DerQ Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 (edited) If we're going 5 days, 2 of those will be road traveling, one of them is a side-event for casuals and food/drinks at a bar, sunday might have a side event (prob not) or might just a time to relax playing games or watch tournament finals, saturday is the tournament day. All of them will imply casual games in the hotel room with unknown amounts of drinking by unknown individuals during after hours until way too late in the morning. I get the reasons behind that self-imposed pressure, but it's not 5 days of straight-up competition And you can hardly be undeserving of these parts Edited October 2, 2013 by DerQ
AirMaster Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks for the informative wall of text DerQ. Think I'll just wait and see if there's still room after everyone else confirms their status. I'm interested in going but I'm 99.9& sure that I'm the least deserving to go, lol. Worst Case scenario, I'll try and tag along on the next MTL Field Trip. I'm probably not really deserving to go competitively wise. But if you never travel, you never get to play other players outside the local scene (we're very lucky though. our local scene is godlike). And travelling really motivates to get better tbh (in before kirb says "but you never get better airmaster wwwwww"). So yeah, just play with us at local meetups and then try travelling. It's always lots of fun meeting up with the North East Coast guys and the West Coast guys that come over. And Germany fucking sucks, Brice. France da bes.
Bibiquadium Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I believe my first major was my trigger to get better at this game.
Sophisticat Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Plus, you get an excuse to travel and see more cities/regions of Canada/US that you otherwise might not. Because that's what travelling is about, right? Right?
samthegreat Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 And Germany fucking sucks, Brice. France da bes. Both da bes get out
DerQ Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I believe my first major was my trigger to get better at this game. And travelling really motivates to get better tbh Last year NEC got me interested in BB outside of CP. Didn't play it before that.
RurouniLoneWolf Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks for the thoughts on travelling everyone but it's mostly the thought of an actual good/decent player not going because I decide to go that bothers me. I think a better player would enjoy the trip more all around. I'm definitely going if there's room for me when the dust clears. Also, Germany FTW! Plus, you get an excuse to travel and see more cities/regions of Canada/US that you otherwise might not. Because that's what travelling is about, right? Right? Pffft, if I want to sightsee, I'll just watch landmarks get blown up in a Hollywood Blockbuster :P
Psykotik Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 It's not really any of my business but I'll just throw in my 2c It doesn't matter what your skill level is, you're no less entitled to go to any of these trips than any other member in your scene. Sure, the trip's centered around a video game tournament that reaches srsbns levels of competition but there's more to these trips than the competition; travelling to new places, meeting new people, getting hype for your friends (old and new) and just dicking around in general. You could beat Chris G in the Marvel match of the century and the highlight of your tourney could still be the time you went out for dinner with that Tager player you just met and talked about your top 3 doujin sites and why footjobs are amazing. I'd even say these trips are more about the people than the competition. While the FGC is definitely about improving as a player (and perhaps even as a person), it's also about having a jolly old time with a bunch of like-minded nerds. Do you really want to cheat yourself of the latter? Tldr: if you have the resources and you want to go, go out and enjoy yourself
DerQ Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 (edited) Yeah, whether or not it's NEC or another one less crowded tournament, matters not. I can respect whatever you choose in the end as I'm not you and your reasons are very personal. But Psykotik brings up a fantastic point, whether it's breaking a tournament losing streak in Philly, win some money at local in Ottawa, sleep throughout BB and GG in Toronto, eat some Taisho in New york, show Montreal to our fellow american players, get exploded by Souji's Teddie at 3 AM in the hotel room, the tournament experience is bound to let you meet people, have a good time and care for them. I'll even add to it and say that if you care for the people you'll still spend time with, it can be a perfect fuel to motivate improvement. This is super personal here and I'm not saying I'm right, but I've always wanted to contribute in the FGC in the various ways I can. For a while, I didn't think the best asset you could provide this community would be improving as a player. When you play someone that you'll only meet in 3-4 months after that one weekend, when you talked to them about the game, when you start connecting with them through playing, you want more ways to improve that connection with people. Playing the game and understanding it's mechanics is a conduit for communication, almost like speaking a language. I've felt the barrier of interacting through fighting games with another person at last year's NEC, think it was me playing an hour or so of guilty gear casuals with Troll Badguy I believe. Had barely been playing for a month, but he was patient, understood that my skill level was low and just played it out while being friendly. There was not a super active interaction between us because I had no idea wtf to do outside of press the buttons on the controller. Then it clicks, the reason why everyone travels and meet each other is because of this communication tool called a video game that's fun and entertaining as hell. Being more knowledgeable, playing and evolving as a player gives me far more tools to maximize the enjoyment out of meeting new players to fight against. It's a mutual exchange, whether it be them motivating me or me reaching a point where I can motivate other players to experience a something close to mine, in the end we both win. I want to get better so you can get better to and vice versa. And that's the best asset you can have to contribute to the FGC and for yourself as well. Heck, that even brings back the reason I picked up a copy of BB around January/february. Saw people having fun, matches looked entertaining so I decided to fuck around with Ragna, now I'm motivated enough to be a good moderator for my character's boards on Dustloop and in 3 weeks, I want him to be my best character across all fighting games I've played. When's october... oh wait Anyway, I doubt we'll end up in a situation where we are limited in available car spots and that this is what will truly prevent someone to attend. If someone can't come, it'll most likely be their schedule or money constraints. We'll see. Again, not saying what's right for me is right for you. But damn the list of stories to share is long haha IT'S LIKE CRACK! DON'T DO IT! Edited October 2, 2013 by DerQ
Rhannmah Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 You guys and your hashtags. at everyone using # for no goddamn reason #shutTheFuckUp
kaeru Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 awesome heartfelt post about FGC You impress me every time we speak and every time i see you interact with other individuals. We are lucky to have you.
DerQ Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 (edited) You impress me every time we speak and every time i see you interact with other individuals. We are lucky to have you. Now, let me impress you while playing! We don't live too far from each other, been a while (AKA too long) since I last saw and played you. If you can't come to us, I'll come to you. You don't have a say on this! (Actually you do, too unaware of your situation tbh). Edited October 2, 2013 by DerQ
kaeru Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 If you're free tonight, you can come over. I can pick you up if you wish ! I am not potable at any game atm, but we can socialize while you beat me up.
DerQ Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 No you're free tonight! >:3 I can drive there myself, but if you could just text me the address and time at which I could arrive, it would also add your number back in my contact's list due to my recent phone upgrade.
oDHAOSo Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I dunno about everyone else, but I'll be going to Foonzo on Wednesdays instead of Tuesdays now. Hopefully someone will play me.
pochp Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Don't they have like trivia or retro game night on wednesdays? Can someone let us know if we'd have room for a meetup? Even though I can't come this week nor next week, when we get BBCP...
kirbster Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Trivia and retro games nights are only on the left side of Foonzo (couches), you definitely can use the PS3 spots.
oDHAOSo Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Looks like I overestimated the number of other people who would play Blazblue tonight (at least 1). Someone please come!
RurouniLoneWolf Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 hmmmm, maybe I'm being overly considerate about this? Oh well, that's pretty much how I roll. I'll wait and see how things turn out, at least for a bit. I'd like to get things settled before October is over but stuff happens. Thank you Psykotik and DerQ for sharing your personal experiences and perspective on tournaments. I'd love to hear more of those stories some day DerQ. In other more immediately relevant news!...there's a trivia night at Foonzo? O.O Never knew.
Rhannmah Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 hmmmm, maybe I'm being overly considerate about this? Yes, most definitely. If you want to go, go! Things will probably work out in the end.
