Maybe it's because there's no frame data, or maybe it's because I don't know any matchups yet, but it seems like everyone I play against can just dash up and mash buttons and I can't do anything to challenge that. I play Gordeau btw, for now at least. If I get knocked down, even when I get up and my opponent isn't up close if they dash forward they always beat my buttons. Idk if it's because Gordeau's normals are terrible, or if I'm just not playing the game correctly. In the neutral I've had several players, Linnes, Byakuyas, Nanases, Akatsukis, etc all randomly dash up and press buttons, and even if I press something before my opponent's normal comes out I get beat. Are you supposed to just sit there and block everything and let your opponent just do all their offensive bullshit till you get a chance to breathe? Can Gordeau do anything vs buttonmashers like that? Can he combat pressure at all. I feel everyone's just jumping at me and rushing me down for free. Nobody has any respect in this game, they just go in at full throttle and press buttons until they get a hit for that bnb. I try 5C to fish for a confirm but that rarely works, I try Gordeau's dp but it gets stuffed every time, and I've tried 2C to anti air but it gets stuffed too. I'm probably playing this game totally wrong, but if I need someone to tell me what I'm doing wrong so I can see what I'm doing. Besides a basic grasp of the game's system and a few bnbs I don't know anything about this game, and there's hardly any info out there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm generally decent at every fighter I play and this the first fighter where I feel like a complete noob.

In every game, you have to let the other guy finish their offense before you can start your own. Gordeau has ridiculous reach and the ability to easy confirm pretty much any hit into 3k+ damage and oki. As for reversal, 214C and 623C are both really really good reversals. They're probably the top two reversals in the game. His 623A and B aren't reversals. His 2C is 8f for the first hit, which is ridiculously fast (Hilda's 5A is 8f) since the second hit is huge and beats any jump ins if timed and spaced decently. 5C is huge, but it's slow. Don't use it if they're in your face. Use 5A, a reversal, or just block. You can beat the majority of players right now by just mashing his 236s at mid range 'cause half the cast has no easy answer to it outside of a hard read.

My problem is that I don't know when my opponent's offense ends. After playing a long set with a Byakuya earlier today I had to find out through trial and error the unsafe stuff he was doing, and that was after like 20 losses. Once I figured him I started winning, but it's just frustrating when you know your opponent has gotta be doing SOMETHING unsafe but you have no idea what because everything they do seems safe, because if you try to press anything you get. I'm used to playing Mitsuru in P4A where your opponent has to respect your pokes, in USF4 I play Rose and Chun, and I make my opponent respect their pokes as well. I like playing characters that allow me to make my opponent respect me. I guess this game isn't like that. Just gotta hold the blockstrings and wait till it's your turn. Gonna have to really change my fighting game mentality for this game.

It's easy to continue pressure in this game, but there really isn't much in terms of mixups. Very few characters have scary mixups since overheads are generally really slow and throw break windows are fairly long (not to mention everyone except Akatsuki having a throw break OS). Just block for a long time. Who cares, they're giving you free GRD and free meter.

For the future, though, you'll need to know the matchups and what each character can do. You have to have different mentalities for fighting against different characters. If you're against Carmine, you can read a wheel and mash before it comes out. If you're fighting an Eltnum, you should just sit there and respect it ('cause it's all a frametrap) until she pushes herself out and jump between 5CC if they try it. Or reversal.

Meatys are extremely good in this game, if you try to press a button to get out of pressure, you will get blown up for it essentially every time.

As a Gordeau player as well, your only two reversals are 623C and 214C. Normal Grim Reaper is not a real reversal and will get beat out almost every time.

When you're on defense you either block until your opening comes, or you try to guess with one of your reversals (Air = EX Grim Reaper, Ground = EX Assimilation).

It takes some time, but you'll eventually learn what stuff is safe and what is not, and where the opening is for each of the characters.

Also remember that you can shield to recover faster, as well as push your opponent away so that they can't do their full blockstring.

Wake-up blocking, and just wait for them to redo their string. After a few times, you should start to be able to see when their string ends and begins, and try to attack once the string ends, as that's your chance to get out.

Also, try playing Orie, she has the kind of thrust game plan where you control the mid-range with your pokes and get people scared of the thrusts.

Characters like Linne, Nanase and Akatsuki should not, under any circumstance, be able to just dash up to you for free and push buttons. Gordeau's range and damage from that range is scary.

People do respect options, but you have to make them scared of it first.

Well, maybe Linne. She is a quick little bugger. But her dash is nothing a good mortal slide won't stop if she's just yoloing fullscreen.

Gordeau does not have bad buttons for the most part I think you are still just trying to get use to the game I main Linne, so I can tell you how little opportunity I get to run up pressure a Gordeau. In this game there are things you need to get use, one is shielding pressure to make sure to give you breathing room. All mixups are predictable for the most part for most charc. If they are in the air block high and if they go low block low, crossups for the most part are non existent in this game. If they are running towards you try to Oki, by using a moves with a large range to keep them away I think Gordeau 236A or B should do. Remember that assaults (air dashes) are all unsafe and they cannot block during that time. If you have time to react moves with a lot of range will do the work for you. Overall you will just get use to this game eventually :)

After taking all you guys advice and hitting the lab I've been winning more matches and steadily leveling up my Gordeau. I'm starting to discover things that my opponents have been getting away with on me that are unsafe or I just figured out how to block them. It's fun exposing people using the same unsafe tactics on me that I didn't know how to deal with before :D Thanks again for all the advice.

Whaaaat Gordeau has some of the best normals in the game. o_O

I was like that too. But I realized that defense is very important in this game (other FGs too but this game especially). You can't go ham on somebody the minute you get knocked down. You have to wakeup block, and then go on the offense when their offense finishes.

The game takes time getting used to, trust me. I'm still getting used to it but my Gordeau is steadily improving.

This game is VERY match-ups heavy in a lot of cases. The way I play Carmine against Merkava is nothing like the way I play Carmine against Hyde. You really gotta know when you can press buttons, which just comes from experience.

I'm having a hard time with the game too. I'm used to Persona & BB, but I'm totally befuddled here. Some good advice here I'll try out. I'm guessing it's lack of patience on my part. I go to training and feel pretty good, then go to VS. and get bodied by the AI. Womp Womp LOL. I definitely like the game, but I want to love it.

People are super impatient. Just block. It's not as if blocking for 10 seconds if gonna kill you.

without seeing what you're doing it's hard to give specific advice. What I can say is the big thing I see a lot of new players (or players who don't know a matchup) do is try to mash or counter poke out of every block string. This game is all about blocking, like mentioned above.

Your location says you're in Philly, if you want to get games in offline and get advice/experience definitely feel free to check out the Philly thread in the Match Finder subforum, we'd be more than happy to help you!

Blocking is really, really, really good in this game. Overheads are slow, shielding is strong, and there's nothing stopping you from blocking for eternity.

Except there's grabs, but then again there's OSs for that lol. :eng101:

I think I have a little better understanding of the game now. Basically no "jump and dash" to get in like typical ASW games, block early and often, pay attention to GRD, try to get Vorpal, and try not to get shield broken. I only putzed around drunkenly with Melty for the first time over the summer, so this is way new to me.

Thanks for the vid Keech, it led me to this one which I think explained the basics more concisely.

Yeah, sounds about right. Despite the aesthetic, this is a ground game, and more like SF with half-screen normals than BB or GG
