NEW ENGLAND THREAD *(A fusion of states and Shit talk)*
Mindgam3 replied to Otakuchin's topic in Offline Community
A meet up next Saturday would be most excellent. If it were to be announced, we could adequately plan a day of great merriment. On a side note, I really like everything they've done with the presentation of BB:CS (The exaggerated shading in the character's pixel art just looks too good). But Arakune now has near 100-hit loops at midscreen, and the announcer is absolutely terrible. It seems like the wait for a next-gen GG will be longer than I initially thought A video to complement my claims. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAQChYekJ6Q#t=2m48s But hey, we have SSFIV to look forward to...right? -
So, who's planning on attending this week? I know I am, provided I replace my car's front brakes today or tomorrow like I'm supposed to do.
-
The dates have been finalized for quite some time. But before remaking the thread, Vierge wants to talk to the fellow in charge just so we can clarify what games are going to run and at what times. I can tell you right now that we want to run whatever the players want to have (We'll most likely end up with GGAC, SFIV, SCIV, HDR, BB, and Tekken 6 in the end, but then again, it's what the players want). We'll have a website with the information available when all is said and done.
-
Here I was expecting that this would become some huge ordeal. Vigilante and Kona, thanks for being so flexible with the date, since we cannot reschedule the weekend of the convention with the University at all. You guys are awesome. I will pick up some flyers the next time I go to BG and distribute them at the University as soon as the Spring semester starts in mid-January.

Well, this is a coincidence. I wouldn't expect anyone to remember (since the thread was apparently trimmed because of inactivity), but the tandem of nerd clubs at UConn are supposedly offering essentially the same tournaments at UCon@UConn. This happens to take place February 5th-7th, which overlaps with this tournament's schedule. [Vierge Hijack!] This was actually a surprise to me! Since Uconn is literally, like, 15 miles away and (ideally) hosting the same tournaments as well. Would people prefer to have tournaments earlier in the day at Uconn (if they were to go, of course) So you could ride up there and be back in time for Battlegrounds tournaments, or have 'mirrored' tournaments. I.e, since Street Fighter IV is on Saturday, we host it on Friday. I'd still have to talk with the head hancho in charge of Ucon@Uconn, But I'd really like to work something out to best suit the player's interest.
-
So, as of today I am done with finals. I will be leaving at around 1:30-2:00pm tomorrow, which means that I will get home at around 3:30~ish. I'll probably then pick up the local fellows and head out to Hartford at around 5:30-6:00. Mugen, are you still up for tomorrow? If so, how does 7:00pm at your house sound for a pick-up time? I also have room for one more person if you want to bring someone along. Just give me the heads up beforehand.

What an incompetent...You never get what you pay for with assassins these days. -
Birthed from the ebb and flow of cyberspace, "A joust first to three" arose with a time and place. What passion drove these hairy harbingers of havoc? Surely, there was nary a doubt, That it was a game that nobody gave a shit about. "Nevermind" thought the defier, This will spur our community to aspire, To heights unforeseen in fighting game history! Respite our stagnation and hold us closer, At the expense of the poser, To the enlightenment that resides in this mystery. Hark! The prophet's day has been foretold! Battlegrounds! In the month of blistery cold. The day has yet to come, Hailing the lament of an unborn son, But for whom? Anyway, good to see you here Cecil. Also, Nuclearcheese, Vierge and I are in all seriousness making progress on that art you keep asking for, so expect some good things in the near future.

I thought I was...WELL, good sir, I suppose we might have to surmise who shall take the title of the most sultry puddle of ice cream, and then act on it. Our dichotomy shall not go unresolved, for the ability of summoning phallus's is clearly superior only to one person. I think I did that right. Well, it's a good thing to increase one's vocabulary once in a while. Also, SSMugen, why does SBX and not any other game compel you to go? Also, I could pick you up. Just PM me your address and we'll work from there.
-
Welcome back, I got your message. I have finals until Thursday, and will return on Friday. Since I'll be back home, do you want to carpool up to Vernon? Also, we should bring Battle Fantasia. Thanks! I learned a bit about Noel as well, essentially realizing that she's some sort of Jam clone. I'll start dive-canceling next time. However, might I suggest we get in some GG:AC matches next time. You can learn advanced Sol strategies from the man with the sideburns. Also, much thanks to Nazgul for picking me up in my time of need. However, let's try to get there a bit earlier next time.
-
I would like to go, but I do not have a ride. Would anyone be so kind as to pick me up? I am in Storrs at the moment, so I'm a bit closer than Southbury. According to Mapquest, I am 15.82 miles/23 minutes away from Battlegrounds, if one were to obey the speed limits.
-
I'll second this. I personally ran meet-ups for what was the western CT crew for a summer, and the fact that these meet-ups were weekly gave most people a reason to just simply not come and "go next week." Anyway, I'll try to make it to this week's meet up. My biggest/only problem is getting a ride, so I'm going to start asking around. If not...I'll kindly ask for someone to come pick me up. I'm approximately 16 miles north of Vernon (23 minutes on Mapquest), 7 miles into the middle of nowhere from exit 68 on I-84.

Accept my friend request. In other news, I will be bring a 20 inch CRT/PS2 combo...and a PS3 with BB for those who can't IB in GG. I can't wait to see what the NJ vs. NE 5v5 has to offer. I'll be thoroughly practiced, so now I can determine where I am in the grand spectrum of competitive GG play. -
A good portion of my difficulty with this match-up lied in my unfamiliarity with where his combo potential/lockdown opportunities lied, and everything seems quite familiar with what I've seen. To sum up the posts above and add questions of my own: -Punish backdashing with Mappa, 5HS, 2D (Can 6P really punish a backdash? Did you mean 6H? You can option-select the throw, and if you catch them at the right height, you can 2P->BBU->CC V-ism Bullshit) -TK Ensengas -> IB/SB -Slayer's ground/anti-air game is his strongest asset in this matchup (What moves would a Johnny player use in the air? j.HS? Are Slayer's anti-air options universal answers or do they vary with what Johnny does?) -5K is staple -6K beats Johnny's 2HS (Johnny's use this on wakeup often? Any other particularly good options for them to utilize?) -6P beats OD (Which one?...This sounds like a bad idea, to be honest.) -BBU stuffs 5K and f.S (Staple Johnny pokes I presume?) -BDC is good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiKpVDsbY2M After watching this video, it seems: -Mappa against backdashes are good and lead to awesome black beat combo potential: (K Mappa->5K->K Mappa->5K->K Mappa->5P->j.S[2]->j.k->j.c (jump cancel)->j.S[1]->j.D) -j.HS is particularly good. -j.K is a good air to air -j.S is more prevalent in air combos (since he'll just drop and tech otherwise) -Coin stuffs FB pilebunker... -Johnny's use j.K as an air to ground move -Johnny likes to 2K/2P/6P? (The punch-type move...5P perhaps?) as okizeme. These lead to combos, and subsequently death. It might seem like I'm stating the obvious, but assumptions are a bad thing. Also, I want to keep from using my tension gauge as a BBU meter, so... Also, if any of my information is mistaken, feel free to call me out.

30th Street Station: 2955 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA Hotel: 4101 Island Ave, Philadelphia, PA Distance between the two: 6.74 miles (http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Philadelphia&1s=PA&1a=4101+Island+Ave&1z=19153-3226&1y=US&1l=39.89216&1g=-75.235039&1v=ADDRESS&2c=Philadelphia&2s=PA&2a=2955+Market+St&2z=19104-2828&2y=US&2l=39.95471&2g=-75.182444&2v=ADDRESS) Cab calling distance.

I couldn't believe it, but there's no thread regarding this match up. I seem to remember a bit of information a while ago which had silly things like punishing his coins with BBU on reaction, but I'm sure there are better strategies nowadays. Seeing as how the only Johnny players that I've played against are the ones that eliminate me from tournaments and then never surface again, does anyone with extensive Johnny experience care to share their tips/tricks?

You can count me in. About getting down to Philadelphia, there is a combo that I can vouch for where you first take Metro North to Grand Central and then take the Bolt Bus (http://www.boltbus.com) to Philadelphia that will only cost around $50~ish when all is said and done. However, it's about one mile from where the Bolt Bus and Grand Central are located, so you'll have to walk through NYC with all of your stuff. The alternative and more comfortable option is to use Amtrak, which travels directly to Philadelphia. The catch is that their services are $70 one way. This would be the preferred option, but I can only recommend it if you have the money to spare. -
I wish to post these flyers around UConn, since Vernon is a stone's throw away for anyone with a car. Should I just go to Battlegrounds and ask for some flyers to put up?

Good to hear. I've been attempting to practice I-No as of late, so we can help each other come up with parlor tricks to win us matches Also, Nazgul, how much is your room per night? -
The most obvious glitch that I thought of at the time was the Raiden/Elizabeth handcuff glitch. However, that was patched in the update so we no longer need to worry about that. Concerning the infinites, at first thought that they were not technically glitches and thus could be used in tournament play. But after taking another look at them, it does seem that these infinites are specifically console-only glitchy goodness. So I think it's in everyone's best interest to not allow them this time around. I am open to discussion on this matter. The tournament will be run on PS3. Revised tournament rule set: ----- The King of Fighters XII: -Double Elimination tournament. -Player sets will be best 2 out of 3 Matches. -Winners/Losers Finals will be best 3 out of 5 Matches. -Each match will be best 2 out of 3 Rounds. Each individual round will be 60 seconds. -Winner of 1st match must keep their team, but may change rotation of characters. -Loser may change their team or rotation if desired. -Infinites/Glitches (ex: Joe Higashi, Raiden/Elizabeth) are not allowed. The player who successfully performs an infinite/glitch will receive both mad props and a forfeiture of their current match.
-
I'll run XII. It's new, I own it, and it looks pretty. But I have a few questions regarding registration since this is a side-tournament. 1. Am I going to be solely responsible for handling entry fees, or will everyone register at the same time as the other games and I'll get a list of contestants from DM in order to make the bracket? 2.May I set pot distribution? I'm honestly not expecting many people to enter, so I want to give those who do some monetary incentive. I was thinking something along the lines of: 0-8 players: Winner take all (that's 24 bills yo.) 9-16 players: 80-20 (Winner gets 21.60 for 9 players, for 10+ he will receive 24+). 17-up: 70-20-10 (Must have 19+ players for the winner to receive more than the 80/20 split). These are my suggestions for the entry fee/schedule/rule set. If something seems misguided, feel free to comment. ------ Entry Fee: $3 dollars. Start Time: 6:30 pm The King of Fighters XII: -Double Elimination tournament. If you need any more information, feel free to ask.
-
Sounds good. Even if you decide not to run it, I must thank you for the consideration. It was the first thing I said . PS3 and PS2.
-
I'll run it after everyone's all salty from either: a) Eddie's unblockable setups. b) A groove. c) E. Honda's stored Oicho. d) Zoob's TF prowess. e) Being juggled to OTG combo'd into a wall FTL. FFFFFFFFFF) Mashed SRK-FADC-Ultra'd during a blockstring. So with that said, I would suggest 6:30pm or 7:00pm. What's DM's policy on bringing a TV of one's own into the venue? Also, must I inform them of my side-tournament beforehand, or do I just take matters into my own hands?

Wasn't that only released in Japan...? I guess this gives me a good excuse to finally get a flip top. However, I think UM98 was released in America and I'm fairly confident that 98 in general has a lot of support (I mean, there are three rooms on GGPO specifically dedicated to this game). In any case, where there is support, I will cater. Tangent: XII seems to be a hit or a miss with the SNK crowd due to the game's incomplete nature, what with missing moves encompassing most of the cast and grapplers being toned down from their previous 1 frame throw glory. I wouldn't say XII is a game without flaws...it's far from it. [opinion]But if I had to choose which next-gen fighter was the best in terms of game play, depth, and overall balance as of now...it would be XII (I can't offer my opinion on Tekken just yet, but the combo system is hilarious).[/opinion]

I will be coming, and I will bring a PS3 and a PS2 with me. I'm wondering why HDR is scheduled, but is not in the pricing information? Did you mean TF? Also, would it be ill-advised to run another side-tournament of my own? I wasn't able to put it out last time for casuals since I had to leave early, but I'd really like to see something for KoF XII. But if I have to wait until another time, that's perfectly fine. Reasoning (tl;dr warning): Since the online is beyond unacceptable and I can't seem to locate any tournaments for this game within the state (even the New England area...), the only chance for people to flesh out their competitive skills in this game would be at an event such as this. I really want to spur some support for this game, since I feel like some people merely took it at face value and abandoned it in favor for SFIV, BB, or really anything else due to the unfamiliarity most people have with the series, methinks. If I'm incorrect, please send me a formal letter of complaint to my personal secretary and I'll have her forward it to the proper authorities.
