Let's see... the time I went, it was about $300 for a round trip plane ride...

300$ round trip from Canada to Vegas, sorry but never happening during Evo season for us...

a really quick look at tickets right now would be 486.18$ CAD for thursday to monday 1 stop, direct flight being 525$, and that's if i buy it 6 months in advance...

it would be cool to be on the same plane too if people could afford buying tickets way in advance

we'll need to plan asap to get good price anyway so let's do this next meetup~

I'm all for getting everything settled as early as possible. Next meetup as in next Thursday?

Do we know the days that it would take place (like the date)

For Evo? It's July 11-13

Flights within America are much cheaper. My straight flight to Vegas was about 500$ food spendings 100$ (minimum) Taxi was cheap but was right next to the Aeroport, 200$ for hotel with guarenteed floor sleeping. Tournament fees. So yeah if you want a somewhat boring and limited EVO trip its near 1k if you want to do more, 1.5k+

I'm looking up hotel fares right now, and it says that it would be 170 something per person (if we were to get 3 rooms for 6 people) for the 4 nights that we would be there. The rooms are decent and actually in the LVH Hotel

The Rivera is within walking distance.

Best western is kind of within walking distance

still waiting

lol sorry, was busy.

As everyone knows, Foonzo has been getting more and more popular. Phoun and Jin are actively promoting the place more than they've ever done before and we're trying to have special events on most days of the week. Basically we want to give people a reason to come often, especially on the more quiet days. Right now on Thursdays there's gonna be the bi-weekly retrogaming competitions, we're trying out LoL streaming on Sundays, and Tuesdays are reopening as board game nights. As more people fill the place up, we need more room, more couches, more tables to accommodate everyone.

This of course affects our usual meetup days. But the thing you must understand is that being able to stay from 5pm to 12am and play games ALL NIGHT is a PRIVILEGE for us. Same goes for staying after closing hours. As a waiter myself, there is no way I would allow a group of people who spend the equivalent of 2$ per hour stay all night. You've all seen me kick those kind of people out with great pleasure. They're a waste of space.

Now, the deal we've had with Foonzo for the past 2 years or so has been that as long as everyone in blazblue consumes around 10$ per night, they can play as much as they want. That deal stands TODAY, and most people have been respecting it, with a few exceptions that I don't really feel like naming here. The reason blazblue gets this special treatment is because Foonzo never forgot the support we've been giving them right from the start. Believe me when I say that no one else is allowed to get away with this. For example the Smash community is banned from Foonzo because they acted like children who demanded stuff without giving anything in return. But blazblue has always been respectful and supportive of the place, so they are VIPs.

However Foonzo has grown. It is not a lounge anymore, it is not a coffee shop, it is not a bubble tea place... It's a bar with video games on the side. As a business, this is what's been working the best so far, in terms of attracting a lot of new, potentially regular customers who will spend more (and before any of you want to cry "sellout"... This is Phoun and Jin's life work, and they sure as hell deserve to be able to make a living off it). As waiters, we also have sales quotas to meet now. If we don't, there are penalties. If I don't sell well, I might even lose my job!

So yeah, we do have less room to play. But we have no choice but to adapt to the changing circumstances. We can't forget how lucky we are to have a place like this in the middle of downtown and the fact that we have a special relationship with it. The PS3's and sticks are still there. Foonzo paid for the BBCP copies. The broken monitor has been replaced. We're allowed to rent the place for a whole day to do tournaments like UMAD. We just have to go with the flow and appreciate what we have. And if you don't... Well, can't please everyone. Personally whenever I work, I try to accommodate you guys as much as I reasonably can (as do Monika and Henri), but don't expect this kind of treatment from the new waitresses... They don't know who you are, or why you should be allowed to get away with stuff. They just want to make as much money as they can, meet their quotas, and you cannot blame them for that.

That's pretty much all I have to say on the subject. Hope I didn't sound rude or confrontational because that's not what I want to achieve with this post. If you wanna discuss it more, feel free to talk to me at Foonzo or just post here!

I appreciate Foonzo. They have to do what they have to do to survive.

Making a mental note: Buy more things from Kirbster ^,^

Lol, I think that's the opposite message. Sounds to me like Foonzo is happy to have had us but our expansion and their expansion are incompatible. I don't know where else we would go though. Maybe once I have my own place I'll start hosting again. I own lots of tvs and systems

Personal experience : last time I went to Foonzo I ended up ordering two meals from different waitresses. I couldn't really tell the second one "sorry, I already ate". Plus the menu has shifted away from the foods I liked to order (bulgogi, bubble tea, cake) so I'm less inclined to order more. It's like kirbster said : it's a bar now, not a lounge

Thanks for the write-up Kirby. It's about what I expected, except we get you guy's point of view. Much appreciated. :)

But I'm also getting a feeling of déjà-vu. Saying as much only reiterates what we already know: space is shrinking and becoming more valuable. I've been coming more on Wednesdays and Sundays since getting a bit traumatized from that ultra-packed Thursday meet.

So what I'm getting at is... what happens to the future of MTLBB? Foonzo is a super-cool place I think we all appreciate and would like to keep. But let's say even Tuesdays end up as packed as the busiest Thursday... what do we do then?

Bit of a rhetorical question, but it needs to be asked. It doesn't diminish our appreciation of the place one bit, though.

stuff

If you all go read my posts from last week, this just confirms pretty much everything I've already said. We WILL eventually get pushed out, simply by the fact that the place had a change of orientation and doesn't really cater to the video game crowd anymore and that we are not bringing in enough money. When I said that we need to START looking for another place, it was in prevision of this. And when I said I was surprised they replaced the defective monitor, I still am. I don't know, in that mindset, why you would invest money for a crowd that essentially are making you lose money.

I'm not angry at foonzo or their staff, we're just a victim of their success, which we helped them build. I'm sure they feel somewhat indebted towards us since who knows if they would still be in business if we hadn't been a concrete steady income for almost 3 years, which leads to the special treatment we have now. I think it's just time to look for ways to cut our ties before it gets to a point where they just can't justify any reason to let us do what we do anymore.

I started this post yesterday and finished it today, and I feel that it's kind of random amidst all this EVO talk lol.

On that topic, I am 100% down to go! Never went yet, and this time I really want to organize it in advance since I tend to procrastinate with these things. Want to save as much money as possible as I plan on moving during the summer.

We're at a point where it's reliable to expect to see faces from the community on wednesday, thursday, sunday and heck maybe even tuesday again. Sure, there might not be an ease to accommodate larger meetup days like we used to. But if we can reliably trade this convenience for a place we are welcomed with open arms 4 days out of 7, I'll take it.

I'm also not under the impression we will get thrown out or be replaced by what brings money. I asked Phoun if we could run UMAD, he replied "Sounds good, just ask Jin". I asked Jin if we could just run it that date, nothing more, nothing less. Just a confirmation on the date and he offered me help, asked me what I needed, said he'd refer us to his girlfriend who's in a good position to help with promotion. Sure, UMAD brings in good revenue to foonzo. But they're still ok 5 minutes after I asked to say to other customers "DJ and chiptune saturdays are cancelled for an FG tournament"

All that for weekly customers for who it is okay and approved to spend less than other customers. Sure, we get pushed in a corner. But if we wanted Foonzo to be more our way, it'd be in our incentive to bring in a considerable amount of revenue more so than their events have been bringing lately. That being said, I wouldn't expect us to be committed to doing so or even accomplishing in the first place. Far more interested in playing the games. That doesn't bring money, and they're still not kicking us out. But place wouldn't live otherwise, nor would I expect any other place to do such without a trade-off.

That one other place we should be thinking about would be meeting at other people's place. That would be the most reliable method. Let's just get an apartment together and turn this in MTLBB. Meanwhile, let's just split our numbers on more days because trading off a huge meetup day for schedule convenience and having plenty of setups is worth it for now and potentially a long ass time.

let's just split our numbers on more days

I think this is the best way to erode a community. If we were to get something running like MTLSF had with the HQ(which was, imo, a much better place to play games), we could have our weekly meetups over there with all the space and setups necessary for the size of our community and do the bigger events at foonzo, as long as they're interested in having us. If you've got 6+ setups running with everyone playing at once, it lets a community become much stronger a lot faster. It would probably be cheaper per month than what our community pays as a whole at foonzo.

Posted

How does it erode? I think it's much better than having 16 people around 2 stations standing up and apologizing to all the other customers that are trying to get through to get to the bathroom. As long as numbers stay good, we all meet up once a month for a tournament, and people vary the meetups they go to, I don't see how this can become a problem. Money isn't the only issue with a HQ, I don't think it's what we want atm, and I can't see anyone filling the role that Pierre had.

Posted

Because a community thrives on numbers. This is why online communities never work, there is no sense of ownership. If people have to split days some parts of the community will never see each other, and I can't see that being a good thing.

Posted

I also have to disagree about erosion. So long as people are consistent about coming, we'll have a community. It's being consistent that got us the numbers we have today, otherwise we never would have grown beyond the couple guys we used to be just 4-5 years ago (has it really been that long already? Damn). These days, pretty much any day you go you can expect at least a couple guys, and if we split, then it should be more evenly distributed. I'm sure we'll be fine.

Anyway, I like Foonzo because it offers more than just games. NCBA and the HQ died out for being an unsustainable model (not to mention being sketchy as fuck). They'd have to offer something Foonzo doesn't for me to make the switch. Besides, we aren't yet to the point where going to Foonzo isn't feasible. There's still plenty of space on the off-days as it's really just Thursdays that are jam-packed as it is.

My 2c.
