So, that was a godlike weekend. Thank you Montreal for wanting to host and event and following through. THANK YOU FOONZO. Easily the best venue I've ever been to. It's perfect for tournaments of this size. Good beer, good food, and excellent service. The employees were so nice!

You guys did very well for your first event and I probably only have 1 complaint (things you SHOULD change) and 3 pieces of advice (things that you should THINK ABOUT changing) for your next one:

Complaint

1). Please make GG 2/3 rounds and not 3/5. I'm not sure who made that call officially, but this is the first tournament I've ever seen do this... ever. It added a lot of time to the event. Time is valuable at things like this. I can only complain and whine because it's not my tournament and you guys are allowed to do what you want, but I'm just letting you know that 2/3 rounds is usually the way to go.

Advice

1). There were a couple times where I saw 2 empty BB setups when we were in the middle of brackets. This wastes time. You should always have a match on deck behind the match already being played on that setup. This goes for GG as well. Usually this is something you learn and get better with over time, but I'd thought I'd just share this small piece of advice.

2). If you want to have a stream and you know that the venue internet is sub-par, then make sure you hard-wire your internet. This makes your connection way more stable. If you're going to be far from the access point you should plan for this in advance. Buy yourself a 75-100ft cable (these are actually pretty cheap) and just run it around the walls. Gundam didn't help :< (but you know this).

3). Something I noticed while I was there was that above a couple of the setups there was space for a TV/monitor on the wall. If you guys plan on doing more of these events in the future, you should look into seeing if you could invest in some HDMI splitters: run the signal to the ASUS monitor and the overhead display so that everyone can watch the match that is going on. MLG DOES THIS!!!! The tables were pretty low, so if there were tall people in the front it was hard to see. It was pretty hard to watch the stream setup as well if you weren't a commentator or in the front row. The only real solution I can think of for this is once you get to top 8 for BB/GG, take some of the couches and move the out of the way for spectators and require everyone to sit unless you're in the back. The couches were godlike, but during finals they did more bad then good.

SO, take all of that with a grain of salt. This event was fucking amazing. Your community is amazing. Next time I head up there I'm definitely going to schedule an extra day.

It was really nice to meet new people. I finally got to put some faces with names! To everyone I met, thanks for coming up and introducing yourself. I won't list everyone but just a few people that stood out in my mind:

pochp, you did a good job running brackets for your first big event. Now you know why I don't enter the ones I run!

Bibi, good job setting up your stream. It's a shame the webcams wouldn't work for you. I understand your pain of running a stream ; ;

Kirbster, 2nd place scrub. #USA #USA #USA!!!! Real talk: you're a strong player. Buff your defense and you'll be even scarier. Nice seeing you again. You're too fucking hype.

Brice, thanks for being Brice. Hype machine. Thanks for buying me drinks and taking us to get Poutine. Next time I come up you gotta take me to the godlike spot. Thanks for showing us the way to and from the train station as well. That was a big help.

Kaeru, your Bang was too hype!!! Thanks for buying me a couple drinks. You're an awesome fucking guy.

XDest, fuck your Tao!!!! I hate that match-up!!!

Yucorp, you are the hypest man alive!!!! STAY GODLIIIIIIIKE!

Niniheart, I didn't need your Canadian funny-money anyway!

Canadian guys who come to US tournaments all the time: you know who you guys are. It was nice seeing you all again. Fuck you Roldy for dropping Relius! Traitor!!! We were supposed to have something special :<

To the people I played in tournament:

Dai-Loli: You're the first Plat I ever played so I just kind of winged the match-up. I got lucky!!! Punish back-dashes!!!

Lynthium: Your Mu is solid. It's another match-up I had never played before. That character is really annoying. I got lucky in this match too!

Calm101: I hate Jin!!! I can never win!

K2: Fuck May. Fuck May. Fuck May. Fuck May. But I took your burst so it's all good!

Ntype: Lows beat Jam parry. Your Anji is good, and you would've won if you had more match-up EXP.

Zeero: I got robbed and I want my run-back sometime in the future! (Shoutouts to 4 command-grab shots.)

I hope you guys keep running more events like this, and if at all possible, try to make it down to the US for ECT and/or NEC. NEC will be the hypest tournament ever this year! You won't want to miss it! The more people who come down the more hype it will be!

STAY GODLIKE CANADA!!!

oh, one more advice for the future, nothing big but just being picky

I played a lot of toronto guys, im not sure if this was because there was like 10+ of us from toronto in a 40 man tourney, but I was hoping I'd play more others =( This wasnt too bad I suppose

I'm not sure how the brackets were run but it felt like you ran the whole winners brackets as far as possible before going into losers? I say this because I played like 4 games in the winners bracket until I lost, meanwhile Leo who was in losers only played one? Then I had a huge wait until I played my game in losers bracket. Its not a huge deal and I guess theres no strict way of running it, but IMO its usually better to keep the tourney going in both ways.

I was the sole person taking care of everything Guilty Gear related. Fetching players, running the brackets, playing in the tournament, entering results, etc. If you have complaints, file them to me. But first let me explain why I ran things the way I did.

Keep in mind that Guilty Gear was a main event just as much as BlazBlue was. So the 3/5 rounds was so the tournament would run roughly the same kind of length that the BlazBlue tournament did, seeing as Guilty Gear plays like twice as fast.

I also basically stopped the tournament during the BlazBlue finals to give people a chance to watch it. I had to spend quite sometime after the KoF finals to get the stream up and running, again leaving the tournament hanging.

But personally I am very satisfied with how things went, we got a heap ton of Guilty Gear games streamed and the tournament as a whole was a blast, even if I had to run everywhere like a madman to get things going. 1st tournament I ever ran, too. Sure it could've been better, but I tried to do my best. Live and learn.

criticisms: don't make gg 3/5 rounds 2/3 games, either 2/3 2/3 or 3/5 single, takes too long for what I must sadly call a dead game. The time spent on GG could have been BB teams or something else that would attract more people.

at that, I have to :psyduck:

A game is never dead as long as there are players to play it. We had 25 entrants for Guilty Gear, hardly what I'd call a "dead" game. Again, Guilty Gear was a main event, just as important as BlazBlue. If you want to revive Guilty Gear, you have to give it the exposure it deserves. Come watch the top 8, hype it up, cheer for the players, make it come alive. This is the main reason I tried to get all the matches streamed as much as possible. Exposure. Especially with the guys from Toronto, who are fucking beasts at the game. It deserves to be recorded and shared with the rest of the FG community.

You know it. I must start igniting an Ottawa Burning Flame thing. Thanks for the matches by the way. An if I wind up with some spare money on my PSN I MIGHT pick SG up. Just as long as the online's not one of those "2 player only" lobby things and I can at least get a 4 person room out of it or whatnot.

My turn for shoutouts.

Shoutouts to Foonzo. Most godlike venue ever. Srsly MTL, you don't know how spoiled you are for having that place.

Shoutouts to all of the MTL crew, as usual you guys are DA BESS! I've found myself not wanting to play fighting games very much recently but the hype you guys bring reminds me why I started playing in the first place.

Shoutouts to Americans. It was fun playing people I've never played before in GG. I was one of the two TO Slayers.

Shoutouts to starting drinking at 2pm.

Shoutouts to Three Pistoles.

Shoutouts to Leo and Pui in GG.

Shoutouts to Leo's parking job.

Shoutouts to the C-Dub.

Shoutouts to Mallorytown.

Shoutouts to Mammorytown.

Shoutouts to the epic fog on the way back to Toronto.

As for criticisms, I'll just re-state what's already been said about GG. 3/5 rounds took too long blah blah blah. I also think that GG probably should've been running while the BB tournament was happening, or maybe 2 hours after BB started or something like that and then maybe just get to top 4 or top 8 and stream all of those matches.

Anyways, this tournament was fucking awesome and I'm really happy I decided to not be Team NAH. I'm definitely going to come to MAD2 next year, and hopefully I'll be able to make it out to NEC at the end of this year.

I'm extremely sad I missed out on this tourney.

Rhannmah: The tourney should be 2/3 rounds because this is standard tourney format for GG. If the problem was the amount of exposure, then you could have rolled out some exhibition matches or just streamed some casuals. I'm sure most of the TO GG heads would have loved to put on a show for the stream monsters. Other than that, good stuff on running the tourney. Your passion for the game is admirable, I once used to be like you but I've since lost my burning tamashi. :(

I think we should all blame Brice for not posting the tourney format ahead of time in the MAD thread. :keke:

Thanks to everyone for making it! Seems like the first edition of MAD went pretty well given it was our first time organizing something of that caliber. We'll use this experience and learn from our mistakes to make MAD2 the hypest shit ever. Now for some mainstream shoutouts :

Shoutouts to Foonzo staff for making this possible and being great to our community, as always.

Shoutouts to Toronto for getting plastered before anything even started lol. You guys are asian, you should take it easy... (Omar is fine though). It was so much fun to chill with you guys, like always!

Shoutouts to John for being fucking gdlk at BB even when drunk. I played a bit of Tekken with Mike, I totally forgot to go get you :(

Shoutouts to Pui for showing me the only way to play Ragna : BALLS DEEP

Shoutouts to K2 for trying out new things in life, even though it makes me a bit sad a bit

Shoutouts to XDest for exposing my 6a mashing, I almost lost my cool lol

Shoutouts to LK for taking our money with such a shitty character  but yeah, good shit as expected, stay gdlk

Shoutouts to St1ckbug for gdlk commentating and just adding that much more hype to the whole thing. It was awesome to have you here.

Shoutouts to Biscuits for officially allowing me to say nigga from now on.

Shoutouts to Pedro for busting your ass running this whole thing. You are the driving force behind MTLBB!

Shoutouts to Bibi for taking care of the stream. The result kinda sucked but it was mostly out of your control so don't worry about it, next time you'll be ready! Also shoutouts to being a BeerBlue god.

Shoutouts to Brice for having to put up with disgusting matchups. Just imagine that Plat has a dick when she has the Sena persona and play her!

Shoutouts to Kaeru for all that tamashii. Real talk, without you there this event would be so much less hype. Thanks for supporting me so much during finals and spreading my new nickname lol

Shoutouts to Nini for turning out to be a free win <3

Shoutouts to Katie and Simon for repping eastmost coast Canada, our ESS-TIER casuals on Sunday were too gdlk!

Shoutouts to Freezerburn and Livewire for repping Ottawa, even though we didn't get to play. I'm grouping you two in this shoutout and it kinda makes you look like a couple too, but no homo

Shoutouts to everyone else who I spoke to and/or played with.

Shoutouts to Opeth

Weirdly enough, we weren't the only Ottawa people there; we were the only Ottawa people that played BlazBlue. Someone that plays SF4 came with his buddy, who played Gundam. We each didn't know that the other was going.

That said, I gotta get my BB practice in and get the others to rep Ottawa harder. I've never been wrecked so many times.

gg's guys~

foonzo's such a great venue~ was a little hot by the stream station but the food and service is awesome~

our trip planning was alittle rushed and we ended up alittle late but next time we will plan better

guilty gear kinda ran really late, we wanted to go for food but we didn't know the area well and didn't want to stray too far~ need to research the area a bit more and plan some eating spots

we didn't intend to drink before anything even started but we sampled some random local Montreal beer and it was so good we had to have more~

i need to work on my arakune more~ was way too rusty because i've been playing other characters the last month but im starting to feel a bit of that arakune hype again

yay skull girls~ was fun playing against other people locally~
