ejdge Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 I'm adjusting to GG's combo system and I'm wondering if it's better to double tap (or even triple) or time links for combos? Or is it all based on preference? Thanks.
rtl42 Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 post in the general questions sticky, i don't think this warrants its own thread.
Koozebanian Fazoob Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 RTL you should just move these kinds of threads to the Gameplay forum with a redirect. It's an OKAY thread but it should just be in the other forum. To answer the question, it's best to just learn the timing in the long run really.
Hellmonkey Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 When I was in Japan, almost every single Slayer player double tapped for almost everything they pressed. For other characters, you can get by with just learning timing, but especially for Slayer, if you can play normally while doubletapping you should do it.
koogy Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 i time all links, but probably would be better off double tapping.
Koozebanian Fazoob Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Dunno why you'd double tap unless the idea is to just get something to come out, regardless if it actually combos or not. You can't double tap that fast anyway, and any link that's hard enough to worry about will not have a big enough gap for double tapping to be that useful.
Mike Z Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 If you double tap with 2 fingers hitting the same button, it's pretty fast. Many good 3s players doubletap all the time - Pyro, for example, does it for every button even for whiffs to build meter. It's no substitute for learning your links, but it helps in case you mess up or the controls are bad. Plus that way you can do everything slightly early, guaranteeing the doubletap has you covered. Hellmonkey Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Dunno why you'd double tap unless the idea is to just get something to come out, regardless if it actually combos or not. You can't double tap that fast anyway, and any link that's hard enough to worry about will not have a big enough gap for double tapping to be that useful. You can double tap extremely fast with enough practice, different players do it slightly differently but almost everyone who does it uses either their index and middle or middle and ring fingers and either slides their first finger off right as they are pressing with their other finger, or presses it very lightly with the first before pressing with the second finger. I actually first learned double tapping when the Bridget yo-yo bug was discovered, since you have to let go and press it again within a few frames. I think that on American buttons it would be a LOT harder than on Japanese buttons due to it being harder to press, but I'm sure it is still both possible and used even on those. Like Mike mentioned, it's common in other fighting games as well. Knowing your links without having to double tap is important, but knowing them with the doubletap for even more accuracy can only help.
Stag.S Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 I normally double tap because I haven't put in the effort to actually learn the timings of my combos (probably why I get my ass kicked so much) but I think it'd be better if you time it rather then double or triple tapping. I seem to have a problem where the wrong move or an unnecessary move comes out or I don't have enough time to throw out an input, like the bubble in the bubble loop for Dizzy. Oh and for double tap I'm assuming it means mashing the button with the same finger for your combo, not the tapping with two different fingers to do things like Bridget's Yo-Yo bug.
AleXander Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 i play slayer and always time his links. Double tapping is for people with bad timing.
RageBot Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 I time my links because I think that way the normals are used with a better timing overall than with double-tap. If for example I play Slayer (I do) and do 2k -> 2s -> 2d if I double-tap I might press the S both too early and too late and miss the link.
Mulligan Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Well that wouldn't really come into account if you actually practiced double tapping. I pretty much double tap everything that doesn't cancel and I've never had a problem doing any link without it. It all just comes down to preference.
