I'm really having a hard time keeping her out. It seems like i never have time to pumpkin as she's always in my face. And I can't seem to punish her drive dash drill claw thing(dunno what its called). Any suggestions? By the way I'm new to 2D fighting games so bare with me if I sound a bit noobish.

This is what I pulled directly from the Matchups thread: I haven't fought a very experienced V-13 yet so I cant attest to any of that, but Rachel seems to have an awful time dealing with pressure -- i.e. Noel and Taokaka. You've got to be quite careful when you try to summon, and really only Lobelia if you know they're at the very least going to have to block it. You can argue just about any match with Rachel requires patience, just because her high-damage combos demand a lot of set-up. Have pumpkin, will travel, though. credit - Pewter Noel and Taokaka, I'm finding, are the 2 characters where the electric chair works really well. Haven't had too many problems with them after starting to use the chair more liberally. credit - MelloBoy Are there any lest risky options?

the # one thing I want for rachel, really, I want ragna or jin's 5A. But meh, my advice block low, watch for throws, you know the usual, but I just watch for her flip-over overhead attack and 2C it. The other overhead is a lot slower, but safter, FD it and you're out of pressure. But once you take away the flip overhead, a lot of tao's i've seen will just go all low's, throws, if you're smart about it, you can start doing j.2C3D out of their pressure strings seeing as how it hops lows, and beats throws. Beyond that though, I've had chair beaten by more of tao's moves than any other character, I don't advise just throwing it out randomly in pressure. That's just gonna get you punished more often than not. if she's in the air 6A, I don't really mind doing this randomly sometimes as its usually safe if they're in the air or i'll get a lucky counter hit. If she's on the ground, i block, if she's far away I'll use A ver. lobelia as it beats her dash, and low to the ground air dashes. I'll play really conservatively for this match-up until I know they're afraid of the counterhit. Once you get a pumpkin out, feel free to be really lenient with the wind, I'll blow 3-4 wind all at once just to tap this character seeing as it usually leads to frog combo. But generally tao seems to control the skies. On the reverse, seeing as how she's so damn good at movement, I've also spent 3-4 bars of wind just to get away. Tech - air dash 6D, 2D to the ground, then 4/7D to push away the tao that's chasing after my ass, then I can finally get a lobelia or a pumpkin out gotta run, might add more later

Thanks. Tao and Noel are the 2 chars I face most. My friends play them and I'm tired of getting rushed into oblivion. I'll test your suggestions tomorrow. I'm also starting to think I'm using the pumpkin wrong.. I rarely use it at all actually, so my issues are probably more than just this matchup.

2c owns Taokaka if used right. Learn the usual patterns and throw it out at safe moment, then put on the pressure with pumpkins, frogs and high/low mix ups. She might hit you a lot, but don't get discouraged because she goes down pretty easily.

I would suggest using 6a over chair if you're trying to predict one of her diving attacks from long range. Less recovery, less punishable. Things I have trouble dealing with are her fast and long range C attacks > drive > mixup/pressure (2a's, 5b's, flip overhead into cat spirit, and throws. I feel like you're literally required to IB certain attacks and punish into combos, since you can rarely create enough distance to summon things safely or zone her if you do.

B/C lobelia works wonders at a distance, because it'll most likely force tao to block it (because all tao players love hopping around in the air to get you with a JC counter-hit). If they block B/C lobelia, you have enough time to get out a pumpkin. If the tao is really close to you and in the air, you can occasionally throw out a A lobelia/rather than 6A because it can beat/trade with a lot of her pokes, which is nice. Don't backstep too often because you might eat a 6C for nasty damage. I find it that if I'm really in trouble with her pressure, I just try to IB->jump, because even if I get hit by some follow-up, I can usually tech in mid-air, and I have much better options than getting pressured on the ground. Jump->wind away from corner is also really useful in this match-up.

I've found 6A and 2C to be good at stopping dive attacks if timed well, as some have said. I don't find Tao as threatening as some of the cast, since blocking and the aforementioned motions beat out most of her game. I find Tao's the one who really has to work hard to get in, but maybe I have yet to play a good Tao. Just keep your distance, play patient, and let Tao come to you, and not the other way around. You don't want to run into one of her attacks, and get hit with a big combo. However, I just can't seem to counter that pounce super since it's a command throw. Tips?

It's hard to keep Tao out long enough to summon some defense. I like to try to score a knockdown with a Lobelia since she often moves in from the air. Just use wind to ensure you don't miss or at the very least, push her away from you. 6b seems to work for me well enough on the ground, until she gets baits it with the stupid crawl. The hardest part is getting the damn pumpkin out safely. After that, it's business as usual.

Some Taos will catch on to 2C very quickly and start baiting it. Thanks to the massive amount of recovery time, if you get baited or mistime it you're probably in for some punishment.

I just stick with 6A due to being safer on block/bait.

One thing I've noticed in this match-up is the Taokaka's will actually sit back and pick their shots to get in and combo you. They know Rachel is tough from mid range due to 6B counter-hit potential so they rush down when you open yourself up. I feel like if I try to advance towards them they'll rush in on me with her crazy mobility and and mix-up high, low and overheads until I turtle up and get thrown. Rachel kinda has to turtle up at times in this match-up because Tao has some really fast attacks (her low A spam) and you can't stick ANYTHING out without getting CH into a combo. That's why a Tao that looks for a lot of throws is real tough for me to beat... I seem to just eat them or tech but too early/late... The best tactic I have found is 6A and 2C (1C really cause I do it out of block...) as others have mentioned. Sit back and pressure with projectiles, pumpkin and frog if you have time to get them out. Tao is gonna have to come in at you so you should at least take a shot a 6A'ing her entry every time. You should hit her out of it a good amount, not every time, but enough to make it riskier for her. Once she's on top of you (and this work well for Noel as well) block low until you see the overhead coming or after you block the overhead (they have a longer recovery) and go for 2C right away. You have to do it as early as possible to make it into the auto-block frames before they are able to get another active frame on you and CH you. Break the pressure and try to return the favor. I don't think Noel or Tao deals with pressure any better than Rachel so put some on. A well played Rachel can really pour on the pressure too and if you catch them she does good damage. Gotta love Rachel :)

I see what your saying;however, I find 6A harder since its harder to time. Its hard to fight Taokaka in the air or ground, and 2C seems to be a good option. Its like what you said, they will will catch on, so then send pumpkins out to bait them.

I see this battle as being a get used to playing ms. speedy but I notice j.2c

helps too.

It's really easy to hit her during the pounce distortion or counter it with 2C if you don't feel like just ducking and using 2B. If you're going for a hit, lobelia and pumpkin both work. Lobelia is also a decent anti-air if you can guess which way they're coming from.

Taokaka can fake you out up close(her drive command where she whooshes past you and pops up from behind), so I've seen some avoid 6A if they guess when I'm going to use it, but they can't do that from a distance (or at least I haven't seen any fake out a lobelia).

This isn't a great match because I can't block or grab tech to save my life, but it's an easy example of how pumpkin can keep you pretty safe from the pounce distortion if you can wind on reaction. 2C will also block random hex super.

Also- Taokaka has terrible guard libra. If you get her in the corner, just continue to pressure her. It's very likely you'll guard break her for a free super or massive damage.

Make sure when you're getting pressured by Tao at any time, to just IB as much stuff as you can.

It's easily the best way to open up holes in her rushdown to get out.

Did you just spam the same comment on almost every Tao vs. (insert character here) thread in existence?

Although I would like to see the risks of attempting to IB every one of Tao's moves.

Hello Rachels, I main Tao, but im trying to pick up Rachel. so i figure i can offer some friendly advice. it's true Tao has a nasty pressure game, but she has one glaring weakness, her overhead. too many Rachels try to hit with a chair after it. itll work maaaaybe twice before any semi-intelligent tao punishes you mercilessly for it. the good news is that tao has NOTHING that clean combos from her 6c>236c. so any high priority attack should land (at minimum forcing a block) to buy you time. also look for long range advantage traps. sword iris and george can severely hinder tao's rushing game if baited properly. same with the distortion drive. im not a very good tao tbh. but even i can bait a chair and dodge a pumpkin w/ drive cancels. tao relies on up close pressure. wait for that rush and smack them for trying. just remember, if u miss 'Imma punish youuu!'

wat? No good Tao is going to do 6C > Cat Spirit 3 unless they hit confirm it, or as a once in a blue moon mixup since you can just jab Tao out of it. And on hit it has the cleanest combo afterwards (vertical drive loop).

Either l haven't found a good tao yet, or this is an easy matchup. Once l block her combo's, l got a perfect oppurtunity to chair.

You haven't fought a good Tao yet.
