Hey there, relative newcomer to the BB scene here, with a quick question: How does air blocking work?

I was getting a little frustrated when playing online, I would jump in and try to bait AA's and such out, as I had seen videos of tourney's where players would block in the air (I've also seen my opponents do it). Long story short, it works sometimes, others it just doesn't. I noticed I could block Ragna's 5B, but couldn't block his 6A. Do certain moves have different properties when air blocking, or is it that I'm just not barrier blocking, and that's the only way to block in the air? It seems very random. If someone could clarify how it works, it would be extremely appreciated.

some moves can only be barrier blocked while airborne such as Ragna's 5B and 6A. If you barrier block in the air, you shoudl be able to block both so i can only assume you stopped air barrier blocking before you got hit.

other attacks can be normal air blocked such as most projectiles, most air attacks, and most char's 5As

A few moves can not be air blocked (not even air barrier) at all. The only ones that come to mind are tager's atomic collide, carl's fermata, and tao's pounce super.

check the frame data on the wiki. the general rule is use normal block for air attacks, projectles, and 5As. Use barrier for everything else

Beware the exceptions. Hakumen's Hortaru (j.214B) much be barrier'd if you're also in the air, which defies the above general rule.

More like unless you're way too high to get hit by an air unblockable, or if you want to escape an air throw. It's better to barrier block an air blockable 5a to be on the safe side most of the time - pretty sure the only char. with air unblockable 5a is Haku.

The use of air unblockables is to try to stop jump outs during pressure and it's very important in GG, and a relatively new aspect of BB (CS2 introduced most normals being air unblockable). Manta was trying to say moves like Hotaru, or Inferno Divider, even if your opponent is airborne already, you have to barrier them because they are still air unblockable.

Technically you only need to air-barrier GROUND inferno divider; Air inferno divider can be airblocked normally.

Hi. Can someone please clarify why, when I'm airdashing, sometimes my Barrier block doesn't come out, leaving me waving my j.B and getting countered instead? It's a normal airdash, not an IAD.

Hakumen's 5a also must be barriered.
