Yuno Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I'm sure everyone who plays fighting games thinks to their self at some point, "I'm good at this game, could i take it to the next level?" but they don't know where to start, so of course they head off to the internet to search for tips. Can we make this thread about basic info that would be given to a new GG XRD player or even a fighting game player in general?
Ronove Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Play against stronger opponents, learn how to defeat them.
Dreiko Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Devote tons of consecutive hours on a daily basis to practicing and playing.
felirx Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Play weaker opponents to hone your combos and abare. There's a limit on the benefit you can get from here. Play similar level opponents to learn basic matchup and your offense. Play stronger opponents to learn your defense. If you play someone who is much, much stronger than yourself as a beginner, you won't really learn anything because you will be bodied in one combo to setplay to death and you won't understand why you're dying. You need a basic understanding of how the opponents character works first.
StrikeBlade Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 http://www.dustloop.com/forums/index.php?/topic/10275-help-me-not-suck-at-guilty-gear-xrd/ I'm just going to link this other thread I made since it asks the same-ish question.
Krackatoa Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 If you play someone who is much, much stronger than yourself as a beginner, you won't really learn anything because you will be bodied in one combo to setplay to death and you won't understand why you're dying. You need a basic understanding of how the opponents character works first. If you have the basic concepts down, this isn't necessarily the case, you may just not enjoy getting beat down unless you're very patient. This is how I learned to play, and having only amazing players to play against immediately stops any bad habits from forming, or makes holes in your gameplay feel VERY obvious.
Grimsley-San Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Don't be like Filipino Champ Sanford Kelly when you lose.
Grimsley-San Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 What did F Champ the God do? I changed it >w>
Syklone Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 You mean don't slam your stick on the ground when the salty abyss pulls you down to it's infinitely sodium infused darkness? Aka the salt mines.

It's certainly a viable way to learn and get good if the better opponent is willing and patient to play long sets with you. Local preferred so he can give you tips on things like what this pressure string loses to etc. You have to understand at least some of what your character can do, and of course you need to understand the concepts of the game.
LifeIsGood4 Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 any characters good or bad for beginners ? hows slayer ? hes appealing to me
Yuno Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 any characters good or bad for beginners ? hows slayer ? hes appealing to me With my time with the game i have found him to be pretty good actually, i don't play him all that much, mostly May, but he seems to be a bit tricky for some new players, If you are new to the game i would stick with someone like Sol or Ky, being the main characters they are probably the easiest to pick up and learn combo's and the basics with then play Slayer, honestly though, just play what you like, its all about having fun right?
SgtFunShinebear Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I made a video a couple days ago talking about Sin and pointing newcomers in the direction I think's appropriate for the training room: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPOIqKjdHMs
Yakifufu Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 You don't learn much from fighting better people than you because half the time they just stun you as quickly as possible and then instant kill you to be done with you. It's really frustrating.
Yakifufu Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Fairly fast. I play Axl and I get rushed down no matter how hard I try. Every single person lately goes for the instant kill after I get stunned and I'm never fast enough at mashing or moving the stick to get out of it, especially when my health is flashing.
Xtra_Zero Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 You're making tons of mistakes before that then. Axl gets rushed down because you need to rush him to kill him, and Axl has lots of options to keep the opponent out, so you need to take opportunities when you get them.
HardSlash Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Play OFFLINE. Get long sets with people that are better than you. Don't be afraid to get defensive, the options are there for a reason. Get a feel for baiting bursts.
BlackJustin13 Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Also, save replays of your matches(Xrd now allows you to save replays of offline matches too :D ) You may notice obvious mistakes/openings while watching replays that you can miss in the heat of battle.
Kumlekar Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 You're making tons of mistakes before that then. Axl gets rushed down because you need to rush him to kill him, and Axl has lots of options to keep the opponent out, so you need to take opportunities when you get them. This is true, but also axl gets penalized pretty hard by lag online. There's many times where I input 6P or 2S to stop an airdash, only to have the move come out after the opponent has moved past the zone where it would be useful. 2S online in particular gets me hit.
