  1. I'm going to be in the area this evening, so if you don't mind could I just drop by your house at a time convenient for you? Also, bump for Saturday casuals. PM me for the address if you're new and don't know where my apartment is. I have four TV's and a kitchen with counter space! Also, I want to comment on the topic of removing FRC's and Slashbacks as if they were just ripped out of AC (since we can't compare it to anything else). On removing FRC's, I feel like the biggest way that will impact the game is that they are taking out the once poignant option of making what would otherwise be a high risk move safe at the cost of meter. This is going to make what was once a thoughtful situation turn into a reactionary one, making the character with the best poke that leads to high damage, forcebreak, or overdrive that much more effective against particular characters with high recovery moves. Thus, high meter gain will not help them use their move set as effectively as it is is possible now, making counterpicking a legitimately viable option. On removing Slashbacks, I just simply don't like it. I can't utilize them effectively, but seeing them used to make what would have otherwise been a tried and true blockstring or easily telegraphed poke unsafe and potentially punishable is a grand thing to behold. Of course, you are left in recovery if you whiff, so it's yet again a high risk-low/med/high reward situation (If you slashback j.P, chances are you can't do anything, hence the low/med). The discretion of the player is put into play as he chooses the best situations in which to slashback, and this forces the opponent to not do the same thing over, and over, and over again. Basically, it seems that the way things are going, removing the high risk/high reward situations are what makes these games more accessible, giving everyone a guaranteed anti-air, blockstring, etc. I feel like Capcom might have had a brain and knew that this is what making a game more accessible meant, so they introduced the focus attack to add a greater amount of depth to the mix ups that would otherwise be relatively simple to execute. That was their solution, and I'm looking forward to what ArcSys does provided they do in fact take FRC's and Slashbacks out of the next game. tl;dr, I'm trying to be mature about my game going down the shitter
  2. http://www.finalround.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=213&start=0 Also, casuals at my apartment this Saturday. They will be the first and third Saturday of every month, unless stated otherwise.
  3. I have a series of questions: 1. Is it free play for both games (BB and GG) on Saturday and Sunday? 2. Are GG setups going to be on a CRT? 3. Can we use our own controllers (or at least be provided decent arcade sticks)?
  4. I'm going to make it a priority to make it out to this one, and I'll be bringing along the illustrious Danny_Schme, LPT, Dr. Onblast, and Furok. For our case, I believe 10/30 would be the best date to reschedule, and you should definitely include Melty Blood in the lineup. Also, Dr. Onblast and I are attending NYAF, but only on Saturday. Can we get some games in with someone (provided they have a dedicated game room with a setup)?
  5. The MindHiv3 specializes in homework parties. As for dinner, Dr. On-Blast definitely called ups beforehand.
  6. So...if anyone would like to play games, I would like to host some casuals at my apartment on Saturday. Come one come all, but PM me beforehand.
  7. The resolution could not have caused lag, for the PS3 outputs a signal in 480i, displays in 704x"480", and is the standard/native resolution of all CRT's (there's no rescaling introduced). The refresh rate of the TV could not have caused lag either, for a low refresh rate relative to the frames per second would only introduce more "flicker" as the frames being displayed are brought in at a faster rate than the TV can display (standard NTSC is 30FPS at 60Hz). However, this doesn't introduce lag since the TV is not locked in an eternal battle to display all the frames it is receiving, only the ones that are being sent to it at any given moment. Hence, the "flicker." Also, don't think that you're losing precious frames to react to overheads either, since "...for games running at 60fps, you only get half of each frame displayed. However, each two fields are usually so similar, you don't really notice the difference." (http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showthread.php?t=15255) Don't worry, I feel like I'm playing in molasses every time I play BB too.
  8. So, it is Ranbat week. Are we going to have a live stream?
  9. The obligatory shoutouts post: Fraga/Kona: Thanks for organizing the tournament and allowing us to have a fun weekend! Although Saturday's schedule was a bit wacky, Sunday ran much more smoothly. I'm glad you (Kona) liked the shirt! LPT: I should look at some match videos of Mech, shouldn't I? Danny: I should look at some match videos of Slayer, shouldn't I? Furok: Your initiation is not yet complete! Tales: Just take your time learning all that GG has to offer, and it'll be that much more rewarding. Remember, baby steps. Nuclear Cheese: I spent it all on an Oreo Frosty Vyers: Until I learn to beat you with I-No, I will hold your precious cardboard-waifu hostage. Nazgul: My closet will forever beckon you to its nurturing hallows. Noisetank: Stay classy. Cheesy Breakfast forever! L1f3: WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY Mike N: Good shit for murdering everyone in BB. JustinNine: May I have the last dance? Good shit in GG. Zero: Thanks for teaching me that I still don't know jack about MB. Why-Disciple: GG's in BB! Thanks for playing!
  10. Your singing voice caught us off guard as to how good it was. Noisetank can learn how to play guitar, Vierge can learn the drums, and I'll just sit on the side fiddling around. Noisetank, thanks for hosting! Your execution on stick is now leagues better than on pad, so just keep practicing and we'll turn you into something fierce. Thanks for the advice. Starting with Ril's meetup, I went through two weekends of being bodied by Millia
  11. I love you bro. Also, why aren't there videos of the foreigner that went to Furok's house? Too average?
  12. My attendance to SB is directly related to whether I get a job up at Storrs, which shouldn't be too difficult. Also, I would theoretically be down for games on Monday...which would also serve the double-purpose of discussing travel plans, and the triple-purpose of fun, laughter, and merriment.
  13. Erm...Do we have any more tips? I get trounced by Millia fairly consistently, and I have only learned that meeting her air-to-air is a terrible idea. She's also very difficult to anti-air since she is extremely mobile and just likes to jump around and net a safe approach via a blocked pin. Knockdowns are a terrible ordeal, since reversals and reversal-backdashing seem to be easily countered, and she thrives when I start to block (or try to block). I also like to get air-thrown and counter-hit by 6P when I use j.HS. It's basically me trying to catch her the entire round, and I feel like there's better things I could be using.
  14. HNK? Oh my, I know just the people to tell. Anyway, I am coming. Mindgam3 - CT MB:AA, GG:AC, 3S
  15. I'll be there all weekend, along with BlueNine. I probably won't be in the game room too much, unless they have setups where you can hook up your own controller or they supply an arcade stick that isn't too terrible. In that case, I would play GG and SSFIV, and BBCS if I feel like relearning Arakune.
  16. ...You suck at video games and life in general
  17. If I manage to get back onto the UConn campus next semester, you'll be welcome to stay at my dorm. My roommate will be compelled to agree.
  18. Alright, 2 vs. 2 it is. I didn't know about the massive damage/health increase...we might as well just run a free team tournament in that case, since a 2 vs. 2 completely defeats my original intent of vengeance and victory while playing the silliest of games. It'd be fun to run a Robo-Ky Mk. II tournament, but then everyone would have to own the game and actually play it to get a unique move set (thusly making it worthwhile).
  19. In a game such as GG, it's more so the player than the character that makes anyone good at the game. Since all of the characters are so versatile, anyone can make their main character play to their strengths. On a completely unrelated note, I have an idea for an event (it's not really a tournament) on Poverty Night. Myself, Cheese, and BlueNine have consistently been in the top 3 for GG at every ranbat up until this point. Since I just bought a multi-tap for the sole purpose of playing Isuka, why don't we give the chance for all those excluding the aforementioned to do a 3 vs. 1? The entry fee can be $1.50 (Reasoning: Total pot will be $6, if the 3 man team wins they will split the pot three ways to allot $2 for each member), and it will be winner take all. Thoughts? Also, there is a Ranbat this week! I know you all don't have anything better to do, especially Tales.
  20. I'd like to know more about the Dandy S, HS ender. I have difficulty getting it to connect since the S portion hits the enemy up so that the HS does not hit. Does it have its legitimate uses, or is PB the absolute knockdown combo-ender of the gods? On a side note, I was inspired by AtTheGates's silly Johnny combos and came up with a combo that I think effectively sums up Slayer's more demanding combo options. So, I think it might serve as a good measurement of a person's progress with regards to playing him effectively. It also does around 240, so it's not too shabby in terms of damage output. VS. May (Corner) 6P FRC -> 5HS -> j.S (hits twice) -> j.K -> land 5HS -> SJ j.HS -> j.D -> j.2K -> j.K -> 5HS -> IAD j.K -> j.K -> 5HS -> IAD j.D Also, I'd like to thank those who helped me with the Baiken combos. I won my money match!
  21. You'd do best to take his advice, he's one of the best players on the North Coast.
  22. I'll bring my PS3 with the purpose of having a setup for BB:CS. Although, I personally would not suggest running a side tournament this time around. Two of the games (GGAC and SSFIV) will be running both single and team tournaments, so the two hour time slots that these games will encompass most probably will be run at a feverish pace just to even fathom finishing them on time. However, if the hype is too great, I would suggest running it a little after Melty Blood begins (6:30?).
  23. I took the initiative and posted this on Melty Bread. http://www.meltybread.com/forums/tournaments-and-events/stryfe-presents-uprising!-saturday-july-17th-ssf4-ggac-mbaa/ I'm sorry, I was just so excited!
  24. The most important thing is to skim the character sub-forums for information. Since no one else aside from Baka and SaltNine (who don't come too often) are familiar with her, it's up to you to take their advice and knowledge to the next level. If you don't understand something, don't be afraid to ask! In my experience, everyone is willing to help one another out. The worst case scenario is that your advice/strategy/combo will be wrong, and then you'll end up learning something in the process. But then again, Flashmetroid is the moderator for the Jam subforum... Also, Danny, you're learning Zappa. Let me show you why this has been decided. Marvel as Chonari runs it back against Shonen (Round 3) and Woshige (Round 4) in the 2009 SBO finals, only to get beaten by N-Otoko: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tGUCPfGovw&feature=related
