pochp Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Weird monthly lol, still, GGs. How did you guys find the round robin thing? Felt like trying it since we weren't that many. Thanks to our bracket runners RuroniLonewolf and Kazuhiro, and Brice/Greenix for bringing a setup. BB Round robin results (From what I remember... best of 1, no bracket after... I think we were 9) 1. Heartless (8-0) 2. Brice (7-1) 3. Sam (6-2) then I dunno, I went 5-3 I think, and kazu went 4-4 GG results (I think this is it?) 1. Thelo 2. Brice 3. pochp 4. Sam 5. Sophisticat 5. Greenix 7. Airmaster 7. RuroniLonewolf Anyways, I somehow enjoyed doing a best of 1 tournament again, stress is high, every mistake matters way too much. Now that the semester is over and that we have more room to breathe at foonzo, I think we could give weekly single elim tournaments a try. So, let's try one this wednesday and/or thursday at 7pm? Doesn't take too long, and having matches that "count" helps focusing and improving imo. [blog] Lots of discussion on improvement, motivation, and that kind of stuff. I just feel like it's very satisfying to be good at something. Sometimes the road is not all that fun, and in the case of fighting games its a process that never ends because your opponents are always improving as well. Whether its that sick combo you were practicing, that mixup you blocked in a tournament because your friend back home did it to you, that anti-air you punished because you finally figured out the spacing to make it whiff, or just that neutral where you both haven't hit each other yet and your opponent has his back to the corner... It just feels great when you see the results of your efforts. In this particular case, I sometimes question why I play. I get mad salty when I lose, I often don't really care when I win. I enjoy playing a lot of characters, but besides one, I'm not really attached to them (like seriously besides BB, every other game I play, I dunno who my main is). I tell myself I play to improve, and try to learn from my mistakes, but I adapt so damn slowly I wonder how much I'm actually improving. I can see some progress on my end, but compared to some of the other players I've seen join the scene, some learn faster, some learn slower. I don't really know the exact moment when I wasn't completely terrible any more, but sometimes I wish I still was. Every game is so stressful, don't want to let other people beat me and feel themselves (but hey if they do they earned it and I have to step it up). In the end, I think I just play because I enjoy the competitive environment that these games give us, as a hobby. Made a bunch of friends through it, we all have similar interests and get along pretty well. There are no "pro players" that you'd need to play as a full time job to compete with. I can help people improve too by posting content, sharing strategies, giving advice. Get to improve locally, put your skills to the test when travelling to tournament. It really feels like a team thing when you travel too. You root for your training partners because you know that you helped them get there. Going to a tournament gives good motivation boost to practice up, and it's also nice to see people you haven't seen in a while. I know a lot of people here don't travel, and while I feel like they're missing out on a lot of fun, I know everyone has different priorities and reasons for playing. The same goes for training mode, netplay, actually coming to meetups, having a certain mindset, and just playing in general. I've had a lot on my mind lately, and felt like sharing some of it. Sorry for the long post. [/blog]
Kazuhiro Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I thought Round robin was fun. You get to play everyone there at least once and you don't feel like you're completely out when you lose two times in a row. Also, like you said, it helps in being more solid since it's best of one.
Thelo Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 About that Kliff instant overhead: [01:30] Thelo: oh yeah Pedro was wondering how to get real damage off of instant overhead Kliff j.K [01:30] Thelo: I don't actually remember how it works [01:31] Lofobal: you need the right spacing [01:31] Lofobal: also you need to do the chain combo slowly in any case [01:31] Lofobal: depends if you get the j.H launch or not [01:32] Lofobal: if you get the launch in the corner you get ●K→P S-roar FRC →H etc [01:33] Lofobal: ok, first instant overhead i saw didn't combo [01:34] Lofobal: not sure why, guess he did it too slow [01:34] Lofobal: it's really fucking finicky [01:36] Thelo: Introducing: Kliff [01:36] Lofobal: the kliff experience [01:37] Lofobal: next instant overhead he had the right spacing and hit but ended in drill [01:37] Lofobal: i never do drill, i either let it rock or do plunge [01:38] Lofobal: plunge will combo if it didn't launch, and usually but not always if it did [01:38] Lofobal: if it did launch, K into →P S-roar is better [01:38] Lofobal: you even get a safejump setup off that combo, wow [01:38] Lofobal: if you dont spend meter [01:38] Lofobal: you just do a TK drill after the s-roar, you have time
Thelo Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Also about that weirdo airthrow tech thing: [02:02] Thelo: at some point tonight, in casuals, I jumped towards Brice Potemkin [02:03] Thelo: he did airthrow and I did some motion that was a mix of air michael blade and airthrow attempt [02:03] Thelo: then it looked like we throw-clashed with the air michael blade [02:03] Thelo: as in, went straight from airthrow clash into air michael blade [02:03] Thelo: solid game [02:04] Lofobal: yeah that's the throw break neg edge bug, it looks weird [02:04] Thelo: ?? [02:05] Thelo: what's that bug [02:06] Lofobal: you can throw break with special inputs, i think [02:06] Lofobal: so michael blade can throw break [02:07] Lofobal: like it throw breaks if done at same time? [02:07] Lofobal: or so i've read
RurouniLoneWolf Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 ...Stuff... I wasn't going to say anything because I've been in a very "screw talking" mood for a while now but the cool night air heading home from Foonzo last night was pretty relaxing. I'm somewhat in a mood to talk for a small period of time. I'll just get to the heart of it. You've all misunderstood what I was saying, which is my fault for not really saying much to begin with. The reason I'm planning to play as little as possible while I'm at Foonzo is 100% a personality/social issue. I have as much personality as a rock when I'm playing to improve at best and I'll just go ahead and skip the at worst part of this statement because no one is going to ever see the at worst part. On top of that, the fatigue from playing BB everyday since we got back from April TSB and only noticing tiny microscopic improvements is starting to take its toll. And it's probably only going to get worse from here. tl:dr - I don't really want to risk saying or doing anything that my hurtful to anyone so I'm eliminating the possibility altogether. I appreciate everything everyone's said in these last few posts but I'm not changing my mind on this. I'll still be entering tournaments and any other special events and if for some reason, I come into Foonzo and someone is sitting alone at the stations in need of some button pushing, I will answer the call. I should also probably note that this is only until Evo is over. After Evo, I'll probably take it easy, at least for some time while I get ready for and enjoy UNi:EL and P4AU. The next big tourny for me after Evo is TSB in Tokyo. I haven't really thought too much about what I want to accomplish there other than bring home as much swag as humanly possible but I do know it would be a shame to go all the way to Japan to play games and only be somewhat decent at ASW games Here are some misc stuff that didn't really fit in: - @Blade, I think you might've misunderstood what I was trying to say when we were at Foonzo. Gundam is the only game that I only play Arcade mode in, everything else I netplay. this is partly because I haven't really had time to focus on anything but BB lately and half because I don't know. I'm not really liking the feel of competitve play right now. Feels like there's a lot of people doing things that aren't really pushing them any further to winning until someone makes a mistake. I'm probably wrong though. I'll have to come to a Gundam meetup one of these days and have Air show me what the deal is but not now because BB is literally all I think about right now when I'm not at work - @Sam, I have not practiced that particular blockstring. The reason for this is that I'm really having trouble consistently doing the instant overhead in a real match to begin with so I'm trying to focus on that first. - On the topic of winning, hmmmmm, I wouldn't say I care about winning and losing in the traditional sense. When you've played about 3000 matches across various fighting games and lose almost all of them, you just sort of naturally learn to be permanently dead on the inside when you play. If I lose, it's whatever. If I win, chances you were doing something horribly wrong and I was exploiting it so I'm also whatever about it. I indirectly care about winning and losing though in the sense that I get easily irritated if it feels like I'm wasting people's time. I know this isn't something I should be worrying so much about but I do and I probably always will so meh. Now then, on to other things. Congrats to Heartless and Thelo for winning the Round Robin and GG tournament respectively. Running that GG bracket was great. I'm a lot more confident/ready to run brackets at UMAD now. Personally, I found the round robin very interesting because it gave me a chance to see how comfortable I am with a variety of matchups. The final tally in my head went Noel - Comfortable. Almost as comfortable as fighting Ragna at this point Hakumen - Comfortable. Litchi - Comfortable Mu - Indifferent Kagura - Slightly uncomfortable because it's hard to deal with 6D~C at mid to close range sso I'm always second guessing what I want to do in this range. Valkenhayn - Uncomfortable Tager - Uncomfortable Kokonoe - Very very uncomfortable. When's the 1.1 patch? This matchup will probably get much more tolerable when I don't have to live in fear of getting hit by activate Reyn, since you were asking about it last week, here's the info for the official Evo SG side tourny. Pools are Friday, Top 16 or 32 is on Saturday night. Register online to save $5 or pay $15 when you get there. Also, it hadn't occurred to me until now because I forgot this was even an issue at Evo but have you put some thought into what controller you're going to use at Evo? I don't think PS3 wireless pads are allowed. Be sure to check it out. And finally, since I'm already posting, quick reminder that Squigly's free period is coming to an end tomorrow! Be sure to pick her up ASAP and Big Band too while you're at it! All right, I'm going back into permanently irritated mode now. It's time for tonight's play session.
samthegreat Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 - @Sam, I have not practiced that particular blockstring. The reason for this is that I'm really having trouble consistently doing the instant overhead in a real match to begin with so I'm trying to focus on that first. First you practice the instant overhead blockstring + confirm in training mode, then when you have it down 100%, you think about doing it in a match, not the reverse. This x4 blockstring is merely a method to practice faster. You can just go (5B > j.2DA > j.B) x4 as well if you don't wanna think about the fuzzy guard just yet. So do practice that! Also Heartless I will be available pretty much 24h/24 during the whole week to play. Not on netplay, mind you.
AirMaster Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I'll have to come to a Gundam meetup one of these days and have Air show me what the deal is but not now because BB is literally all I think about right now when I'm not at work Kagura - Slightly uncomfortable because it's hard to deal with 6D~C at mid to close range sso I'm always second guessing what I want to do in this range. I honestly don't know how long I'll keep doing Gundam meetups. They've been dead for the past month or so and I have better things to do than wait all evening for someone to show up at Foonzo... And to deal with 6D~C in mid/close range, just block or crouch under it. You can mash 2A and it'll beat it.

I did do it that way but I have a lot of trouble going from training mode to a real match with pretty much everything I do. I might be able to consistently get it one day but I need to get rid of some bad habits and build some good ones when I play in matches first. Wait, you can 2A that move?!?!!?!...Must sleep now but training moding this tomorrow. Thanks AIr!
ReynTime180 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 If worse comes to worse, I have a wired pad, although it's not as good and comfortable
AirMaster Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Wait, you can 2A that move?!?!!?!...Must sleep now but training moding this tomorrow. Thanks AIr! iirc, it doesn't hit crouching opponents. EDIT: Not feeling too well today, so won't be at foonzo today.

Yeah sure, but on top of that practice it in training mode in the meantime.
Eshi Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Kaeru told me I should post here. I'm planning to come up with my boyfriend for Thursday-Monday of UMAD weekend. We can always get a hotel but it's an expensive trip so I was wondering if we could crash at anyone's place for the weekend. We're very polite guests, I promise!

Kazuhiro Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Put me in for UNiB! Also, dodged tonight because of work (sorry), but will come tomorrow. Need to play against The Pedrius. Studied the match-up a little bit more and want to practice it. Are thursdays still as packed as before?
