[Xrd] News & (Theoretical) Gameplay Discussion
Suzaku replied to Shinjin's topic in Guilty Gear General
Unless I'm mistaken, it means you can Roman Cancel anything (movement, attacks), but I've already forgotten the actual wording used (I've been up all night and am on my way out the door). SRK's is probably more technically accurate since my knowledge of the Japanese fighting game terms is not entirely complete. -

Ties A tie occurs if there is a double knockout or if the players have an equal amount of life when the time is up. If the match is not settled in 3 rounds, a 4th round (final round) begins. If the match cannot be decided by the end of the 4th round, the game is over for both players. Clashes result in one of three scenarios: Normal Clash: When attacks of similar strength collide, both attackers can act immediately. Repel: When attacks of varying strength collide, the weaker attacker is repelled and briefly unable to act. Danger Time: When powerful attacks collide with neither giving way, Danger Time is briefly activated after a special cinematic. The first attack to hit during Danger Time will be considered a Super Counter and deal massive damage, making it crucial to take advantage of this opportunity. http://ggxrd.com/system/ Source: Note: These translations borrow heavily from the wording in Aksys Games' official Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus manual. Fuck it, I'm going to go ahead and start work on translating the system page. Most of the wording is the same as it's always been, and that stuff has already been translated several times by the localization staff. Thanks. Let me know if you see any other mistakes in the command transcriptions. -
Translations for the official website. Story Backbone In the year 1999, mankind completed the scientific theory of limitless energy, dubbed magic. However, man did not discard his ignorance upon obtaining this wisdom. The very magic meant to usher in world peace was instead leveraged as a tool of war, and in time the forbidden biological weapons known as Gears were created. As if to condemn these thoughtless deeds, the Gears developed a will of their own and turned their fangs upon humanity. The Crusades, a centuries-long struggle for survival against the Gears, finally ended when mankind sealed away the Destroyer, Justice. Though man emerged victorious, many threats yet loom large in the shadows of that hard-fought peace, threatening to engulf the world. And so mankind must continue to atone for the sin of magic. Main Story October 21, 2187 at 12:12 A young woman identifying herself as Ramlethal Valentine declares war upon the entire world and all its inhabitants. There was not a single individual, organization, or country that took this as a laughing matter. This was on account of the prior Baptism 13 Incident, during which the United Kingdoms of Illyria were invaded, for the herald of that onslaught had also referred to herself as Valentine. Now, in order to ascertain the truth of these events, the world takes action. Source: http://ggxrd.com/story/ Characters 13 playable characters! Thanks! Fixed. Makes me wonder if they're taking Venom out and giving Ky a version of his mechanic... Grinder Seisei and Ball Seisei even use the same kanji for "Formation." It was already confirmed to take place at least a year after GG2, the copyright date on Sol's new sword is 2186. Ky's also got "Tirana" printed on one of his buckles; Tirana being the capital of Albania, aka Illyria. -

Ky Kiske Allow me to teach you the way of the thunderclap! Deadly serious, honest in work, truthful with others and devout in his morals. A firm believer in justice, eternally trying to help those weaker than himself. At the same time, he possesses a fragile mind that quickly erupts when he encounters anyone who breaks his rules or disrupts his order. In other words, he has a hard time dealing with freedom, a fact he has yet to realize. Millia Rage No time to blink! A cold, reticent woman, nothing ever appears to interest her. Indifferent towards her feminine side, perhaps because of her assassin upbringing. Sees everything in terms of black or white, and rarely makes a wrong decision. Although her mind is like a machine, there is still a little human left in her, and she is tormented inside by the recluse she has become. Suzaku replied to Shinjin's topic in Guilty Gear General
I'm not big on the competitive scene, but I'll go ahead and drop my two cents. I don't think that Guilty Gear is unfriendly for beginners -- it's actually really easy to pick up. Most of the commands are easy to execute, the gatling combo system makes combos pretty much effortless, and you can sometimes RC and even FRC -- effectively -- on accident, if you mash buttons. It's flashy and frantic, and you can double jump and air dash and do all sorts of stuff without much difficulty. I don't think it needs to be "dumbed down" in any way to make it more accessible, but I also think that the technical difficulty can be reduced without hurting the strategic depth, and could possibly even improve upon it. The real issue is introducing new players to a competitive scene that already has a lot more experience with the franchise, and the discouraging effect that can have. From a design standpoint, I think that's largely an issue of matchmaking, and ensuring that users have ways to learn how to improve their technique from within the game itself. I personally think an interesting approach would be to integrate challenges, achievements, and tutorials into online play. Say, offer a player a tutorial for how to perform a key mechanic, give them a challenge against the AI to pull it off a few times, and then offer them a challenge to perform it a certain number of times in online matches (while winning the match). When they complete it, they'd basically get a medal (which can be improved through continued use of the technique), and from then on their proficiency with the mechanic will be taken into account when matchmaking. So, for example, players who don't know how to RC generally won't get matched with other players that know how to RC until they themselves have started to learn it. At the same time, the game offers an overt incentive for players to learn the technique. The other issue, of course, is just the community in general. I think after so many years of BlazBlue, and now Persona, Xrd is going to attract a lot of new players. There will be a lot of people trying Xrd who will have never played a Guilty Gear game before. So the question is: do you want the community to be accepting of newbies, or do you want it to be elitist? -

Yes, technically, though it's written without the accent in-game. Right, Sol's sword has the patent date of "Jan 15 2187" and Overture took place in 2186. So it's at least a year later, maybe more, depending on how long it's been since Sol filed that patent application. -

Sin and Raven seem like they'd be shoe-ins, to me. Raven's been around since X+, and has been playable, but not in a fighting game. Sin's a pretty major character in his own right and was sort of GG2's flagship character. Maybe Valentine, there's supposed to be more of her out there. I'd like to see something more than just a blank, emotionless copy of Aria, but they could perhaps use a version of Valentine as an interesting stand-in for Justice. That Man... I'm not holding my breath, but who knows? Gabriel is supposed to be really strong (he gives Chipp a beatdown in one of the novels) but I'm not sure if there would be enough interest. Fanny would be interesting, but I'd rather see Faust/Baldhead. Crow is interesting in that he's pretty much the only representative of the PWAB that we have. He's also got the same voice actor as Raven, and a similar name, which is weird. Plus it's hinted that he's Japanese (real name Kurou Kuruwaba, 郭羽 九郎) and that he knows, or knew, Johnny's master, and is regarded as a traitor. I could see him being one of Hirofumi's former students, so he could be a swordsman. It's hard for me to imagine Paradigm being playable, given his weird proportions and fighting style. Izuna would be cool, but I think there are other XX characters that would fill a similar purpose on the roster and have more fans. I certainly don't envy whoever is making the decisions on the roster. But, hey, maybe it being in 3D means that they can create more characters more quickly. -

I think the one on Sol's glove is just nonsense chicken scratch. Ky's got "Tirana Fa??" written on one of his golden buckles, which is clearly visible in closeup. Tirana is the capital of Albania, present-day Illyria. So Tirana is most likely the capital of the Allied Kingdom of Illyria in Guilty Gear. -

Well, there you have it. I didn't even think to check what date was on his blade. So that pretty much confirms beyond doubt that this is post-Overture. If Ky's got the Thunderseal back, that almost certainly means Dizzy has been released from the time seal. -

Xrd (pronounced "Iguzaado" / "Igzird") is a combination of "X" ("Iguzu") and "3rd" ("Saado" / "Third") so it would almost certainly be after GGXX, and possibly after GG2. Also note the three intersecting Xs floating behind the logo. -

It's just a new part of his character design. He's had similar cross designs on his clothing in some of Ishiwatari's other illustrations.
