[Xrd] News & (Theoretical) Gameplay Discussion
Hecatom replied to Shinjin's topic in Guilty Gear General
I am talking about removing characters for stupid shit like "keeping the game fresh". If they can't add all the chars due time/cost constraints so be it, otherwise it will be a stupid move of from their part. You thik that Dizzy, one of the most popular characters is fine to be absent?, lol, yeah right. Kliff an Justice are very probable to be absent, but ABA? if is just because lolstory... -

I just want to be sure, FRC's are not random execution barriers, they are difficult because the nature of the mechanic an the intended behaviour of what happens after you successfully perform one -

Actually my fear in reallity is that they end taking away options without compensating for the loss. For example, if they remove the FRC's but instead make them forcebreaks i wouldn't mind, though it still can have an impact on how the game is played. Another thing is that GG is a fine tuned game where every mechanic was added with a lot of thought behind them, outside stuff like the slashback and the forcebreaks all the others have a huge role on how GG is played and how it flows, removing one of them could potentially change the game and as i said before, for the worse, and no one here wants that. This actually made me think about something, Ky lost a normal with good reach if the one of the trailer ends replacing it, not to mention that we don't know if they will change how the dust attack behaves -

Wrong, what people are affraid is to lost tools that make GG what it is, a game that gives the players characters with great tools to use as they please. The FRC is only an example, since is a great tool that helps the chracters have more options for mixups, pressure, makes move safe, etc and losing something like that could certainly change the game, and the fear is that it could be for the worse. No one here has said that execution = depth, on the contrary, i think that many here are on the page that more options = depth, and tools like FRC give that, more options that enrich the strategies. One more thing, keep in mind that execution is a valid way to balance the risk reward ratio, and as it has been explained the FRC's are "difficult" due the nature of the mechanic and the effectiveness intended for each move that is cancelled. If anything what people has said about execution, is that GG rewards the players who take its time to learn it, since it gives them an array of options to use, and that they don't want to lose that. Not that they want to keep everything difficult just because. Edit I want to add, as has been discussed many times on SRK, execution barriers will always appear sooner or later, MVC2 was seem at the beginning of its life time as a dumbed down game, and now it has shit like ROM and Fly Unfly combos. The same is happening with UMVC3, where many people thought that it was only ABC S, BBC S, relaunch BBC S, Super, and now there are more complex stuff that is difficult to perform without practice. IMO the difference is that GG tries to have more control on how the game will evolve, by leaving less stuff to the chance Also execution is a huge part of the strategy, for example, if ou can't do the 100% stun combos of makoto on 3s consistently, you don't make your whole stratey around that combo. -

Yeah because removing characters with huge different move sets just for not being stangnant with the same faces would be a bright idea. -

I think that you missed my point, the general market cares about a fun game nothing more nothing lesss, how much is this for them is quite subjective, but by giving them different options of modes and gameplay style, + solid ways to teach how the game works is a good start. There is HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE misconception that a casual can't have fun with games like GG because is "so much complex". I have a ton of friends that enjoy playing the game, and belive me, many of them know shit about the game, but they still enjoy it because it has a lot of cool stuff to do that is easy to do; They fucking love playing the game, and is one of their favorites, sure you could say that they are not playing it to the full potential, but they have fun with it, they are happy like that and they will sure buy Xrd when it drops, it wouldn't matter if is the most complicated game ever, like it doesn't matter now. More of this misconception comes from what we saw from 2009 onwards, online play has been a blessing and a curse at the same time, because now while we have access to more people playing the game, now we face more people that are better than us. Add stuff like youtube and streams where people is able to find high level play, and see cool shit and when they try to replicate it learn that it takes time, now it seems that everyone thinks that you need to emulate everything done at high level to have fun with the games. Add another misconception that GG is a hard game to play, actually is not. The game has a lot of stuff that is easy to do, you have chains and gatlings that make it easier to combo, almost every normal is special cancelable. Yes the game has a good amount of stuff to learn about, but if the mechanics are taught in a simple way but clearly, the player wouldn't be overhelmed. I totally agree that there are ways to refine some areas to make it more accessible. But i also think that adding a lot of interesting features can help. After all, what many people hate in reallity is losing. That is why i say that adding stuff like the heralds vs heroes mode can be interesting. We know for sure that GG would end with some similar features like BB, they already toyed with stuff like that, add an online mode where they can modify some stats of their character and use it to play against other people. I am pretty sure that something like that would help to attract more players than removing mechanics that many of them are not even aware that exist. I think that Spirit Juice got the idea of a good aproach, by adding an input buffer like BB of 5f a FRC window of 1 frame become 6 frames, making it easier to land without changing the core concept of the mechanic. That alone makes the game more accesible imo. -

A little late on this one. I don't know man, outside few little stuff like the jump install (or balance but all we know about that) everything on GG has been deliberated. Dunno how, i am more abrassive, and never talk about waifus or shit like that. That is something of what i like about their lineup right now, they have different games that are similar but at the same time offer different things to the players, not only on difficulty but style on gameplay while retaining that flavour. -

I agree with your points, but i believe that the fear of many people at the thought of the game being simplified is not necesarily an elitism thing. One of the great things of GG is the great room of exploration and versatility of the characters, and all of this comes from the great tool set that they have access from their on moveset to the universal options that all of them share. This includes stuff like the FRC's for example, this open options not only for combos, but for mixups, maneuverability, make some moves more safe, in other words it expands the array of stuff that you can use in your strategy increasing the depth of the game. The fear is that GG in order to attract "casual" players ends removing elements that made it the great game that it is in the first place, that imo, is a valid concern. -

Elvenshadow Dumbing down or taking out options doesn't assure that it will appeal to them and more importantly it can hurt the reception of the current fan base. You want to appeal to them? Make a fun game, make a game that teach them how to play the game. Also, there are enough options on the market that are simple enough, not every game needs to treat the players as retards and/or idiots, just make sure that they can learn how to play it, also give them alternatives of playstyles and modes, like the heros and heralds, give them stuff to do, you can always have the regular way to play for the serious players, but give the more casual crowd something like a semi rpg style of game, where they can max stats and compete online with ther custom characters. Hell, now that is 3d they could add something like the scramble mode of GG Isuka and expand it as an online mode too. They can also give online training mode, where people can have rooms for players, so you can have people teaching others how to play in a one to one setting. There are better ways to try to attract the mythical casual gamer Also, the difficulty on the FRC doesn't comes for them trying to make a difficult mechanic to master, but the whole concept of the mechanic. You are cancelling the moves between frames could it be startup, active or recovery frames, this actually limits the amount of frames that you can give of window to cancel them For example if they want you to use a frc for mixup purpose, they could put it on the startup frames just before the attack becomes active so your opponent wouldnt be on hit/blockstun so you can throw them, also remember that on GG your character keeps the momentum of the move, so it could be possible that cancelling the moves some frames later could change the outcome. Not to mention that they still need to balance the risk reward ratio, and making some stuff difficult to achive is more than just adding arbitrary difficulty. SpiritJuice had a good idea on how t make it easier without changing the whole mehcanic, give a 5 frame input buffer a la BB and your 1 fram frcs become 6 frames frcs. Perhaps make some FRC's Forcebreaks, who knows, but not remove the mechanic entirely. True, saying that this is an issue only of the GG or Air dashes games is plain dumb -

Or even better a new character that is Full Gear Sol You mean like removing FRC's or Slashbacks? Because those were some of his ideas >:/ El problema es que por lo que dijo Elvenshadow pachi quiere atraer nuevo publico simplificando GG -

Arakune was nerfed after a year more or less, Deathstroke is being nerfer after what? 3 weeks? Also, Deathstroke is being nerfed because people can't walk and block, and fall for the most basic form of zoning, there is a huge difference. Actually there is, and Deathstroke is clearly not broken not OP. He just happens to be like Tager a scrub/noob killer. -
Not necesarily true, if the architecture of the hardware is different enough it can be quite complicated to make a port, the ps4 uses amd while the nesica uses intel iirc. AH?

Much of the problems with nu came from the poor implementations of the game mechanics like the guard lybra, the bursts imo Of course she had some dumb shit, but mostly the real problems came by the fact that she could abuse the game mechanics like the rest of the 3 top tiers while the rest of the cast were not. I pretty much remember a tournament match or something like that from gamechariot where a bang was stuck blocking helplessly until arakune crushed his guard and raped him after, the whole 3 rounds ended similarly. CT Arakune was pretty dumb, but like i said many of the problems with ct came from the game mechanics, not only from the characters. Also as far as we know, ASW doesn't really take into account the opinion of the casual crowd, i am willing to bet that they completely ignore any complaint that comes from the western players and only take in consideration the opinions of the tournament japanese players, if they take opinions in consideration of course. -

Well, CT arakune was retarded, the implementation of his gameplay was flawed, add that there were a lot of dumb shit on certain mechanics on the game like the guard lybra for example, making it easy to abuse for him. His command grab was the same as the current iterations, where is techable if you do it while your oponent is on hitstun/blockstun -

Lol, are you really incapable to see the disadvantages that it would bring into the table just to take advantage that they are in 3d now? Even if they use (and i hope they do) 2d hitboxes you still have to deal with moves being masked because you are looking at the back of the character, being able to read clearly what your opponent is doing is important on FG's. I am not saying that it can't be done, but it could bring a lot of nuisance to the players. Still, that doesn't change the fact that for capcom sf3 was considered a failure for many years, to the point that they decided to make sf4 an interquel between sf2 and sf3. SF3 simply didn't get that love from the masses, hell that its why there was a meme where people where asking themselves when sf3 was released while seeing the announcement of sf4. Hell, 3s is loathed by a good chunk of the FGC, just look at the (in)famous post of Viscant on SRK. The characters only have some differences on how they are drawn, think about them as Gill from SF3, otherwise they still behave the same mirrowing all the other elements like with what hand they use their weapons. -

Hecatom replied to Shinjin's topic in Guilty Gear General
Is all about the gameplay, not mirroing could potentially change what works and what doesn't, we have already seen this on MK9 for example, where there are combos that only work if your character and/or opponent is looking at the screen or with his/her back to it. -

Lol wut? The SF3 series was considered for a long time a failure not only by the fans but for capcom, it wasn't until many years later that it got more exposure, and still wasn't as strong as other games like the Alpha series and the CvS series, if anything it shows that the fans want some sort of familiarity. Again, if they can't add the whole cast due time constraints that is reasonable, but i am pretty sure that they will do everything in their power to add the whole cast if possible + new characters, also, we don't know how much time would they take to publish the game, for all we know they could release it until 2015. -

Man, i am really happy that you are nt in charge of this game, you think that it would be wise to make the so expected sequel whilre removing characters of the roster? Really? You think that it would be a good idea to royally piss their fanbase by removing characters? The whole idea is to expand from what they have, not reduce the options, you also seem to have the misconception that GG story take presedence over gameplay here. The characters are there not only to fulfill a role in the story but to give a different gameplay experience with their tools to the players. Removing anyone of them for a dumb shit like the story would be the equivalent to giving the middle finger to their fanbase. If they can't add some of them because time constraints is understandable, but for story reasons?, lmao.
