Valentine Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Could we have a General Talk thread for posting about whatever? What anime you're watching, new games coming out, movie discussion, etc.?
Sazuja Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 that was kinda quick XD...Because of the reputation being a pro forum?
Hatred Edge Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 We've tried before. It didn't happen before and I doubt it'll happen now.
Chuchulachu Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 what about an introduction thread? That way newcomers won't feel like they're posting in the wrong place on their first post most of the time
shtkn Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 http://www.dustloop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4263 you're not hte first person to think we need a general discussion board (hint, it's not going to happen). what purpose does an introduction thread serve? to inflate post count? to announce to the forum 'HAY GUYS I AM NEW NOTICE MEEE'? seriously, i've never seen a point to those types of threads... can someone explain to me why there's a need for one?
Quomple Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 http://www.dustloop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4263 you're not hte first person to think we need a general discussion board (hint, it's not going to happen). what purpose does an introduction thread serve? to inflate post count? to announce to the forum 'HAY GUYS I AM NEW NOTICE MEEE'? seriously, i've never seen a point to those types of threads... can someone explain to me why there's a need for one? General Talk forum would: -eliminate the need to create 50 introduction threads -help members of the community get to know each other better (because I know I'm not the only one on here who doesn't know a single Dustloop member irl) -give us something to talk about other than video games (people actually do that) -help keep threads free from off topic posts (one thread had about 10 pages of nothing but talk about physics and college) -possibly bring some life to this forum? It has nothing to do with post count or being an attention whore. I know Dustloop likes its "forum for the pros" attitude but I think that's also why we're lacking in a lot of things other forums have not to mention the reason behind the small amount of traffic the site has been getting lately.
Kamui Moon Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 Match Finder already does all of that, though. it's there for intros, random talk, meeting each other, whatever.
shtkn Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 basically, i'm against a general talk forum because way back in the day (when dustloop didn't exist and it was gamecombos.com), there was a general watercooler subforum. that place turned to shit and it was a general hive of scum and villainy. if you want to shoot hte breeze, try: - other forums like srk, smash boards, somethingawful, 4chan, whatever - going into the irc chat room for guilty gear or srk or whatever another not mentioned fact is that spam posts eat up bandwith and memory for this site. this site (as far as i know) is tiny and doesn't have that much spare resources to support a general discussion forum. if you're using these forums as a way to make friends in real life, try the match finder section and go post in there and meet up with ppl near you.
Josh Ballard Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 every "general" discussion forum on the internet is like exactly the same and they're all terrible however, i would be all for one if i had trolling immunity
MisterBadguy Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 We already have one of these. It's called Blazblue General...
doragonkoroshi Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 -eliminate the need to create 50 introduction threads -help members of the community get to know each other better (because I know I'm not the only one on here who doesn't know a single Dustloop member irl) -give us something to talk about other than video games (people actually do that) -help keep threads free from off topic posts (one thread had about 10 pages of nothing but talk about physics and college) -possibly bring some life to this forum? -there is no need for introduction threads. just post up in match finder for your area. If there is no thread for your area, make one and ask if there's anybody 'round there. -go to tournaments. again, use match finder. talk to people on aim or something if you really want to, or pm them if you want to talk to them about something -plenty of other places you can do that. if you don't know us irl, then you probably don't know our taste in movies and can't trust our recommendations. also, has nothing to do with gg. if you want to know what other fighting gamers think of one movie or another, there's always srk. -srsly, there is no salvation from off-topic posts. it's just gonna happen. srk will let you make a thread for anything, and they're off-topic just as much as we are here. also, physics and college are important. stay in school. -life in this forum means nothing if it's not about our games. if traffic increases, but the same amount of people are playing gg, then there's really no real-world impact. but here's a funny experiment we could try. why not just make general dustloop threads on srk? "dustloop members movie discussion" or "dustloop members introduction thread." would be hilarious. (i think.)
Blade Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 We had a Watercooler back in the days of Gamecombos forums, a guy by the name of Psilocybe patrolled it.
Effenhoog Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 going into the irc chat room for guilty gear or srk or whatever What is the IRC channel for dustloop anyway? I remember there being one years ago but I can't seem to find it these days.
StardustStorm Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 The reason why BB general is looking like a shit hole is because we have no shit hole. :/ If you make us one, the number of stupid threads will probably go down in BB general. Also, isn't there a way to make some posts not count...? I know Animesuki has something like that...
Koozebanian Fazoob Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 If you feel the need to post shit then go somewhere. Don't post dumb shit on Dustloop. And yes you can make posts not count, but what's the point really? If people are really posting just to bump their post count they'll find themselves banned in a hurry.

I don't really feel the need to. But I'm sure others do. Why does it matter how many posts you have, anyway...?
Koozebanian Fazoob Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Some people feel that more posts = more better I guess. Actually that's the reason Post Count doesn't show up in the thread view anymore. Lot of people spamming posts just to bump post count back in the day.
Shinobi! Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 We've been successful without one. Don't know why we would start now. SRK fills my needs for a general discussion already.
ShinsoBEAM Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I don't really feel the need to. But I'm sure others do. Why does it matter how many posts you have, anyway...? The Three Ps of quality posting: POST, POST, and POST. Some people feel that more posts = more better I guess. Actually that's the reason Post Count doesn't show up in the thread view anymore. Lot of people spamming posts just to bump post count back in the day. Thats good, I also hate forums that give you like little titles based off the number of times you have posted it just tends to make more worthless posts.
Kayin Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 All you need to do is look at how bad SRK's general discussion is to see why we're better off without one. GD here would probably be almost as bad, if not worse.
Zinac Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Just look at the BlazBlue General Discussion forum and you'll know its a bad idea.
jenygs09 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Just look at the BlazBlue General Discussion forum and you'll know its a bad idea. I'm wondering if comparing data from one method would be valid when compared to the other.
