So did Brice 720 the government yet?

You guys are getting more coverage down here. There are also a bunch of warnings if you plan on traveling to Montreal. Ya'll niggas are crazy or somethin'.

Is there a good synopsis of exactly what is going on up there and why? Maybe a website or something? I don't trust the news, as they tend to focus on stuff that is irrelevant.

I remember talking about it a little bit with Brice, and he made it sound like you guys are just pretty much getting bent over and you want to stop it. When they mean "raising tuition" does that mean they're raising the tuition per credit? Tuition per semester for a full-time student? Tuition per year for a full-time student?

So that would mean the dollar amount would change between schools.

What's the average tuition in Montreal?

It whiffed. Inb4 brice disagrees with everything I'm posting, and I seriously hope it doesn't start a debate in this thread, I'm trying to stay neutral here.

Basically there are a bunch of student strikes, every night until the situation gets fixed, and sometimes bigger ones, this week on Tuesday afternoon 250k-ish people participated in a protest. There was a new law last week that requires any protest to announce it's itinerary and obtain approval from the police for groups of 50 or more people. It's pretty much an attempt to make protesting illegal. This law also forced students to return to class at some point in August, which wasn't really coordinated with schools, and we don't know how they're all going to deal with this. News and facebook everywhere are going to be biased and manipulative so don't trust what isn't a fact.

What happens is that there are people in these protest that call themselves the black block and they just want to break stuff and cause chaos. The police try to keep them in check, but they also do a lot of stuff against passive protesters, like arresting over 100 in last night's protest. The police also do stuff like "block a bridge before the students do it" "break glass in shops near protests and make it look like they were investigating something" "shoot rubber bullets and smoke grenades at crowds". So yeah, it's pretty hard for the police to keep things under control, but they're also doing a lot of "wrong" stuff.

Seriously, there's videos of this stuff. One of them showed police just invading a bar because a few clients outside shouted stuff at the officers in the street. Broke a lot of stuff, the owner said everyone left without paying, he just lost a ton of money there.

what bibi said is kinda correct. they've done a few offers, like have it over a longer period of time, etc.

So that would mean the dollar amount would change between schools.

average tuition is like 2500 per year for a full time student. yes you read that right. 2500. yes we're complaining that they want to increase it.

the issue is that the majority of students need some kind of loan to pay these costs anyways, so increasing the amount will only make their debts bigger. The increase in funds the universities get is going to be combined with a reduction of what the government is currently giving them, so they aren't getting that much more. How the universities spend the money is currently a really important part of the debate because there have been many cases of big wastes of funds recently. People say that if the universities spent the money better they wouldn't need to increase tuition fees.

edit: it's hard to stay neutral lolol

Must... Resist... Debating...

[/Failure]

I think this issue goes beyond mere tuition fees, though. There's a lot of shit that's wrong with Quebec, and these protests are bringing them out in the light.

Anyway, so I don't TL;DR, I'll just say Qc needs to:

- Inject loads of Capitalism into its system

- Strip pension funds/entitlements/social welfare stuff to a minimum

- Kick the union's collective arses for having too much power.

- Lower taxes (50 frikkin' %, are you frikkin' kidding me?)

- Clean up the corruption in various industries

- Re-evaluate the current state of the "free" educational and medical systems. Seriously reconsider their benefits

I, for one, would love to get my grubby mits on (non-rigged) financial statements as to the state of the gov't's, the Universities', and other public/private bodies involved in gov't dealings. You can make much more informed decisions once you know the proper numbers, because I'm not sure anyone here really knows what they are.

ok. let me write what i know and see. coming soon, the difference between quebec and syria : we don't shoot protesters with live ammunition... yet!.

jokes aside, i'll post what is happening in quebec from the standpoint of a student going to protests and following the information going around as much as i can. get hype.

Considering going. Depends on a few things like, money, transport, hurricanes, etc. I'm guessing it'll have p4u as well.

Pedro, how can you stay neutral?

When I want information on something I don't know enough to have an opinion, I don't want it to be biased, and I'm assuming that's the case for a lot of people.

that is far from how a lot people are

This is why not everyone is made to be a leader. And we can see that with the way pedro has been leading, managing, and organizing the community this past year and a half.
