and now Vegas for Evo. It's not like I needed to save for a computer that doesn't randomly crash or anything.... Regarding UMAD, how's the interest level and people's availability right now? Can't remember where I left off offering up seats in the ArcSuzuki.... Dev and Ian have expressed interest in holding them spots, and Bruce was interested, but willing to concede his place to Colin or Phil if they both want in. Anyone else fiending for transportation that I haven't accounted for?
