We can't go with Tad because of school, and we realised it's unlikely Vocal can take us. I didn't want to say anything cos I thought it might sound like a guilt trip. There's always next year. -

Well you could go with Tad. Neither Star nor myself will be going. -

Hopefully Vocal can take us, but if not Star and I will need to catch a ride along with Naimat, if that's cool. Glad you get to go, regardless. So the Dolls is something else entirely? -

Hmm.. Not sure if it's possible for us anymore; only reason we could afford to go was Tads housing hookup. At least, that's my situation and I'm pretty sure it's the same for Star. Didn't we agree to still run April's tourney? At least that way I still have something to train for. -

Yosuke all day. Actually playing Persona 3 now. Never really liked the whole turn based rpg style, but Persona pulls it off with swag. -

Jackie and I are serious, for one. Im picking up stick so I dont have to worry about platforms. But this isn't just about BB. Its the scene as whole. The extent of help I received picking up KoF was "dont rely on 50/50s" and that sometimes the best option is to not move at all. As Leona, this is the best way to die. Hard. But honestly thats just KoF. -

I would say these things in person but what am I supposed to suggest? I don't know enough about any of my games to know exactly what I should be working on, so all I do is get as much experience as possible. All I know is that I've seen the best players coming from scenes that are cohesive and supportive, and they constantly push each other to exceed their limits. Look at Japan, for instance. Their country is relatively small, so the top players are either in your local arcade or a short train ride away. If I'm coming off as dramatic, it's unintentional. I just can't help but get riled up over things like this. It's who I am. -

I get where you're coming from, Jackie. I never meant that the community was just a tool for improving, I just figured that was universally an integral part of having a scene for competitive games. I thought of the two as going hand in hand; a scene grows together not only as fighters, but friends. I guess my view point is a lot further off than I realized, but I believed that becoming competitive and gaining an edge in games we all enjoyed was part of the fun. It's not about stomping other people to the ground or worrying about w/l ratios, it's about those thrilling battles we have as we clash time and time again, sharpening our skills as a community. It's about developing awesome tech and sharing it with your friends, about those long-running rivalries that culminate in a hype ass match mid-tourney. Maybe I was wrong. Naimat, that should really only be a problem in the event that certain people can't handle that top players will emerge in a competitive atmosphere. As long as a scene isn't full of immature, salty mofo's, that really shouldn't happen. -

The problem being that a lot of us don't have that option as I stated before. We're too spread out to meet regularly, so naturally one would assume the meat of community input for improving one's game would then come as a result of net play or forum discussion. The situation is only similar in that they joke around, which any group of friends naturally would. They have less need of the forums than a scene that really only meets once a month. I never said I was against talking about things for only a day or two, I was talking about leaving a discussion half finished. When it's one of the only options we have as a scene, forum discussion beats stagnation. -

The experience and skill they used to take those places didn't materialize from the aether. . . Some people are naturally talented, and there are various factors at play. They could have experienced other scenes, had frequent sessions with a reliably knowledgeable training partner, or even had someone mentor them. Even then, this avoids the point. Individual progress is not scene progress. Also, note that the only person regularly from our scene that you mentioned is Astaroth. -

Interesting. . . My thoughts were just wandering, and that led to me pondering on where others' thoughts took them. I think what Star is getting at is that we don't have the feel of a progressive community. We shoot the shit well enough, but our discussions tend to lack depth, and they don't captivate anyone's attention for more than a few days at most. An issue is hotly debated, then dropped before it's been fully examined. We've the "most active" scene thread, yet more often than not what we're active in has little to do with the games we play. We talk about what we want to play, what looks cool, etc., but mostly we just joke around. There's no sharing of information, no comparing play styles or discussing tactics, and seemingly no drive to improve as a group. We have that individual drive, but a lot of us have no means to truly put that motivation to good use. We're either too busy with school and/or work, and most of us are too far apart to meet up regularly, which is part of why we're so active online. I've noticed other scenes are posting so little because they're always at one of the members' houses getting games in, and when they do post it's about some tech they're trying to master or some match up they need more experience with in between the jokes and small talk. Then there are scenes like ours in terms of having a spread out population, but even then their concern is with upping their game as a whole. There are members constantly ready to buff up someone's match-up experience or give a tip on how to deal with this or that. I'm not trying to rag on anyone, but on the whole the few bits of advice I've received have been vague and unhelpful, or otherwise basic tips that I'd find out through experience/ have found out, but haven't gotten around to implementing yet. We're limited by various factors beyond our control, but I can't help but feel frustrated when it seems like I'm one of the few people who isn't content with our set up. I know I can't expect someone to come up with answers I can't even think of, but at least we can try to compensate somehow. As for the social thing, I get that feeling too. Sometimes it feels like we're divided into impenetrable cliques. I try to talk to people more, but I'm a paranoid, socially retarded introvert. I don't expect everyone else to make up for my deficiencies, but that's just how I am. Even so, this is our scene, and I think we can make something more out of it. League of cyber athletes gogogo. -

LoL events typically have corporate sponsors and the competitors receive payouts as well as gear and hardware. 3rd place in the weekend tournaments get about 5,000. I guess I'm just being wistful and fighters will always be the red-headed step-child of the pro gaming community.
