MechaBaphomet Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Play a lot, and ask questions.Playing against the CPU won't really help you out at all. CPU's don't behave the same as real people do. Playing real people online (or offline) will help you understand the game much better and faster. You won't learn how to play neutral against a bot. Watching high level matches of people who play your character to see what they're doing is also very helpful. There is tons of videos and resources on how to get into FG's on this site and on YouTube. If you're pretty much just starting out, you're in the right place.
xWonderGx Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Thanks man I appreciate the response. I practice my combos in training mode( I play sin btw) and I get them down pretty well, but when I get in a real match I can't seem to do my combos. Is the cpu valuable for practicing execution? I have trouble with getting pressured in the corner and pressure in general. I have been using FD but I don't know how to get out of the corner once I get locked down.
Wutai_Shinobi Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Mecha is right about cpu versus fighting real people. I like to think of the cup as a way of practicing combos while having to move around, and think about what the opponent will do. The AI is basically a bad player with occasional psychic abilities, so you definitely can't use it to learn much of anything.Win or lose, if you're hit confirming properly against the cpu, then you know you'll be able to do it in a real match. The hard part then is learning the neutral, so you can land what you practiced in the first place. The ranges and attacks a person will choose is going to be a lot better than the computer.Corner pressure can be really strong. There're usually gaps where you might jump or poke out, but choosing those are a gamble as well. FD can open up those moments, but knowing what to do with them requires character specific knowledge. Whoever gives you a hard time in the corner, start learning what their pressure entails and ways to handle it. Once you know, you'll still have practice it in a real match. Just stay patient, and focus until you start to the moments of opportunity. You'll lose a lot, even when you first start recognizing opportunity, but that's the nature of fighters. Keep grinding, and your personal skill will improve.
MechaBaphomet Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Yeah the CPU is OK for practicing some combo you learned on a moving target. In the end, it all comes with experience. The more you play, the more you will get used to seeing/being in all these situations.
xWonderGx Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Thanks for the replies guys. Could one of you add me on skype so we can talk more in-depth, and so I can ask some more questions. Skype ID: TwentyKnives
Wutai_Shinobi Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Sorry I haven't been on in a while. Combination of being sick, and other health related responsibilities. Keep on the look out for a Sunday room though. I also wanted to share this video, which is an extension on knowing the ranges of your normals. Knowing the ranges are a major part of fundamentals in any fighting game, and knowing how expand that into opportunities is the next step. http://youtu.be/hY-cMStAyuE
Wutai_Shinobi Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I haven't been on the forum in a while, but definitely need to share this article I saw on Twitter. Many of us, myself included, need to work on our blockstring tech, not just our combos. http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1snrjff
ShadowBagel Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 I am new to the Guilty Gear universe starting with Xrd. I learned a bit about Millia, but I sort of require busy characters to keep me interested. I typically lean towards really high execution character, like Litchi in bb and c.viper in street fighter. I really want to learn Zato, and I know it comes down to a lot of muscle memory with him. There also is not a huge archive of resources with information on him because he is pretty free-form. Is he still the kind of character that can just be learned over time by playing against live people? Part of my problem is that I don't currently have anybody to play with, online or off. He's an intimidating character, and that is only magnified by lack of opportunities to play against people and chat about stuff.
Whizard Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I'm in the UK but generally have decent connection to people in the East Coast of the US. I would love to join and have help learning the game faster as right now I'm terrible. I have 0 people to play with and hate playing against the CPU. I don't really learn anything from playing the computer. I'm on random days of the week at random times every week but as you's are in America and I am in the UK anyway the times will vary. Either way if anyone wants to play/can help then my PSN iD is: WizardSlayerx

I only do Axl, but at least that would give you someone to practice against.
Wutai_Shinobi Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 Sorry, I haven't been on DL very frequently, but you can join the ECDojo community in you're on PS4 as well. Can always look for me online too, ChfMojoRising. ^_^
