Hello everyone, just figured that I want to know if any of you are interested in some PSN ranbats for P4U.

I aim to make these ranbats to help players that do or do not like ranked matches, or better yet, want something to practice in anticipation for tournaments with P4U as a main event game. I have options available for the ranbats, I want some opinions or suggestions on them and what you think are best on what the general public will prefer.

NOTE: I hope to do the first one sometime before the end of the month, if successful, I hope to make them available every 2 weeks after each concluded ranbat. If you are interested, give your input and hopefully I can work something out.

1. Organization

I am going to use Challonge for the brackets, but for communication, I have two options available for the ranbats and one I will leave for suggestions. Descriptions are as follows:

  • PSN chat room - PSN has a feature where you can start chat rooms and organize casuals with the players involved. Results can be reported in through the chat room.
  • Dustloop - The forums will be where I will post the info about the ranbats, but it can take some time because you need a browser to access it. Results can be reported in through a PM to me or on the PSN chat room.
  • Other - Suggestions are welcome, but be sure to include where to send the results.

2. Time and Day

Self-explanitory. If you participate in the ranbats, what time and day would you prefer to be available on? (To prevent clashing with the XBL ranbats, Saturday would seem fine, but that's just me)

  • In your opinion, what will be the best day and time for the ranbats to be held? - Just to make sure, let me know what day and time you are available at. This will help me set up a valid date/time.

I live in the central coast of the US, splitting the ranbats into two timezone groups (CST/EST and PST/MST) can help sort out connections separately, but I need your opinions on how it should be handled.

3. Player registration numbers

This will be a ranbat, but in case the timezones are divided into two groups, a recommended number of players for it is always encouraged.

  • 8, 16, or 32 player (Tournament friendly) entry, but remove those that have dropped out. - This is obviously a fan favorite option, but the choice is up to you. If the ranbats are divided between CST/EST and PST/MST, then 32 player entry may have to be encouraged.
  • Save reservations for players that are interested.

4. Point Structure

I will keep score of the players participating through a spreadsheet on Google Docs.

Points for participation, plus bonus points for those who placed high in the ranbat rankings.

Points for participation, plus bonus points for whenever you advance a round.

5. Disconnection from the match

In the case of a disconnection...

Other notes:

[*]Netplay Lag - Let me know on whoever is lagging during your match. If I get enough complaints from that player on their opponent during the ranbat, I will temporarily suspend their entry until they fix their lag issue. While I don't like this option, a laggy player will never make things fun.

[*]Streaming - I currently lack the necessary equipment for streaming the matches, but if you want to volunteer, let me know.

[*]Character Lock - Yes, your character choice is locked within each tournament; but when the next one starts, you can change your character.

[*]You must register with your main PSN account - I will not encourage those who sign up with backups. If you signed up with the PSN provided, that will be the account you will use for the ranbats. No backup accounts are allowed when signing up.

Let me know whenever you are interested in a PSN ranbat series. I expect five answers before I can work something out. If you have any questions or concerns, don't be shy to ask.

Thanks for your time, and I hope we can have some fun PSN ranbats in the future!

[*]Forfeit the match - The ranbats will be best of 2 out of 3, so things will move smoothly.

[*]Forfeit the round - A rematch will have to be done, but it may slow things down.

[*]Rematch - May slow things down.

[x] Interest

I'm up for this

What is the best time to host it.

Honestly afternoon/night(In regards to the latest time-zone) is always better. Like 8-9PM EST would be pretty ideal for me honestly.

What time are you free?

Until I get school finance resolved 24/7. Though the ideal time for me is 7PM EST.

I'm down. I vote chat, Saturdays, evenings, however many people we can get, everything's made up and the points don't matter, forfeit the match, and booyah.

I would be interested. I can help run the WC portion if you need help.

PSN Chatrooms are relatively small in capacity and become crazy once enough people are talking in there, plus it's a pain to have to leave during matches. I'd recommend a browser-based IRC or similar chat instead.

Or someone like me could stream, and you could use the stream chat for reporting. I'd just avoid using the PSN chatrooms and using Dustloop isn't a terrible idea, but refreshing the page could get bothersome.

I think Friday nights would be the best time. Either that or Sunday nights. Perhaps Biweekly? A lot of people hold casuals and tournaments on Saturdays, so I would avoid that.

I'd say a min of 16; although 32 would be awesome, I don't think it would ever fill. If you go with 16, you really need reservations.

The second option for points seems the best. The first seems to be more biased at keeping high-ranked people high.

Given how unstable PSN can be at times, I vote for rematch on disconnect. There needs to be a limit to this though: two disconnects = forfeit. It might slow things down a tad, but I feel it's more fair. You might also want to cap how many disconnects you can have in a given day.

The PSN chat would be the ideal way to run things seeing how not everybody has access to a computer as they're playing on the PS3. You could use a poll to find out how many people have access to a computer and if there's more yays than nays, then you could just use an IRC. Still, the PS3 chat seems like the most practical way to run things.

As for the time, I'd say Sunday evening would be best for the same reasons that Jyo provided.

A 16-man tournament would be ideal. Hell, you might even have to tone it down to 8 players.

I'm still pretty new to PSN, so this would be the first time I've heard of such chatrooms. Sounds neat. Would we ever run into problems with some players not being able to connect to the chat, or is that a non-issue over PSN?

Also I echo kazukifafner's echo of Circuitous's post.

Weekend evenings would be my preferred time.

I could work something out if we do it biweekly, and Saturdays seem like a great time to start ranbats. As for the chat room, I have to agree with Jyosua on IRC, its annoying to leave the PSN chat when a match starts, so I will hopefully get an IRC channel for the ranbats up and running when available.

Thanks for the inputs on this, guys. Circ's post really must be a great option for all of us including myself.

The issue with using an IRC chat, is people now have to be able to be on their PS3 and computer at the same time. Not everyone has that "luxury" or setup. You also create the situation where the connection is being used on the computer as well, and even if IRC doesn't use up much bandwidth, who knows what is running in the background on people's computers. It's not a problem for people with amazing internet but still. It could also get confusing with names if people's names on IRC don't match up with their PSN ID / Dustloop name.

The issue with PS3 is that the chat has a limited number and the fact/myth that it could cause lag so people tend to leave before matches start as you mentioned. But it doesn't need people to be on both their PS3+computer at the same time.

Just thought I'd give my opinion as someone who has done these things before. Have fun.

I guess you have a point there. IRC can make things a bit complicated due to people needing to be on both their PS3 and computer at the same time. People on DL using different nicknames from their PSN ID and DL username can confuse people too, and Jyo, helping with the West Coast half of the ranbats will be appreciated as well. :)

Also, Saturday at 8:30 EST will be the start time of the first ranbat and Sundays at 8:00 EST for ranbats after that. I am going to start this on either September 29th or October 6th, but opinions on the date are welcome.

the worst part is that the limit is 16

which means if you are running a 16 man tournament (with no byes) then the host of the tourney will HAVE to play if he/she plans on staying in the chat, if you don't want to play then you'll have to have someone collect match results and shout rules for you since the chat will be full and you can't be taking a slot from another participant. The good news is that this should only be until people start getting eliminated and leaving the chat then you can just join and stay in the chat whether you are playing or not.

if you run a 32 then you'll have to make multiple chat rooms with you in all of them or have chatroom captains in each room, I did this with WoZ and Shin and it worked pretty well (me, WoZ and Shin and the people streaming/recording were also in a Skype chat so it was easier on us)

you should have no problems with an 8 man tourney.

an IRC is nice but since not everyone can be on their computer and PS3 at the same time you'll have a lot less people joining. Whereas running with PS3 chats will ensure that the people joining a PS3 tournament will have a PS3 to use the chatrooms lol
