Weren't the previous JP versions all region locked too though? Even though Aksys messed up and announced otherwise for CS, every US iteration so far has worked on a JP console. Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention- Thanks to everyone for the pad recommendations a while back! Finally got and tested one this Friday, and so far it's working great!
