Yo Eric, I heard on NPR that the Armed Services are rife with proselytizing "born again" xtians. Like, once upon a time they used to get proportional chaplains, such that if 10% of the military was Catholic, then 10% of the chaplains would be catholic. Now, it's apparently 80% evangelical, and their presence has grown to such a point that now dissenting generals feel that they can't speak out against them without it hurting their career. Have you got any first hand experience with this sort of thing? It's counter-productive to have a bunch of superstitious people with crusader fantasies running around the Middle East. I've seen it, but I can't quite grasp their intentions. Christianity is the predominant religion in the US Army, for sure, I just didn't realize that their solution flowchart of "Life fucked up? --> BECOME A CHRISTIAN" was spreading all over the place. I recall soldiers being depressed or suicidal and our Chaplin would recommend something to the extent of "Become Christian/suck it up." I don't really know how much it clashes with current orders being levied to soldiers. Didn't seem like much of an impediment to me, but the Military has a way of taking what is perceivable as a small number and blowing it completely out of proportion. It might be prominent, but I don't believe them when they describe it as being as large of a problem as it is either.

At my old school I had this one guy talk to me about how he was addicted to pornography, and how the lord showed him the way out of this. Basically giving explanations about how great the lord is, and how it completely turned his life around. Its sad how these missionary types prey on the weak minded types like that. Saddest part it was dudes advertising for their bible meetup thing. Religion is something human beings created to cope with shit so it makes sense with why the military would do that.
