I've been practicing this for weeks, I have the IAD towards the right fine at least 1/2 the time, plus I'm left-handed. I'm using the grip number 2 from this link. http://www.eventhubs.com/guides/2009/jul/08/tips-switching-pad-joystick/

I'm wondering if it's a sensitivity issue of the stick. The input does indeed read 47 but I just end up doing a normal jump. I'm wondering if you guys have any techniques or tricks when doing it. So far I have a better chance at pulling it off if I rest just my thumb on the ball (other fingers not resting on anything) for the 47 if not I do 477 (and even then it seldom works).

you're doing the wrong input.

it's 956/754, so you have to be hitting neutral between 7 and 4.

If that was an issue I wouldn't be able to do it towards the right. Yes I do set it to neutral before doing 4/6. I've also tried different grips and they don't seem to help that much. Also, is there a difference if I IAD with 8 instead of 9? Because I don't see the difference. If I input 956 with my stick (and pull off the IAD successfully), the input on screen reads it as 986 most of the time...

You need to get a feel for the buffer/input system. As you already know, 96 will never be an IAD because the game will read the first '9' as a forward jump, and then the following '6' is read in as extraneous input as far as IADing is concerned. When you input 9<filler>6 fast enough, within the allotted buffer time for an IAD, the game reads your inputs as:

'9': When you look at the nitty gritty, 9 is a combination of 8 and 6 so you automatically get the jump and the forward motion in one input.

<filler>: The filler has to be some joystick input, probably 5 but it can be 8 if you want. Or even 7 and 4. As long as it's not 6, because then the game will think you're rolling the stick from 9 to 6 which is not the proper motion for a dash.

'6': You already got the jump and the forward motion from the '9' you inputted previously, and then added filler to let the game know you're not rolling. By inputting another 6 the game thinks you did a 66 in midair, and you get your IAD.

If you don't do the whole thing fast enough, the game will assume that you're starting a new input command somewhere along the line and it will drop the initial '9' command that it was storing in its buffer.

If this is the source of your problem, then your only fix is to do 9566 until you can do the whole thing fast enough to drop the final 6. If it's not a timing issue but a filler issue, you can try 946 to ensure that you get your filler input in (this way, you are essentially doing 9456.)

Hopefully that wasn't too much information you already knew.

Off topic here, but you really shouldn't just copy grips that you read about online. Using a "popular" grip won't make you better. What will make you better is using whatever the hell feels comfortable to you. Many people just let their hands rest near the stick and let them flow into whatever position is comfortable for the movement they need at the time. If that doesn't appeal to you, just put your hand on the stick in whatever way feels natural, don't try and conform to a grip.

Sektr, you are both right and wrong. You see, when I switched from a PS3 pad/PSP to stick, I just held the stick with my thumb and two fingers. Sure it was comfortable, but didn't offer the sort of tight control I believe is the wineglass grip's selling point. After reading that very post and watching a few gripping videos I find myself playing various arcade games on MAME using the monkey grip on bat-top sticks or the wineglass on both bat-tops and ball-tops when playing fighters. It may sound surprising to you, but for a lot of us new to sticks it might have never crossed our mind that you can grip it this or that useful way. Now, if someone tries out the grips in one of the multitude of help threads and then alters it in some way, that's fine. The point is that one has to open up their mind and let go of any presumptions. For me puting your hand under the ball-top sounded so funny, that I only tried it for fun... and was amazed :P

Hey it seems I can't input the 956IAD during a combo... Like for example for arakune if I input 5D9564B won't work. I would actually have to do 5D9664B instead. It's not much of a problem since the 5D's animation is long but I was just wondering if anyone can explain?

Arakune's IAD after 5D is really really difficult. I would just do combo's other than that until you get better, and then go back to those combos.

Jump Cancels were hard for me when I started playing stick too. Just keep practicing and you'll get it eventually.

The video helped me out a lot, wasn't really sure how to hold it with good control over the joystick. I just need to practice execution now..Time to play in training mode all day. ;-;

SSF4 TE stick or HRAP3 Pro SA?? Im thinking bout ordering an another one...

Do what is in your budget I'd say. If you already own one of the two, get the other one and try it out for a change.

Also, depending if you want to customize your TE S or your HRAP3SA, the TE S is a bit easier to customize because you can access almost everything via un-screwing the top screws, unlike the HRAP3SA, you have to unscrew from the bottom to get to the top.

But if money is not an object, get a HRAP VLX. That shite is beast!

Just got a stick, its awesome how easy it becomes to do 236 or 214 or even 632146 but I need more practice to get more than the easyest combos.

whats the difference between sanswa and hori or any other name brand arcade sticks? I see one for $50 dollar its the SF one with the white plate. Is it worth it?

Yeah, I know what you mean. Even 360s are a joke -- I had a blast testing a million ways to pull out Hakumen's Astral in practice mode -- but the fact that not pressing a direction on pad means going back to 5 on the stick takes a bit to get used to :P

Are you talking about the MadCatz Fight Stick Standard Edition (SE for short), correct? The SE is cheap because it uses knock-off Sanwa parts. Same goes with the Hori stick that you are looking at for the same price.

The SE parts work for a good while, but crap out after a lot of usage. Unlike the knock-offs, real arcade parts, like Sanwa or Seimistsu buttons and joysticks, last for a very, very long time.

You can buy a SE and then mod it to make it Japanese Arcade Standard like the Madcatz Fight Stick Tournament Edition (TE) or the Hori Real Arcade Pro (HRAP), but by then it'll cost the same amount to buy a TE.

The MadCatz Website usually has a monthly sale on their sticks. Don't know when the next one is though. You can also check on Amazon.com or go to Ebay.com to find a used one. You can also check out the Trading Outlet Thread on shoryuken.com. People sell a lot of stuff there, and you can also post a thread in the Trading Outlet if you meet the criteria.
