[P4A] Yosuke Critique and Self-Improvement Thread
OutlawVinegar replied to Chazmobile's topic in Archive
I don't feel like I'm the best candidate to provide criticism, but no one else is saying anything, so... You already addressed it, but get the execution on your FC comboes down; in my experience, as Yosuke players get better, they land fewer and fewer (i.e. they throw out fewer random) FC 2Cs, so it's really important to make them count. You really seem to like Torowa's 5D 2B IAD crossup glide 5DD mixup, but a little too much; your opponents were getting wise to it and getting out with little damage/for free after a while, by either eating the 5DD non-CH (in which case you were on the ground and couldn't chase), or rolling out (getting full-screen, which isn't terrible for a failed mixup, but you lose the advantage). You always seemed to go for the left/right, when they seemed to be respecting it enough to try something else. Give your opponents a situation where they have to guess; IAD + Moonsault for a double crossup, throw bait, occasionally roll to mess up their timing, or if you read a roll, backstep and at least get a CH grab. Shabrys Command grab setups are beaten by varying your techs; the 'normal' setup is beaten by doing a delayed tech, but Shabrys players afaik can beat that by delaying the command grab, which is then beaten by instant teching, etc. It's a dangerous setup that still works because there's no guaranteed way to get out of it, besides wakeup Gold Burst. -
"Falls asleep" and "Lays down" are different descriptions, though. I assumed at when you wrote "lays down" something more akin to Fei Long's taunt in SFIV, personally.

I'd also like to support Digital Watches' post being made a front page thing, and/or maybe a SRK front page thing.

I willingly volunteer to cook or assist if anyone wants to attempt this. I rarely cook, but that's not due to lack of skill or knowledge: it's simply because I have no motivation to cook for just myself. I can make a pretty good Spaghetti Napolitan, from what I've been told. When it comes right down to it, if you took the average Denny's bill when split between everyone and spent just half of it on groceries and drinks, casuals could have a feast pretty much any time people got together.

GGs to netplay, for real this time. Thanks to everyone who trashed me, particularly DigitalOps and an Elizabeth player whose name eludes me. I'm learning to bait DPs again while simultaneously learning to be disrespectful. I need to practice new mixups, and go into training and work out some alternative pressure.

It's 5 PM and I've finally pulled myself out of bed. I would've posted that I made it home safely shortly after returning, but it was a looong trip back, and I'd been awake around 26 hours straight, so certain things took priority. Shoutouts and all that jazz Why for hosting, and your mother for baking cookies. Hopefully you won't be a total stranger while you handle your school stuff. Vyers and Rainbow Mash, it was cool to finally meet you both! Vyers, much quieter and more reserved than I was expecting, and Mash, much more hyper (and hype!). Cheese for bringing half of the casuals party, and willingly toning it down when I asked. I seriously appreciate it. Fraga for giving me some hard knocks in DOA5, figuring out some Double tech in SkullGirls, and showing off some glitchy WWE netplay. Sethy for doing what she seems to do best. I'm still interested in recording some voice samples for this omake stuff, let me know if you are. Glitch for helping me get over my non-tournament 'tournament shakes', and teaching(?) me that sometimes you just have to respect Izuna drops. I'll hook up Dark Awake first thing, next time I see you guys at casuals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAo7KPgPmDI Some match footage of the game in JP Arcades (includes commentary).

GGs to netplay, again. Or something. No, wait, not really. This, 100 times. I should have known to quit while I was ahead when my first match was against a blatantly lag-switching Labrys. I just didn't have the right mindset to be playing at all tonight, I'm so ridiculously discouraged right now.

GGs to everyone I played tonight; bace(?), LPT, FE-4 and others. Sorry for being so free, I'm honestly really disappointed at how badly I choked all night. Feels bad, man.

[CP] Azrael - Gameplay Discussion (Pre-Console Release)

タイガーフェスティバル兄貴 = Tiger Festival Aniki Tiger Festival being an in-game joke in all versions of "Tales of Graces" on Wii and PS3. -
I'd like to rearrange that FT10 I asked you for, BananaKen. Real talk, up until I actually talked to you on PSN a few weeks back, I thought you were some high-level Japanese player when I randomly fought you in Ranked way back when. I saw the obvious parallel between BananaKun and BananaKen (a name I'd seen before in FG chats), but chalked it up to coincidence. .-.

"Cannot Beat California Burst" I'm not an XBL player, but the PSN chat doesn't talk about Titles. I agree with Kobayashi.

Thanks for the detailed response! Though I've been somewhat keeping up with Chaos Code since the initial arcade release, I'm still new enough to fighters that I sometimes forget how single-minded some character's gameplans can be. Now that you mentioned it, I can take a step back and see that Kagari's aerial normals and specials are faster and cover decent space compared to MG Hikaru's air game. Deno Raida is his 'upside down, down-angled' energy move, right? The startup seems a bit too slow to be a useful air-to-air. Knowing that Vein's gameplan is largely about midscreen knockdown oki makes his matchup chart much clearer as well, since his 4/6 matchups all have reliable escape options (Celia II can teleport out presumably, and Cerberus has a selectable reversal[?] and good moves in general). With Hermes' flaws, it sounds kind of like she's an incomplete character by design. Does that seem right? Her ideal situation is one she can't actively or easily force her opponent into, and it looks like her normals are a bit subpar for competing with most of the cast. Cait & Sith were pretty common and a strong choice during the first release of the game. I remember their infinites, 100% stun loops, and decent spacing game, but now that the game is in version 1.02 I've never seen them played, so I wasn't aware of the extent of the nerf. The only one I'm aware of is cooldown on some of Sith's delayed attacks? If you feel like answering any additional questions, I'm curious about Cerberus and Catherine (the latter of which almost seems like 'hidden top tier'). Cerberus is very obviously a strong character, he's got very good normals that complement each other, wide versatility with his built-in moveset and selectable specials/supers, and what look like pretty easy Exceed near-ToD comboes (though Rui's seem really braindead...). Is there anything I'm missing? As for Catherine, I'm a little unclear as to what his gameplan is. He's got pretty much every tool he needs (Bell summon, 'Bunnysuit tarzan' air-to-air, 'Devil stooompu' air-to-ground, and his schoolgirl command grab), and even a Genei-jin. It kind of looks like Catherine players just want to build meter and play their matchups by ear?
-
The overall balance isn't overwhelming, despite how silly the game can look at times. Can you explain some of the reasoning behind some of these matchups? It isn't too hard, matching up normals and tools side-by-side, to see why Bravo has such a hard time with Cthylla for example. But what gives Kagari an advantage over MG Hikaru but not regular Hikaru? Rui over Vein? And according to the JP community, what are the weaknesses of the bottom two (Hermes, Cait + Sith) that keep them from being stronger? It's apparent when watching videos that they struggle, but I don't understand in particular why Hermes is so bad.

[P4A] Naoto Shirogane - Gameplay Discussion "Ace Detective"
OutlawVinegar replied to ludwig van's topic in Archives
Hah, I appreciate the response, though I've been following P4U since the initial arcades, so I was kind of being facetious. -Imo, Yosuke and Labrys can't disrespect traps as freely as you think; by themselves, sure, they can j.C and j.B them easily, but doing so usually either leaves them open for bullets or takes some time, during which Naoto can set up 5D, more traps, or just go in for pressure or a punish. -Her health is low, but it isn't the lowest, and besides that it's only 300-500 lower than Yosuke, Yukiko, etc. I feel like everyone who is below 9k is a harder character to play well simply because an Awakened opponent is really capable of running the damage back with one good Fatal. -'No mixup' is nonsense, really. She has several ways of frame-trapping, a special overhead, decent lows, a quick crossup for 25 meter (not as good as Akihiko of course, but still), and options with meter like Double Fangs > OMC into double overheads, etc. It might seem 'weak' to you, but it's at least average above-average when you consider the mixup options available across the cast (Yukiko, Liz, and Mitsuru have worse mixup, Kanji, Lab/Slab, and Teddie (based on what items are out) have worse pressure). While the meter use is considered wasteful by most Naoto players on Dustloop as they'd prefer to save it for SMP, it feels like people don't actually respect the damage and options she has without it. Though I disagree with some of your opinions on the character, I'm splitting hairs here. I recognize she's a weaker character than the current top, and I wasn't trying to say otherwise. If anything, the fact that Narukami's 214s eat traps for free was what I was getting at in my last post. I know she's got it rough, I just seem to get outplayed by Naoto players a lot, so the differences in character strength don't feel pronounced. -
[P4A] Naoto Shirogane - Gameplay Discussion "Ace Detective"
OutlawVinegar replied to ludwig van's topic in Archives
Alright, thanks for that. I'm not sure how well I'll be able to adjust, but skimming the frame data and knowing the invul isn't immediate hopefully will help, as well as figuring out how to bait it. I kind of feel like being near the corner at all with Naoto is a losing proposition with this knowledge, though. 75 meter potentially leading to a total reversal/SMP? Why bother doing anything anywhere except midscreen with her? How is this a bad character again? I only can say this because I'm not playing Narukami, I guess. -
