RichyGaming Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 I hope this is where we post these kinds of threads, because I'm new to Dustloop too xD Hey what's up guys. My username is RichyGaming and before I get started on the topic, I love fighting games. I have been specifically playing the BlazBlue series (Actually, the most fun game I ever played in my life) and some of Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus. So I suppose I consider myself a newbie since I played very minimal fighting games. I feel confident in my skills, so I stopped playing offline and started playing these few games on consoles to have online matches. I consider myself okay since I get on peoples good side and get respect from my Bang. But now I figured I should try joining tournaments, people say it's a place to have a good time if you love fighting games. I want to meet new people who like playing what I play =D But the problem is, it sounds pretty intimidating. I'm COMPLETELY new to this kind of thing. I can imagine myself walking in, but having no idea what i'm suppose to do when I get there (If I wasn't confused on how to sign up for the Tournament..). What happens next? Once it's my turn to start playing, when do I know I need to get out of the seat for the next player to go in? Are there any specific rules for tournaments in general? If I were to lose a game, I'll suck it up and say "Good match, bro" but what if something else happens, like random people getting on my case? I have seen some people arguing with Hosts and players after the match. My knowledge for tournaments on ANYTHING is 0%. If there's anything I know, it's to play the game and don't be a douchebag, have fun. I also understand we're suppose to have a good time. But I do know that if I go to a tournament right now, i'll feel so lost. Also, this probably sounds very stupid. But since I play on a Playstation 3 (And vita), how am I suppose to know if a tournament says what system they're going to have the tournament on? Does it say so on the rules? I don't know if I'll be playing as good if it's on a console i'm not used to. So I'm hoping someone can fill me in on this stuff. Because when a certain game comes out early 2014, I definitely want to start joining tournaments.. please and thanks bros!
shtkn Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 most of your questions can be answered by common sense... where is info on the tournament posted? likely on dustloop's events section or on their website. they hsould include start times, signup times, console versions, and rules. read them. most major tournaments require signups days or weeks in advance of the tournament. for locals, you should be able to sign up the day of. if they're missing some info, ask them! when should you get out of your seat? after you're done with your match since others need to play their matches too! what if your opponent starts acting unsportsman-like? take the high ground, behave responsibly, and talk to the guys in charge as for hecklers in the crowd... you cna't do anything about that, just deal with it and grow a tough skin or wear headphones or whatever. you can't control their behavior but if it truly does get bad, then talk to the hecklers and to the ppl in charge. really though, just use common sense and standard interpersonal skills and you should be fine
Rhiya Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 If there's anything I know, it's to play the game and don't be a douchebag, have fun. You're gold. Seriously. Don't worry about any of the other crazy shit -- if this is the only rule you follow, you'll be fine. As per the other stuff: Most majors these days have online preregistration. When you show up, you'll generally get in a line for people who've preregistered (and please, for the sake of the TOs, preregister), get your stuff, and then just have some fun playing casuals, etc. When the tournament starts, just be where your TO/pool handler wants you to be, and be there on time, then play your match, then don't stay on the setup if it's still needed. Consoles are listed somewhere in the rules or tournament announcements, yeah. Going to a tournament is an amazing experience, because it's rare to be surrounded by so many people with the same hobby, and it's doubly rare to get the opportunity to play good players from around the country, then just hang out with whoever you run into. It's just really fun.

I guess I shouldn't be too worked up about the crowds. My biggest issue was what to do after the match. I dunno if I have to play another whole game with the person like if whoever wins 2 or 3 times can go up against the next person or something. Or where I should go when I do leave. But I guess those are the kinds of things you find in the rules and stuff haha. Also, I might have an idea but what's a TO and pool handler?
mAc Chaos Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 also make sure to shower and use deodorant
Airk Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 The real simple gist of playing and being in matches is this: There will be someone coordinating matches. You'll probably hear them yelling something that sounds ridiculous like "I need KH2Sora and SomeKitty on station 3!" Keep an eye and two ears on that person. This person is the aforementioned "Pool Handler" who may or may not be the same person as the "TO" (Tournament Organizer). They will tell you when you need to go play and when. (There might be a couple of these people, but the basic idea is simple - keep your ears open for someone yelling your "name"). Go where you are told (If you don't know where station 3 is, ask the person telling you to go there.). Sit down. Plug in your controller. Set your buttons (do this on character select, dangit). Shake hands. Pick your character. Play your match. Shake hands again. Stand up, and clear the station. Someone else will most likely be playing there next, regardless of who won or lost your match. You only get permission to stop paying attention when you're knocked out of the tournament.
RichyGaming Posted September 17, 2013 Author Posted September 17, 2013 Thanks for clearing that up. And wow that sucks, my name is going to be KH2Sora_ in all tournaments >.>
skd Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 dont leave immediately after you lose lol, we had that happen once and it was like "oh". even funnier because it was a double elim tournament and the person left after being sent to losers bracket. just hang around if youve got the time, play casuals etc dont worry about your name, my tag is superkawaiidesu. SUPER. KAWAII. DESU.
RichyGaming Posted September 17, 2013 Author Posted September 17, 2013 Nope, your name sounds more original, mines is worse xD (Might have went with PenguinzReloaded) But yeah, I will probably hang around and play casuals, assuming that means matches just for fun. Because I LOVE BlazBlue :D If it's win or lose, I'm satisfied because there's no lag. So no excuses, ya know? And I guess I'll try not to rage quit, lol.
Antiquarian Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 dont worry about your name, my tag is superkawaiidesu. SUPER. KAWAII. DESU. Haha yeah, your handle really isn't something to worry about. I have yet to go to a tournament where mine was spelled or announced correctly, shit happens.
Celerity Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 You can sign up as whatever you want, it doesn't have to be your PSN tag or whatever. I sign up under all sorts of trolly names.

Circuitous Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Please for the love of god sign up as a name people recognize you as. Having to shout over a crowd of people for some bullshit name no one's heard of is obnoxious and wastes time.
