I don't think we need a kiddy pool for online tournaments. I think the money attracting the attention of more serious players is what we need to produce inspiring play and content which will draw more people to the game.

If someone hears of LK winning tons of money on BB, they will perhaps think they too can have the chance and make it possible. The realistic chance of winning thing is just not really something that I see as necessary. There's still tons of people who enter evo for games like marvel and SF and I'm pretty sure most of them don't really think they'll win the whole thing, they enter anyways though, cause tourneys are fun and stuff.

As for the chipping in thing, I think asking the participants and just presenting it as an option would be the best way to do it. Lag is gonna make you salty weather you put money down or not. If we get enough people it should be like 5 bucks per person tops, it really wouldn't have that much of an additional negative effect I think.

as an option I can see it working but not as a mandatory thing

when making the tournament thread put up a donation button or something but don't make it mandatory, people will NOT care enough to pay for a netplay gamble

For tournies, you might want to have a league set up so only people in the league can enter so they have to work their way up and commit to playing. That way you don't just have someone beast like LK or someone show up out of nowhere, auto win the money and leave every time. Nothing against LK, but if you want to motivate people who don't play as much to play, they have to feel like they have a realistic chance to win something, right? So then you might want to divide things up into several groups or leagues of people based on skill level.

Or just let anyone join, I dunno. Just trying to think what would make a prize most attractive.

You are absolutely right, the last thing I want to do is beef up LK or SKD's pocket so they can buy fucking sports cars and Armani suits. And those guys are untouchable currently - no dickriding, just facts. Banning someone from a tourney doesn't appeal to me much though, but neither does setting up a kiddy-league. I think what Hellknight suggested sounds reasonable, or maybe we can make a rule where you can't win money two weeks in a row or something.

We should hammer out the details, and I appreciate everyone's input on this. Once again, due to the limitations of netplay, my immediate goal would be to get a EST-Northeast league started, but I'm sure many others will like the idea also.

I agree plus we could should try to include everyone.

If new players or less confident players need help they can always ask a veteran after they play help to build up their confidence/skill level. That's why I say we should stream it if possible. I watched my own footage of me getting blown up on the persona ranbats or BB matches to help improve myself. It should work for everyone else too.

well I don't know what you're going to end up doing but I know when CP comes around I'll be running netplay ranbats again (as long as the netcode is good), if you want when the time comes, we can team up and add some of the things you're brainstorming currently

if you do end up doing something for Extend I'll be keeping watch for sure, I don't know about actually participating because lolextend

if this is a prelude to an upcoming netplay tournament then you can sign me up early.

If you guys are trying to get more people interested in netplay tournaments, then there needs to be more advertising than what we currently have for our tournaments. We have multiple websites and programs that people use for communication that we could be spreading information through. (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Skype, etc.) There's also other fighting game forums that we should be advertising our tournaments on (Shoryuken, Test Your Might, 8WayRun, Tekken Zaibatsu, Event Hubs all have BB forums/threads IIRC) to get more people interested.

I've been watching our netplay tournaments since they started, and the only advertising I ever see is the single thread here on DL and the stream advertisement on the front page. We have numerous members here on DL that can create quality ads (Both video and image based) for us to use across these websites. Not only will this encourage more players to join these tournaments, it will also help to bring in new BB players from different communities.

I would certainly like to advertise, but perhaps I should get comfortable with running tournaments first. My enthusiasm precedes my actual competence in the matter at the moment.

A quick update, I'm setting up a paypal account atm, just testing for now.

edit: fuck the code failed me. -_-

Setting up the donation button... I suppose it's gotta be embedded in the website, not in a forum like this. For the future reference, a paypal account w/ the address BBnetplayleague@gmail.com has been set up.

Success? I dunno. Just testing guys.

now you can put this at the top of the tournament thread, and when the day of the tourney comes you can count up all the donations and use them for the prize or save them for another tournament when there aren't many donations

It sounds a very great idea. still about the voice/chat group, is it vent/skype or Team speak?

Well, it depends who you are trying to bring in. I feel like if it's competitive players we're talking about, they would already be involved as it is. If you're looking at bringing in more casual players, they get discouraged much more easily. I can already see them being all "what's the point" and the Mortons will pour.

Basically, imagine an army of Star Demons.

I wouldn't mind, all that salt would be useful for the roads here.

It's annoying but I have a great capture card ready to go but I lost the drivers/software for it in a PC reformat and I lost the CD that came with it when I moved. I can't find the stuff online either. If I got it operational again I could record and possibly stream.

Great, so let me pronounce my agenda so we can put everything in action.

1. BBNetplayLeague Tournament #1 is a go. Date TBD (expect at least 1 1/2 week notice) A separate signup will be posted, and will be open for EST Players (perferably Northeast)

a. Donations accepted and counted towards Prize Money

b. I'll be donating $20 per tournament

c. Frequency/ Other details will follow

d. I'd like input from past tourney organizers, as I'm a total noob at this - If you'd like to help out, I'd be grateful.

2. I would like to test drive streaming - Thank you Bibi and XDest for volunteering. I will be PM'ing you guys this week to schedule some streaming sessions.

3. At least for the said test drive, I'd like to be on Skype with the streamers and other interested folks. If people are interested, I'd like HK to create a dustloop skype channel.

a. Skype or any form of voice chat other than PSN will help sustain a community. I used Ventrilo during my WoW days, and it worked then. No reason it shouldn't because of genre difference, but the result remains to be determined.

4. Commentaries/ Other contents will follow, but I'm at the mercy of those who have equipments already.

5. I would like to keep this thread open to gather feedback and more ideas.

Doesn't streaming slow down the match? That's what I was wondering earlier.

What Bibi said is that if the streaming is done by a third-party not actually in a match, it should be fine. But I'd like to test it before the tournament.

Posted

It definitely would if the one streaming was actually playing. The rooms I've spectated in and streamed didn't seem to be a problem.

The problem is if the streamer is lagging, thus gets a poor connection the match (even though the match is fine, the streamer spectates the match with some freezes/slow-down etc.)

Then your video will record the stutters and such and broadcast those. It doesn't affect the match, but it can affect the quality of the stream. That's why some people take so long to "exit out" of the after-game menu even when they're not playing. It's because they have a poor conn to the match and they are actually still watching the match.

Obviously it would bring the steam to a grinding halt if it got bad enough that the streamer got the "Your connection quality is too poor to continue viewing this match." thing.

I can help you with the tournament if you want, but if you need me to participate then that's a no-go for me unless you REALLY need me to play

also for those of you interested in the DL Skype chat, send me your Skype username and I'll add you to my contact list and I'll start making the chatroom later since I'm going to bed now

I've always been happy to commentate matches in pretty much every game I've played competitively. GameFAQs has made use of me and were satisfied. :)

If anyone wants someone to either make things entertaining or to just have an outside voice for their matches just ask.
