I hope someone records these panels; I'm very interested in some of the responses, and flying cross-country to go isn't a possibility

That's the thing - even if I play one of the characters I have almost zero experience with (e.g. Venom) and only use normals, I tend to win more often than not. People don't like to be handed wins, they like to earn them. I've had several newbies pick up Chipp briefly, but they tend to put him down just as quickly because his defense is simply too low to trade hits and win. Personally, I feel like the easiest character for new players to pick up and enjoy is Slayer. He does high damage, has great normals, etc. Yes, the timing on his "real" combos is pretty tight, but a first-time player isn't going to be doing combos anyways. Jam is great as well (especially for people who have played 3s), but overall I try to just let people play who they like the looks of. If they go for one of the harder characters, I let them know that the character is "hard to play", which eases frustration... so long as they have another newbie to play with. Finding two at once can be pretty hard though.
-
To be honest, the biggest problem I've had is getting people to actually pick up the game and not rage immediately. Having more than one newbie around at once isn't particularly common, and I tend to win somewhat brutally even if I'm playing a character I know little about, mostly because blocking skills carry over.

Yeah, build up a local scene is all I can say. I've been working on getting people into the game, but there's still only a few of us up here, not that that stops me from running tournaments with appstate's gaming club The fact that ASW has plans to produce another Guilty Gear is reassuring at least. Blazblue almost feels like it's designed as an introduction to new-school fighters to me; maybe they're just trying to build their base back up before they release another game with as much depth as GG?

is pretty easy to pick up on stick, but then, she's fairly easy to pick up regardless (in CT, at least). and to a lesser extent are manyfold easier on stick.

There's a particular implementation of USB that PS3 controllers need to work. If you have an Nvidia USB chipset, they won't, if your USB chipset is made by Intel (?), it will. My PS3 stick works on my computer.

Guide for People Coming from SF to New-School Fighters, Part 1

There's already a stick thread there, so this one does seem a little redundant. Merging a bunch of old posts into that new stick thread doesn't seem like such a great idea, perhaps just (some of the) newer ones should be moved, and this thread should be locked with a link to the new one?

It's many times easier to mod a 360 controller to work on PS3 than a PS3 controller to work on 360. This is mainly because 360 controllers have some fancy and as-of-yet uncracked DRM in them, whereas making a custom PCB to work with the PS3 is relatively easy. Parts you'll need (I don't think I'm missing anything): 360 TE Chimp PCB 22 AWG Wire (to hook up the 360 PCB in the TE to the Chimp) Solder Soldering Iron Male USB2-A to Male USB2-B cable (to connect stick to system) There are some pretty detailed threads on the topic in Tech Talk on Shoryuken.
-
Yeah, the PCB is the only good thing about Mayflashes. Seriously, there's not even any real reason to buy the rest of it. The case isn't nearly as friendly to modding as the Madcatz SE, and the stock parts are horrid. They've got a nice PCB though.

For BlazBlue: [A][C] [D] and [C][D] [A] are both standard layouts for the arcade. For GG, it's: [K][H] [P][-][D] Most players will bind Taunt to the [-] if they have a six button layout. I personally use an octo-gate stick, so this is sort of hypocrisy, but you will get faster motions out while riding the gate on a square restrictor. This means that not riding the gate makes more of a difference on an octo gate than a square one. That's one of the main reasons square gates get recommended over octagonal ones, the other being that square is more "standard".

IAD definitely gave me a little trouble at first, but so many other things (double-half-circles and negative edge FRCs come to mind) are easier on a stick.

I wish I didn't have other commitments overlapping with EVO, I'd totally be down for a $1 Waku Waku 7 MM.
-
Chances are, if there's a balancing patch it will be released for arcade machines as well, so an update would probably be a better choice. Having two conflicting BB:CS matchup charts floating around would probably only confuse newcomers.

Guilty Gear FAQ Thread - Ask your questions here!
Narcowski replied to Kairi's topic in Guilty Gear General
Get a Cthulhu stick, that way you can play on both systems. The wii version is fine afaik, but it's not the tournament standard, so you should have some way to use whatever stick you pick on a PS2. -
Riding the gate is fine, especially while you're learning. If you put some effort into learning how far you actually need to move the stick*, you'll end up moving less in matches and getting motions out faster, but I'd say learning how to do standard motions (IAD included) is more important at first. *- extra important if you ever use an octo-gate stick, since they basically just have longer cardinal distance to the gate (with the same engage).

The zetaboards pages have been moved: http://s1.zetaboards.com/blazblue/pages/bbct/ http://s1.zetaboards.com/blazblue/pages/bbcs/

We're conflicting with a bunch of things (HERB and Boone Comic Con to name two), unfortunately. We've been locked into this date for over a year now though
-
Dynames, you make a good point. There's a pretty comprehensive guide for CT here. Actually, both that link and this one for CS should probably be posted somewhere in Beginner Mode.

This is shaping up to be a fun, if small, event.

No seeds. Are you planning on seeding this?
