  1. Greetings Dustloop_SRK! Let’s celebrate the remodeling with a really long post about anything but fighting games! I never really liked them anyway. Happy belated birthday Kyle! May this next year be filled with good luck and many epiphanies. I might be beating a dead horse at this point, but I think that my comment of "I like RPG's for the story" was projected onto the group (meaning, everyone but Mike) without much thought. I'm sure our exhaustion combined with our complete disability for critical thought at 3 a.m might have contributed to this as well. I want to revisit my statement and add a few corollaries. I cannot offer an opinion of wRPG's, for I have only really played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Mike, I can perfectly sympathize with your statements as to how RPG's can and are completely and utterly boring. The "window dressing" (as coined by Jian) is entirely overemphasized in certain games, frequent and lengthy cut-scenes take away the impact of MY actions on their world, and merely being able to grind my party members' base level to overcome a "difficult" boss/enemy leaves me with a sense of dissatisfaction. This is why I cannot stand your generic jRPG/MMO, since I feel like you can mindlessly pick the best equipment, mindlessly grind your way to victory, and then mindlessly let their story/lore glaze over your eyelids. It's not only the "dexterity component" that is missing, it's the overall "immersion" of yourself as an active part of the game. I would define "immersion" in an RPG as fully realizing the consequences of your decisions. This can be realized by not just specific button sequences and inputs, but also by your capacity to make accurate judgments. This most prominently includes the strategic manipulation of your opponent, whether it be by playing mindgam3$'s with them, or by exploiting their particular weaknesses. In the truly noteworthy RPG’s that most of us clamor to high acclaim, this aspect is present. In SMT games, you MUST know the capabilities of your opponent, or you will die (and if you think that they’re small-time, there’s a “rush” option that just uses your physical attack over and over to avoid just mashing buttons. Makes the battle really quick-like.). In Star Ocean, you MUST consider spacing yourself from the opponent, or you will die. In Super Mario RPG, you MUST master the timing-intensive features of your special moves, or you will die. Surely if you’ve read this far, you are now asking yourself “MindgamFree, what about the story? Why are you so Free Hawk?” It’s what brings this synergy of artistic direction and game-play together. Fundamentally, a “role-playing” game offers the opportunity to observe and appreciate a story, much like a novel/epic. However, you aren’t just reading about the exploits of Odysseus or Huckleberry Finn, you ARE them. Of course you fully understand what they are doing and why, because it is ultimately the consequences of your decisions that drive them down the path of success or failure. Maybe this success only has one ending, does that necessarily make the journey not as “immersive?” That is entirely up to you. Do the story elements entirely outweigh the game-play? Of course not, but not having solid gameplay is going to make your journey painfully frustrating/boring. The fact remains that the story is used to explain why you’re supposedly saving the world, traveling dimensions, or fucking bitches and getting paid. If you cannot appreciate this element, then RPG’s are just not for you. And that's perfectly okay!
  2. Yes, I fully intend to play her seriously. I think that I-No has a mixup and okizeme game similar to Slayer's, but is able to zone and establish a safe approach more effectively. I feel that this might help me in match-ups that require me to get on top of characters with really good reversals, such as Sol or Potemkin. She's also very fun to play, and I want to learn another character to the extent that I've learned Slayer (BBU combos into BBU...). I can already determine that it's helping my overall execution and technique immensely...minus the gatling combos. Those are easy mode.
  3. Pardon the interruption, but I have a question. My problem is that I can HCL 6FRC6 100% of the time, but only above a certain height (which I might describe as around the height of an opponent's head, if they were to play...say, Sol). When I try the jump-install/auto jump-install/5K TK-HCL combos, I cannot seem to get the air dash follow-up consistently. I'm just wondering, do you have to be above a certain height before the game allows you to air dash after the HCL, or ought I be able to air dash as low as I want provided I did the motions correctly? If I have to be at a certain height, what kind of technique can I use to help ensure that I'm not too low? Thanks in advance! Edit: I figured out my problem. It appears that I wasn't inputting the first 6 correctly. It most likely showed up as correct on the input display because I was holding the first six and then releasing it as the FRC came out, or something silly like that. Now it comes out as it should. I'd recommend to anyone that playing I-No will bolster your execution. I went back to Slayer for a bit, and was doing IAD j.k j.k's like it was some level 1 beginner garbage.
  4. You men claim to have witnessed the ultimatum of poverty, yet you have never beheld in your scrawny arms the listless aborted fetus that is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou4od-ehLhE&feature=related
  5. UMK3? You can't just play Japanese fighters all the time.
  6. Good games to all who went to Street Coast Throwdown 2. I hope they can learn from their mistakes and make the next one at least acceptable to those who don't come for SFIV. New Jersey: You guys are the shit. You keep reminding me that there ARE people out there who just want to play good games, and not settle for any less. You've all seriously leveled up since NEC, and I can't wait to play you guys again. Doomie, thanks for bringing that positive energy. Sogos, you are indeed a cool person (Also, thanks for teaching me the POWER of Slayer's mixup). 10Stars, play GG more often! BBQSauce, Tinshi, Stickbug... we NEED to play next time. New York: I've barely played you guys before this event, but you are all monsters at practically every game you play. A3, you helped me immensely with not only the Johnny matchup, but just playing the game. Mynus, you are my I-No idol. XAQshinor, you are just an overall great player and I will stop killing your fish. Alzarath, Zidane, the Faust player (I'm sorry!)...we NEED to play (more!). Next time, you're all free in EFZ. New England: You guys are too good. NuclearCheese, you are random, and this randomness helps knock down the egos of top players who don't realize that they can be beaten. Nazgul, thanks for helping me realize that I can ignore certain things and not get counter-hit. BlueNine, keep playing and come to BG more often! Max, I hope you're enjoying your birthday present, since I have back pain from sleeping on the floor. Genstov, stop monkeying around and keep improving. Vyers, I'll take back my rightful 6 dollars! Kona, you're going to enter Guilty next time. Other Thanks: Saaro: I can't thank you enough for excusing my scrubbery. I play a Bridget on a regular basis, and you had me eating moves to the point of frustration. You also put Vyers in the losers bracket, that's not what I'd call easy. Good shit, and keep playing. Lord Knight: You can use my stick anytime.
  7. Aha, this is good. Vyers and I were worried about the projected nine (and possibly more) people that were going to stay in one room on Friday night, but this changes things for the better. Only six people are staying Friday/Saturday in Vyers's room, and from there the head count can be divided up (with your consent, of course) if it gets too out of hand. I don't foresee that happening...but it's mad hype, yo.
  8. So, does this imply that Zorin and everyone he's bringing to ECT are going to arrive early Saturday morning and only stay for one night?
  9. Just throwing it out there, but you ought to make a note that Gold/Shadow/EX characters are banned for tournament use in Guilty Gear in the Tournament Rules/Scheduling section. Also, I'm not quite up to date with Tekken 6, but I'm fairly sure that Azazel and Nancy are banned in that game. Everything else looks impeccable, you're doing an excellent job!
  10. GG's to all on Friday. I do apologize for being a bit of a negative Nancy towards the end. Between exhaustion, Street Fighter, and Butters claiming that Chrono Trigger had no story, I was a bit irritable. When people stop complaining that I play Slayer..."B"roken tier 4 lyfe nukka. No problem, I'm always glad to help out new players. I just hope you were able to take away something, since I kind of used the shotgun method and threw a bunch of information at you without really connecting it all. You'll understand as soon as you start actively playing GG in no time.
  11. Online play will violate your perception of a fighting game's mechanics. Unsafe moves become safe, movement becomes a jagged affair, and bears will maul you without any remorse. Anyway, I will be there tonight. In the meanwhile, in case you haven't seen it yet, the pre-SBO GG tier list came out. S: ED, TE A: MI B: MA, PO, JA, SL C: SO, KY, CH, FA, BA, AX, AN, VE, DI, IN, ZA, RO, AB, OS D: JO, BR Considering this was the tier-list circa 2008: S:Eddie, Testament A: Potemkin, Baiken, Jam, Slayer B: May, Axl, Venom C: Sol, Ky, Millia, Faust, Anji, Dizzy, Zappa, Robo-Ky, ABA, Order-Sol D: Chipp, Johnny, I-No, Buri Discuss.
  12. Yes. I approve of this idea. Maybe I could borrow Fraga's capture card so we can record these matches...?
  13. Please enter me as: Mindgam3 - CT GG:AC and MB:AA Vyers, we still have yet to do our MM, of which I want to raise the stakes to a whopping $5. Also, if we get enough people, we ought to go through with the NJ vs. NE 5v5 that failed spectacularly at NEC.
  14. That is excellent news, good work! I'll help provide the lessons/beatings. I don't know much with Johnny, but I'll see what I can find out by the end of the week. What's up with Stryfe nowadays? I could teach her a thing or two with I-No, like how to whiff combos and be predictable. I'll also see if Rashaad will be able to go, since he expressed interest in getting back into GG last week. I feel like Super is going to throw another wrench into getting people to learn GG, though
  15. So, we are upon the last week of the month, and this means that we are looking at the third (?) BG RanBat! I think we ought to include BB:CS in the lineup this time around, seeing how much support it seems to have garnered last week. We should move away from the cancer that is BB:CT and level-up with the most current version (so that everyone will be a beast by the time the console port drops!). So, the games for this week are as follows...? SSFIV BB:CS GG:AC MB:AA Also, Blue9 should show up so I can punch his dolphins in the face. Also, Fraga, how's the status on the capture card?
  16. So, I have an idea for a Slayer-related shirt design. However, I just wanted to make sure that people were interested in the design before committing to buying Adobe Illustrator from the internet (I know a site where I can get a heavy discount), so I can make some kind of workable vector product. The sprites of Slayer that are shown would ideally be one solid color, with his red cape/crosses/tie highlighted in order to give a little more information as to where his arms are. Maybe some bats here and there might be in order as well. Please feel free to give criticism concerning the layout/presentation/fonts/etc, since it's a work in progress. http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp166/Mindgam3/SlayerShirtIdeacopy.jpg
  17. My money's on T. Hawk. You heard it here first, folks. Also, agp, what time is early?
  18. I am most interested in going, but I am not in need of a ride, for I am driving myself. Accompanying me will Vierge, Paul, and Danny (although he doesn't know this yet). More importantly, we are all in need of a room...
  19. If you could, that would be excellent. I know he's going, which must mean that he has a room arrangement of some sort. I think I have him in my contacts, but I know far too many Paul's to risk calling the one Paul on my list. I should write their alias as their last name if they hail from the internet. Isn't that right, DANNY DANNY?
  20. Wow, it couldn't have been a more excellent week for me not to show up...[/joking] You know it's not the same without my broken blob. In actuality, I'll be doing a GG training montage in Stratford in order to prepare for the ranbat the week following. However, I wish to give Furok his finished and fully-functional stick, since Robo is a no-no on pad. Is anyone going to be there particularly early so I can hand it off to them and leave with good confidence that he'll receive it?
  21. So who's going to East Coast Throwdown 2 (http://www.dustloop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8221)? I really want to go, but I don't have the funds to reserve a room all by my lonesome.
  22. I finally got a chance to experiment with this combo, and it is quite consistent if you anti-air Baiken at the right height to connect the initial j.k -> j.k. The damage is definitely more than my combo suggested above as well (187 if started from 5P, 210 if started from 2S), since j.P seems to prorate, despite it not being mentioned in the frame data. However, the cool thing about my combo is that no matter the height, the initial j.P -> j.K will connect (unlike what I wrote before), and only after that do you need to judge whether to do another j.P -> j.K string or just another j.K before the JC. After that, you do the same combo and have essentially the same options. Basically, your suggested combo is better, but will whiff against a Baiken who is anti-aired low to the ground. So, it has a use...? You can also definitely do 5HS rebounces off of both of these combos, but you can only really follow it up with the sj.HS or AD j.D -> j.2k business, since the IAD j.k->j.k is seemingly impractical due to her small hit box. To summarize: vs. Baiken (Consistent Air Combos) 5P/2S -> j.K -> j.K -> j.2K -> JC j.K -> j.D -> j.2K -> j.K -> 5P -> j.K -> j.2K -> j.D (187/210); Recommended 5P/2S -> j.P -> j.K -> (j.P if low) -> j.K -> JC j.K -> j.D -> j.2k -> 5P -> j.K -> j.2K -> j.D (185/197); For Low AA's
  23. To make diagonals work by default in BB:CS, DO NOT SELECT FOUR-WAY JOYSTICK when running typex_config.exe. Maybe BlueNine has just been selecting four way joystick this entire time? Maybe now that he knows, he's holding down-back in preparation as we speak!
  24. You live right near NuclearCheese, NE's premier flowchart Sol. I take it that this is the meet-up that's been posted on SRK for a while? I'm guessing he's not going to go to East Coast Throwdown 2 (http://www.dustloop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8221)? If not, I would be highly interested in tagging along. Surely he needs practice against Slayer, they're a dime a dozen! Just to clarify, are you going by train or by car?
