  1. jacky is hard to recommend. i learned vf5 with jacky and while it's certainly possible, you're going to struggle a lot at first because you're going to be doing no damage (unless you learn his real ch smash upper combos right away) and you're not going to know how to poke with him without some practice. that being said, if you just watch some videos and figure out how to control space with him, you might be able to learn him pretty quickly. the basic idea is that at long range you want to either crouch dash and 66 K+G4 (the 4 is really important as it backturns you and puts you at + frames) or you want to crouch dash and 3K confirm in to a canned string. at mid range you want to mix up between 3K, 6P and 1P, and to catch evades you want to use either iaigeri (hold 6K then G cancel), 1P (confirm in to K) or 46 K+G (one of jacky's few full circular moves). of course there are other moves you can use in these situations (beat knuckle, 44K and a few others come to mind for catching evades) and there will be situations where you won't know what to do without some practice, but that's vf man. goh is easy to recommend because he will teach you how to do pretty much everything, especially what to do at disadvantage. akira will also teach you pretty much everything. brad and kage are a little too advanced for learning the game, i think. (this is all talking about vanilla 5, btw) that being said, you have an amazing resource if you're serious about learning this game. my scrubby ass will probably be practicing this game again very soon and i will without a doubt be consulting the vfdc wiki.
  2. honestly the hardest part is just getting used to the movement and footsies (yes, despite what seth killian wants you to believe there are actually footsies in 3d fighters and you can't just backdash all day! at least not in vf). parts of the game have been changed to be "beginner friendly" (like the removal of multiple throw escapes, which is honestly making the game harder in a way) but there has yet to be a system change i have found to be objectionable. this is shaping up to be the best vf ever. as for beginner characters, i can't say for sure atm because of how much the cast has evolved from vanilla 5. but typically speaking, grapplers like jeffry and wolf are good characters to learn with; and you really can't go wrong with akira, either. if you're practicing with vanilla 5 then goh and lau are good choices too.
  3. long story short vf was the first game that REALLY got people FUCKING PUMPED over in japan i mean like REALLY fucking pumped and vf2 was really hard too so people got hype when people did hard shit then vf3 happened and some people stopped playing but then vf4 happened and the game came back like nobody's business (it also introduced 3d custom girl to fighting games) and then vf5 came out and had to be revised a million times but it's FINALLY just where it needs to be
  4. i am actually a little surprised it took me this long to find out, but then again i haven't really been expecting it.

  6. time to show you bb kids what a real game's like
  7. i offered back in cs1 more than once but i guess people prefer jokes about characters being too strong and stuff. i honestly don't even think my commentary's that good but compared to what bb has right now... (and if you're worried about me "shitting on the game", i don't think i've done that once during commentary)
  8. just put a new pcb in your hrap. no reason to get rid of it really.
  9. they might be dead, but the johnny forums do still exist. also: http://gg.mizuumi.net/wiki/Johnny no tutorial videos man. search on youtube/nico for satou, suzume and jonio if you want matchvids. slayer is about even, bridget is 6-4, potemkin is almost 7-3, anji is even. johnny has no good matchups (except for arguably order sol) but most of his matchups are even or close to it. tbh you don't sound like you're at the point yet where you should be concerning yourself with specific matchups, rather with just learning your own character and reading up on the system.
  10. there's no problem with dustloop right now because it's grown to a point where it's still capable of sustaining this community. but you're talking about growth, which this place cannot accommodate much more of unless there's some changes. anyways i realized reading that post again that i muddled my own point (that's what happens when you have migraines for six months and can't even focus on a screen oh god kill me now) but here it is just in case you missed it: TAKE THIS GUY UP ON HIS OFFER. if you want gg/bb to grow, start letting the world know it. people obviously read the front page of srk no matter what the content is (i mean keits still has posting privileges there lol) so why not have them read something that isn't trash and is actually going to help the community you all claim to care about?
  11. this is something that people need to come to terms with; if this community is going to grow, it's not going to be because of dustloop. this place has already reached critical mass and there are simply not enough actually good/knowledgeable players here (on a regular basis) to help intermediate players (who are the most important asset of the fighting game community period). i actually think the best chance gg (and bb) has at growing is branching out to srk (hopefully there will be a REAL way to play gg online one of these days so there'll be a good excuse for a gg subforum there). there's a good number of people there who played gg back in the day/want to learn gg, but simply can't be assed to regularly check another forum (and given the state of dustloop these days, i can't blame them, either). personally, if ggac is ever on 360/PS3/GGPO2, i'll be doing everything i can to promote the game on srk. as for bb: i lost hope for the bb community once i saw the change in focus around the time cs came out. by that time most of the old hat gg players who came out to try the game were already tired of it and weren't coming back; and once cs hit consoles the floodgates were open and bb decidedly became a story mode game with a tournament scene. it's more than just a stigma, it's people who have no interest in learning the game/improving taking up space on a forum that frankly never should have catered to them in the first place. of course, it doesn't help that bb still isn't that great of a game, and likewise suffers from the same problem sf4 does of good players bashing it/not caring about it (and that IS a problem, like it or not). bb also suffers from other problems, including but not limited to the stigma against "anime games", which makes the uphill battle it faces that much more daunting. how do you make the community grow? you can start by not being so insular and acknowledging that it might be a good idea to talk about this game more on the single biggest fighting game forum on the internet. srk, for all of its problems, is the best chance any game has at getting big, ESPECIALLY today.
  12. pz is shady, news at 11. oh and i might be in town yet again BUT FOR REAL THIS TIME this month
  13. i like ae over super any day. i play cammy and even i'm glad tkcs is gone.

  16. and i know how dacidbro is going to respond: "but... it's a good game! people SHOULD play it! i'll MAKE people play it!" story of my life...
  17. yeah dude not to sound like a DICK but where were you in 2009 (admittedly i never put the time i thought i would in to the game but i knew i wasn't going to evo after a certain point so w/e) tbh you should just learn umvc3/kof since those will be at evo next year
  18. spark winning bb? SHOCKING almost wish i had bet on grand finals (sorry lord nigga)
  19. makes sense i guess. anyone with access to exvs who could tell me how tallgeese iii differs from tallgeese in next? that would be super sick.
  20. oh, and before i forget, someone knowledgeable tell me why gp03 isn't like A tier. it seems to me its only real flaw is that it has to reload for 6 seconds.
  21. this i disagree with. you need to know how to manage your boost from the get go, otherwise it's going to be very hard to adjust; the single most important aspect of this game is managing boost, and it's something you are going to have to learn whether you like it or not. better to learn it immediately and not have to adjust than to be constantly running out of boost and landing in a bad spot. everything else you said was more or less correct, but this is just wrong. alternatively, i think the best way to learn this game single player is to play H route (the random one) on one credit and keep doing so until you can clear it.
