Face-2-Face Interviews

By Guest, in Home,

Fellow Dustloop member Shinsyn0021 has been putting together some great interviews featuring various fighting game players like Lord Knight, A.X.I.S. TheBeast, and Brandino. These interviews are meant to get Face-2-Face with the players and learn about how they got into fighting games, meets and tournaments in their scene, their interests in other games, the dreaded "playing online" question and many more. Be sure to check out my personal favorite interview feat. A.X.I.S. TheBeast below.

Parasoul, Reporting For Duty!

By Guest, in Home,

The latest promotional video for Skullgirls highlights the proud and noble Parasoul, princess of the Canopy nation.

Parasoul is a veritable character with a lot of tools and options at her disposal; she can launch self detonating tears of napalm, call forth soldiers to drag you across the screen or protect her from projectiles, and even has some great normals with good reach. Her Super moves consist of concentrated gunfire and a barrage of soldiers on motorcycles. She also has a unique way of moving around as she walks in strides, the start up is quick (great for tick grabs) and then followed by a slow advance (good for spacing).
[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
All and all Parasoul is a very unorthodox character and will require some skill and dedication to master, but she will reward your loyalty by allowing you to crush your opponent beneath your heel.

This trailer also gives a very solid and uninterrupted listen to Parasoul's voice actress, Erin Fitzgerald. She is known for a variety of roles in various anime (Kekkaishi, Ranma 1/2, Saber Marionette, Bleach) and video games (Catherine, .hack//GU, Eternal Sonata, Sakura Wars: So Long My Love).

For more information be sure to check out the ever expanding Parasoul character thread in the Skullgirls section!

Skullgirls releases on Playation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in early 2012.

Continuum Shift Extend & News Roundup

By Guest, in Home,

BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend will be hitting Japanese retailers 12/17/2011 as a launch title on the Playstation Vita and simultaneously on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, with all 3 versions carrying a price tag of ¥5980 (approx. $78) confirming a retail release for the console versions. To recap Continuum Shift Extend brings all character download content from the original Continuum Shift and puts it all in one comprehensive disc, it also features a revised Calamity Trigger story, 4 new scenarios following all the newly added characters, and an additional 4 "joke" scenarios to be found as well. There will also be a new opening animation and theme (蒼穹の光 - Soukyuu no Hikari by Faylan)
[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
First print copies of the Japanese versions will include a special soundtrack that compiles all the new audio tracks added since the original Continuum Shift.

Mori has already confirmed downloadable content for Extend however he did not comment on the exact nature of it, but following the previous history of past games we can probably expect more color palettes and maybe even characters beyond Relius...

Aksys games has already confirmed that that will indeed be bringing over Extend to North American territories for the Vita but have yet to announce plans for the console versions (it should also be noted that American Vita titles are slated for a standard pricing of $39.99, and this was the same price the original Continuum Shift released under for the PS3 and 360 in region).

Relius has been promised to be patched into arcade versions of Continuum Shift II before this month's end, so we should be getting a good look at him soon enough, until then you can check out the promotional video for Extend.

In other news a new vocal soundtrack will be releasing around the same time as well, BlazBlue in L.A. -VOCAL EDITION- will be on sale 12/14/2011 for ¥3,150 (approx. $41), the title is reminiscent of a Guilty Gear soundtrack of a similar title. It will include vocalized versions familiar themes which include:

01: Rebellion
02: Gluttony Fang
03: Weak Executioner
04: SUSANOOH
05: Active Angel
06: Rubble Song
07: Black Onslaught
08: Under Heaven Destruction
09: Endless Despair
10: Lust Sin
11: Awaking The Chaos

And to finish out the news round up Arc will be continuing their collaboration with gravure idol Iiniku Ushijima in a series of photo shoots that started with Noel Vermilion, then Makoto Nanaya, and now Litchi Faye Ling. The latest set is planned to launch along side next month's Arcadia magazine (which hits retailers on 9/30/2011).

[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

Huey: Sure, why not.
C0R: Ok, ok. We're recording, we're recording. Do you want to do the honors?
Blargster: Give him the chicken, the chicken!
Huey: Hello, my name is Landis, and I'm going to make some chicken and waffles.
NiggaJoe: Erryday I'm drizzilin!
Huey: See that? UNH
sG: Man get that shit out of here.
-Crowd vocalizes their horror-
Huey: WOA, WOA WOA WAIT, WE'RE NOT DONE. We're not done.
sG: So these are the kind of people I'm involved with.
Huey: AaaaaAaaaAAAAaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! WOO!
sG: I'm not sure how I've stayed in the scene this long.
C0R: Alright.
Huey: Thirty seconds homie, let's go.
PlasticChicken: There's not enough Jack Daniels...
sG: NOT ENOUGH JACK DANIELS?!
-Lots of people talking-
NiggaJoe: You can have, the rest of the Jack Daniels, if, you don't put a pussy amount of Tabasco sauce on it.
C0R: Oh, we have, the questions.
Blargster: You better open that damned door!
C0R: sG! sG we have the questions.
sG: Okay.
C0R: Can you give us a short introduction, about who you are, and what you're all about in the scene?
sG: I'm sG...
Huey: I'm gay!
sG: My real name is Derek...
Huey: I'm gay.
-Lols-
sG: I guess that's what the scenes' about.
Huey: Bromance!
sG: Bromance, and uh... some video games, I guess.
Blargster: Derek I'll see you tonight!
sG: ...Yeah. Uh, it's been largely the same for all four years.
-someone slaps sG on the ass, everyone looks at PlasticChicken-
sG: There you go.
C0R: How large, or active is the scene?
sG: If you pan the camera around the room, that's pretty much it.
-closeups on Kaigu > Spark > Tari > W0ki > Bohemian Polka-
sG: There's, there's some more people, but this is pretty much it.
Blargster: I'm sorry, I'm sorry!
sG: I'm not talking about you! Shut the fuck up!
Blargster: Why you gotta be angry?
Bohemian Polka: Yeah that's Derek, he's a cool guy.
C0R: And we have me!
-closeup on C0R-
sG: I hope you know that didn't do anything, I hope you know.
C0R: Shut up nigga.
Bohemian Polka: So, what are...
C0R: Oh, right right.
C0R: What are your meets...
sG: I like how everyone can see that we're reading the questions off the laptop.
C0R: Hold on, hold on. What are your meets generally like and how often do you hold meets?
sG: Uh, we meet up, generally, twice a week.
-Huey eats chiken and waffles-
sG: We usually meet at, at THIS GUY'S PLACE.
-sG fondles' huey's nipple-
sG: You're having a good time right?
sG: And we usually meet up at Spark's place, where we're at right now.
C0R: Alright. What do you like best about your scene, and what do you (tongue twister), ick, what do you think is the scene's strong suit?
sG: What I like best about the scene, is... well, you know, I'm sure you can tell.
sG: What was the other part of the question?
C0R: What do you... what do you feel is the strongest suit about the scene.
sG: Uh, we're all pretty friendly with eachother.
C0R: I see.
sG: Yeah, aside from that, and hitting Rebecca with the freezer door. Um, you know we don't always just play Blazblue. You know, we've gone like, out to the mountians and shit.
sG: And tomorrow...
Blargster: and Karaoke!
sG: And Karaoke. Tomorrow, me, Landis and Jason are going to the Casino, win big.
C0R: Oh, we're moving. We're moving.
C0R: Okay so. Hold on (x3).
C0R: What are some major tournaments in your area?
sG: We... don't really have any! Actually. We have Northwest Majors coming up soon, but we don't actually have a lot of tournaments. I guess it's something I would like to see more of, but I don't think it's actually that big of a problem.
PlasticChicken: Because we all love eachother.
C0R: Because we all love eachother.
NiggaJoe: I hate everybody.
sG: I think throwing money into the mix just... tears us apart.
PlasticChicken: It's true.
sG: Fuck you.
C0R: Uhmmm... Is tournament attendance important to your scene? I guess we already answered that.
sG: I don't really think so, actually. We meet up often enough that sometimes even our best players don't show up to tournaments. Alex doesn't really enter tournaments. Around here, ever.
Huey: No! His name must be a mystery on the internet, forever.
sG: Yeah, I know.
C0R: Not anymore! Unlike Bobby Maverick.
sG: Bobbeh! Shoutouts to Bobby Maverick.
C0R: If someone was interested in joining the scene, but wasn't sure if they should attend meets, what would you tell them?
sG: Get over it? You know, I guess uh, it can be a little intimidating to first get into the scene because everyone already knows eachother so well. But, I really don't think any of us are, mean or anything. I don't think it's hard to get into the scene.
sG: So, yeah. Throw a post up on Dustloop, and you're pretty much good to go.
C0R: Okay, okay. What else should people know about your area?
sG: Uh... Space Needle! And GUILTY GEAR.
Kaigu: And Starbucks... and Starbucks.
sG: Did you know there's a Starbucks at the bottom of the Space Needle, and one at the top, in case you get thirsty on the elevator ride.
Huey: There's no Roscoe's here, so we have to make our own.
sG: BUT, you know what we do have?
sG: We have DICK'S.
-lols-
sG: We have Dick's.
sG: It's a burger place.
sG: Is that the last question?
C0R: Yeah.
sG: Okay one more thing. Come here sir.
-grabs PlasticChiken-
sG: I would like to give a shoutout to my producer Jason Kim.
Huey: This guy made it possible.
sG: I wouldn't be this far today without Jason Kim.
Huey: Thank you dad... I mean Jason.
C0R: Okay, well, I think that... that wraps it up.
C0R: Okay, thanks guys! Everybody says bye.
Huey: Oh yeah, I won the last tournament.

"Meet Your Mod" Episode. 22: Honnou

By Guest, in Home,

This week: Honnou

Why did you choose that particular handle, is there a story or reference you'd like to explain?

My handle comes from my love for the singer Shiina Ringo, because of her unique style and presentation. Also, the word means 'instinct' in Japanese, which I believe is one of the strongest factors along with experience that you need for fighting games.

What is your background with fighting games...Did you start with BB or are you OG like SFII?

I remember first playing SFII in the local arcade when I was about 10 years old, with the older crowd yelling at me, "throw a sonic boom!", and I had no idea how to. It was a frustrating experience to say the least! I'd mash it on PC with a friend when we were young, and I also played MK1 & MK2 with friends when they'd come over, but whenever someone got "too good", the other would get frustrated/bored and we'd change the game.

Around the same time, I would go to the arcade next to my Dad's work as I waited for him to finish his shift. They had what I knew at the time as "Darkstalkers" there, and I was fascinated with the character variety, fast gameplay and presentation. I chose Rikuo/Aulbath first and thought he was the coolest. As a young artist, I'd doodle FG stuff here and there but didn't bother keeping up with the games, except the occasional awful one (Biofreaks N64) and some MVC1.

Things changed in 2003-2004 when a friend recommended I try Guilty Gear XX for the PS2, as he thought it would suit my taste. I worked at Blockbuster at the time and found out we had 1 or 2 copies that were pre-played for sale. I immediately picked it up and played it every day. I couldn't even do Baiken's Youzansen (air SRK) when I started the game. I was god-awful. I was going to community college at the time and learned that they had a 'rec room', with TV's donated from the college where everyone played various games, TCG, etc. It was there that I first met other people playing GGXX, and we'd constantly try to one-up each other. A potemkin player from Canada named Sam showed me a site with these combo vids by "Teioh", and also a site with ranbats called "A-cho". I was hooked and started saving as many of the vids as I could each time they came out. We started a small scene at that rec room and I eventually branched off and met other nearby players, as well as played abroad in Japan for 1 year, going against such big GG names as FAB, Karun, Jonio-o, Satu, H.H., Kishitaka, Nakamura and so forth.

What competitive scene are you involved with? (Ranbats, Arcades, XBL, PSN, Reload Online etc.) Would you elaborate the benefits of this particular scene?

I'm involved with local ranbats @ NorCal Install (NCI), play on XBL regularly (mostly Mass Effect & Catherine), and host personal gatherings constantly. Online play is great for exposure to people playing other characters/teams, but the feeling of a real opponent sitting near you, pressuring you, and the execution going out the window really kill it for me. I play x-23 in Marvel and almost refuse to use her online because of how much I have to dumb her combos down. Skipping to the other two, hosting gatherings and attending ranbats is the way to go. Make connections with people, network with new players and see what you can do in your local scene. It's fun for just the game, but you'll likely meet friends and potential business partners along the way, and they become a family to you. I love positive people and I've found them even in poverty games.

How strong do you feel your nation is as a whole, what is the next step to strengthening it?

I would've had a completely different answer to this years ago, and especially pre-EVO2k11. I feel that America (fuck yeah!) is stronger than it has ever been. While we still suck really really REALLY badly at 3rd Strike, we've come a long way, held marvel down, leveled up so much in SFIV games, and are getting better at air-dash games (congrats to spark!!!). Now if only people would start playing GG again...

Remember, Japanese aren't good at games inherently, they just have the best exposure and consistent competition in the world. We have a much bigger country and slower internet, so it is harder here, but not impossible. Support your local arcade, strengthen your scene, attend ranbats, contribute strategies where there are none, make vids full of all your little tricks, and when all else fails, be an online/stream monster.

Which player(s) give you the most trouble and why?

RF perfected me once or twice at EVO2k11. Haha, I can't touch him...other than that, I feel that in Norcal, Tenkai (Johnny) and Dakanya (Jam) are two of the only Guilty Gear players that give me trouble. Ehuangsan (Ky) is great too, but he never practices, doesn't own the game, and doesn't go for stun edge frc, the sexiest thing in the game. I'd give a shoutout to Magz aka AJ, but I feel that it is Slayer, not him that is giving me trouble (Jk, you're good, AJ). Around the nation, Hellmonkey (baiken, your pot sucks ;o), Elvenshadow (faust), AKA (Millia), Jo (Johnny, better than A3R hands down) and others constantly amaze me with their skill. There are plenty of other good players out there and up-and-comings, so keep it up guys.

What has been the most helpful tool while growing stronger in GG, BB, etc.?

Losing. Winning never made me better. Every time I lose, I get a chance to think about what just happened, and what else I could do about it. I learn about when to counter-attack, when to not, and so forth. For GG, I was a download-video monster for a long time, just copycat-ing what JP players did. It worked and still works, but you have to really understand why the players are making the decisions they do at their level to fully implement it into your own game. For BB, a lot of it was GG experience, and the rest was the CT DVD (amazing) and talking to smart players for tips.

Is there anything you'd like to share regarding your respective character or Dustloop in general?

Hm, I play I-no (but can also use Slayer, Potemkin, Sol, Zappa, Ky, Order Sol, Faust, Baiken) and Tager (learning Valk and Hakumen on the side)

For Tager, keep the dream going, and watch vids of Akira's tager. You don't get many chances with that character so...Defense defense defense defense and smart reads.

For I-no, I love her and wouldn't have been able to learn her if not for Caveman, MynusDono, and all the others who have contributed. I've killed my fair share of Mays with I-no as revenge for a bad matchup (looking at you BlueNine), and I want to do some vids for her soon. She is a fun character and although hard to learn, she reflects your true skill as a player fairly well. That's the same reason I love Tager, as I feel how well I do reflects how much work I've put in.

Pick the character you like, the strong ones if you're attracted to that, or just the cool ones like I do. Stick to your guns, learn your bad matchups twice as hard as the others, and have fun!
