Since there might be some people for who this is their first event and don't know anyone, or are driving in from out of town in a number that can't be split in teams of 3, or for whatever reasons can't find teammates prior to the event, wouldn't it be a good idea to provide them with the option of signing up individually and the matching them with other players in the same situation? I mean, only if it's the main event... you wouldn't want people to not come because of a teammate issue.

yeah, this would be a good idea but we would have to come to a decisive conclusion about teams or singles, and the poll is still open (and not horribly far apart) until alan says something.

I'd feel differently about this if it wasn't NEC, aka you know, historically THE airdasher event of the year. The one tournament I look forward to all year long (aside from UMAD, shameless promotion lol).

I think we just got unlucky with the release date of the game. Because seriously, I get the whole "the game's only been out for a month" thing, and only the Japanese version at that. It's kind of silly to take it mega seriously. But given that I travel out of the country for it, maybe I just can't help it.

Whatever, I think 2+ months would be enough for me to get over it and still come. Because I still want to support my community 100%.

I honestly like the idea for a team-based tournament. Then again, BBCP IS the game that all of us are anticipating and wanted to play the most of it. I don't mind what everybody says. We just need a full course of Hype!!!

I just hope that we can make everything in time.

I'm still sticking my main to Tsubaki, but I'm still gonna play/vote for you!!! I love you, Asami!!!

If you haven't been to every NEC since '08 then you have no clue how hard it is to get people to actually do something on the second day (even FINALS). Believe me, I know. People are too tired to get up on Sunday morning because they've been too busy having fun all night to get down to the room at a decent time to finish before we have to pack up or a ton of people have to leave. You all can't go to sleep by 8 AM and expect me to wake you all up individually like your goddamn mother, put a paper and pen in front of your face, and then tell you to sign up. Cause guess what? That's what it takes.

This doesn't mean you can sleep in then go out to breakfast for two hours Sunday morning and expect me to hold up brackets for you and the 10 other people you decided to invade Denny's with. Sleep and food have always gotten the better of Sunday tournaments. You all can't commit as a community to anything, not even set an alarm on your cellphone for 10AM and plan ahead for food.

I always say that I will run X side event if Y people/teams sign up. I can't remember the last time this happening. 2009? 2010? You're a community full of slackers. Ask LK, New England, and New York when the last time we had a team event was. It's laughable to think that anyone here actually thinks teams would happen on the second day if we did all of singles on Saturday.

Friday will be a shit show. People will show up late. The venue will be hard to walk around in once it's packed (if we learned anything from last year). Friday at the Copa is more of a time for us to all to get together, drink, eat, talk shit, money match, and mash. Not singles nor teams will be done on Friday for any game. That's a fact.

Also, Eric wants to have Finals streamed by Spooky on Sunday. You know what this means? What if finals were anywhere from Noon till 7PM on Sunday? Guess what's not happening? The side event. I'm not holding up a tournament for two+ hours because we're all too busy running/playing/watching top 4/6/8 of finals for 2-3 games.

This is why you all have to choose. You're not getting the best of both worlds. This isn't some fairy tail.

Your only hope to get both is this:

1). You all get up at a decent time Sunday. A decent time is way before finals are supposed to start, or we specifically ask Eric to get finals done with ASAP Sunday so we can get the side events started. We won't be running both at the same time. The middle of the day for finals will not work.

2). You all don't mind the side tournament possibly being single elimination due to time and space constraints.

So once again. I tell you to choose. No one will hate you because you like singles over teams. That's fine, voice your opinion: it's the only way we get to hear how you feel.

BUT DON'T, and I mean DON'T expect to get both singles and teams for multiple games unless you as a community make some sort of sacrifice to make it happen. I'm not holding your hands on this.

Dude.

Single elim team side tourney sounds hype as fuck. Single elim in general is too uncommon in the states (Probably because people are babies).

You should just be really willing to DQ people if they're 15 minutes late and say so. Holding brackets for people is a nice thing to do, not something that should be expected.

I'd be down for single elim for a side event, especially if the side event was singles. I'd much prefer teams for the main tournament though, since I think its alot more fun and hype.

I would be down for a single elim team tournament on Sunday. It sound interesting and lots of fun. I can't imagine more than a few people actually being IN finals on Sunday, and as for everyone else that just wants to sit around and watch finals, then they should've left Saturday and gone home to watch a stream. Making people wake up Sunday is the hardest part, but like St1ckBuG said...that's on them.

Personally, I'd rather have Singles main event, Single Elim Team Side Tournament on Sunday.

I'll vouch for St1ckBuG on this (like he needs it; he'll probably just tell me to EAD :x ): I've helped run tournaments at NEC before, and there's a reason the side tournament is always run first: if you run the side event before the main event, people will still generally get their ass up for the main event. However, doing the main event first and then the side event and people would just flake out hard, not getting up on time or deciding to spend three hours at Denny's or WaWa or whatever, or just having to leave early. I know from experience that for stuff like MB and Arcana, teams on Saturday and singles on Sunday would work, but the other way around was always a hot mess.

There's no way you could run anything Friday at the Copa even if you wanted to; it was ridiculously packed last year and I imagine that there's going to be even more people this year. It's a great time (and I'm thankful for St1ckBuG for putting it together again this year), but it's not the time to run anything even remotely serious.

As for the single/team split, I always thought that teams was a response to Japan's horrible tournament format, and has no business being run as a main event at a US tournament.

we ran a single elim team tournament for BB at ECT 2012. people werent really...enthused hahaha. i dont really think the hype will be there. you get the event, but at the end of the day we are picking one or the other, so i think most people shouldnt really count on a side event happening, especially with how cramped it is going to be this year with sunday finals.

Honest question, what time are we heading out to the Copa anyway? If I recall we didn't really head out until later on Friday anyway. If someone was interested in running a small side tournament on Friday for people that were already there, and could finish up before everyone wants to head to the Copa, that could work. Mind you I'd still imagine we'd have to all go to the Copa around 8 at the earliest for this to work.

Posted

Wouldn't that imply anyway for most people to arrive early friday/thursday? It just doesn't fit everyone schedule to be at the event this early/long. It's almost a luxury for me and the other guys I'm driving to stay throughout sunday without driving past 2am.

Coppabanna is a place to tokyo tea and mash buttons and do random fun events, last year it was a kumite but we had people from Japan coming over.

Posted

You're not doing anything serious at the Copa. Not enough space. We're also not allowed to use the ballroom(s) at all on Friday due to Curleh. This I know for a fact.

Single elimination is fine, and I actually prefer it as a side tournament format, but some people won't even pay $5/person to enter. Beginners do not like single elimination.

Posted

If singles were a side/single elimination tournament, the entry fee would either need to be free or very cheap (like a $1), to encourage new players to enter. I'm down for anything that means I get to play more people.

Posted

Agreed. $1 is what we do at TSB, but some people don't even enter tournaments at majors if there's no payout since it's pretty much just wasting their time. It's a trade-off you never see until you get the sign-up sheet.

Posted

I picked option 3 but I honestly don't care what GG is since I won't enter that. I just want BB teams.

Wasting their time? Tell 'em to get a job.
