Hey guys. Huge fan of Persona 3 and 4 and a competitive fighting game player here. Persona 4 Arena is like a dream come true for me, so I just had to get it. This is my first Arc System game, so I'm just wondering if the default button configuration is the standard button config for arcade sticks?

A good example is Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. The standard button config for arcade sticks is actually type B and not the default, type A button config. I ask because I don't want to be one of those guys who has to change the button config all the time cause he accidentally started playing the wrong way haha.

I'll never understand why people get upset at those who wish to fight comfortably...I JUST got into n argument with a friend about this last night, I rearranged my P4U controls because I just could not play the game the way it was set up, if felt confusing with certain patterns. So I changed it to:

A B

C D

And once I did I actually started to enjoy the game because it felt more like KoF and other SNK games (which I'm used to using the "box" formation); in this position AC let me roll like an SNK game, BD let me do the AoA which I treated exactly like a Blow Back attacks, it felt weird having throw at the bottom but that's mostly to never having an direct throw input in this layout format.

Not trying to discourage anyone from sticking to default (more power to you, and I certainly try to do so in like 90% of the games I play) but it just makes me sad when people hate on those that try to fight comfortably ; -; (especially since regardless I HAVE to change my buttons because my stick is arranged differently than standard sticks---with the L buttons being the 1st 2 orz) /rant

Then in that case, what is the best layout for the default controller?

I'm asking because I once thought that Triangle was the strong attack, but it turns out it's the Weak Persona attack.

Yeah I had the same problem, which is essentially why I changed it to what's above in my post (if pressing AC or CD is proving difficult maybe have a macro on shoulder buttons for em, but I don't think it'd be that bad), which is what I would use is I was on pad too; I've always though P4U's controls to be a bit nonsensical, but it helps (me at least) loads with such a simple flip (kinda wish they pulled a BB and had 2 arcade standard layouts :<)

But yeah, like I said, just go what FEELS right to you, if you aren't comfortable in a fight, it makes little sense to participate, IMO D:

If you stick with default for ~2 hours, you'll be used to it.

Those two hours are hell, though

That's what Furix tried to tell me, but I stuck with default for a whole day and was hating every second of this game :<

But once I made the switch I could feel my fun-ometer slowly rising :D

I tried using a few different layouts, but I ended up going with the default because that's where the 2-button inputs feel the most natural to me. In some layouts I had throw or air turn as diagonals, and it was bleh.

lol I am trying this one:

BCD

A

Weird shit is, I never tried this layout before, I used this in BB:

ABC

D

Maybe the default scheme is best? Current layout felt weird, specially when trying the challenges :v:

KOFXIII is set up like this, so I'm not sure what you mean by your change in buttons being more like KOF.

AC

BD

I use a fightpad, so I do:

A C (NA)

B D (NA)

It matches to the buttons used in the ingame command lists and makes sure they're no awkward reaching to do anything.

You're thinking of purely the numerics, I'm referring to actions:

Weak-Punch Strong-Punch

Weak-Kick Strong-Kick

WP+WK = Roll

SP+SK = Heavy Blow attack (All Out Attack)

Both Punches/Kicks = EX attacks

My favorite layout is:

ABC

D

I used that in BLazBlue and Arcana Heart. And maybe Melty Blood, I forget MB layout.

But honestly I have not really had any problems with this games default layout. I sometimes forget D exists, being hidden away at bottom-right like that, But it's working well for me so far.

Some people in my area use:

ACD

B

It is less cluttered than the box layout, and the only odd input is B+D.

I use the default

A C

B D

But I took some time to get used to it honestly. Coming from BB, I kept confusing the A & B buttons. After playing for an hour or so, it became second nature. Luckily, I can still play BB lol.

I've been thinking of changing up my configure for pad. Right now I have:

R1:Furious

R2:Evade

L1:OMC

L2:OMB

What's everyone else using? What's been bothering me is a good preset for air turning for cross-ups. Also, I use the D-pad, not the stick on my controller.

I personally have never bothered to use presets. I just stick to the default 99% of the time. I go into the settings and turn off all the other buttons so if i hit them on mistake i won't get anything.

As for the d-pad, that's personal preference too. Although I have heard if your stick has options to switch between D-pad and stick, and you get used to one of them, changing it will effect your input timings. I don't think i'm good enough to notice the difference, personally, But I always used the stick because I find DP's easier.

For P4A:

ACD

B

For BB (because of Rachel):

ABC

D

In all honestly, I don't quite understand why would people prefer the square layout config compare to the one I'm using, where all the buttons are readily placed under my fingers, but I don't fret over such thing.

Personally I have my buttons (PS2) set up like:

Triangle - C

Circle - D

Square - A

X - B

L1 - B+D

R1 - A+C

The R1 for air turns is a must for me, like you said, I like to have it on the opposite side of the controller from the D-Pad. Everything else I don't really need a preset for, I don't actually use L1 to DP very often, but I use both shoulders to OMC/OMB by pressing them + one additional button. I don't bind L2/R2 at all because they can be pressed accidentally.

i do

/ \ XACX

\ / XBDX

because i dont like having the buttons so close to the joystick (im a big guy) and i really hate how all the new sticks have the left two buttons lower than the rest (the angles piss me off.. i just want a box) i try to stick to any default layout in games other than shifting them over though, on the off chance i ever end up somewhere with an actual cabinet, i would hate to try to play on one and realize i cant because the buttons arnt the way i am used to.

(oh, and i never use macros... people that play stick and still use macros confuse me...)
