Oddly enough. With sanwa buttons, if you blow on them hard enough, you can get an input. Also, if he has any complaints about the stick not being sensitive enough, switch to an LS-32, though, if you're used to those, like I am, you might find yourself dropping things on sanwa sticks, as the throw is a bit longer.

If you want background separation, I'd just go with any 70-200. Even at f/4 (which is what you were using anyways), if you're far enough back, there will be hardly any background visible. The problem with 1.4's is that you'll often get their eyes in focus, but their nose and ears won't be.
