Hey guys, just wanted say Hi to everyone and maybe get some feedback on who I should try out in GG :)

First, some background:

Currently mainly play NRS games (MK9 and IGAU) and I consider myself really good at both games. I've also played Smash competitively for years (SSBM mostly). I play TTT2 and all SF games casually. Basically, I'm saying I'm decently versed in fighters haha.

My playstyle:

I prefer staying on the ground, playing footsies and I get boners from creating situations where I can whiff punish lol. This is why I feel I need some guidance because air-dashers are a bit out of my comfort zone. I do think my experience with Smash and Injustice helps a tiny bit but these arc-sys games are a different animal haha.

Considering my playstyle and all the reading and video watching I've done for GG (including all the GG bits so far) I think Slayer fits me but I keep hearing that he has tough execution. I don't mind that at all, I play execution heavy chars. in my other games too but since this game is already a bit daunting with all of the intricacies of the mechanics I don't want to overwhelm myself learning. Jam also appeals to me even though she seems to be a more rushdown character (I feel I could maybe use her ground mobility as a footsie tool but I'm probably wrong lmao).

TL : DR

Basically my question is should I be scared of Slayer's execution and learn someone simpler at the expense of my playstyle or should I just suck it up and accept that not all things come easy and I can't just keep scrubbing my way through like I did with my other games ;)

Appreciate the help everyone!

Hmm, I don't know if I can help you that much since I'm new to Guilty Gear, myself. But I have been playing with Sol Badguy and Chipp. Though both of them could require to use air-dash every now and then..

Second, definitely. Playing someone you enjoy>>>>>>>>>>>>playing someone you don't.

Hey, welcome!

From reading your first paragraph, I was thinking Slayer, and then you came right out and said it. I don't think execution is a thing you should be afraid of, for a couple reasons. a.) You're going to be more motivated to put the work in if it's a character you love, and b.) Xrd will be coming out soonish, and there's every indication that the execution curve will be lowered significantly. Plus, improving execution is something you can take with you into other games and other characters.

Another recommendation I would make is Faust, his execution is very simple and he has a very good spacing-heavy neutral game with projectiles that kind of reminds me of Injustice. Jam is really good at punishing mistakes in neutral, but she's a little more offensively minded. Kliff is also a character you should look at once you get the +R patch.

If anything that may influence your choice, whiff punishing has one aspect that I found to be slightly different from the other games I've fiddled with. Counter hit is triggered even on whiff and moves can change on CH depending on them. As to how this affects you as a potential Slayer or Jam player? Slayer has stuff like ground bounces and other shit alike that helps converting into combos (boner status) and jam has pokes like 2S that can stagger the opponent which is totally desirable.

Though, Jam is probably gonna do it in a fashion closer to footsies than Slayer IMO. Slayer is more about Abare with moves that have some parts of the body invincible and other shit alike. Essentially it's the same thing, but it just doesn't feel as such. This is just my thoughts on it, but doing Bison's sweep for instance doesn't feel like doing Ryu's sweep when whiff punishing. Both work and are as efficient as the other one, just not the same satisfaction.

As for execution, Slayer probably isn't as bad as it sounds. I'm unsure how that changed in +R, but in AC he could get above average damage without working ridiculously hard. I will admit that he has hard stuff, but it would be the difference in between saying your combo does 60% versus 45%. My point is he's not unplayable because he has ridiculously hard stuff when it comes to optimization. To note, this may or may not be an issue, but he cannot cancel attacks into each other as freely as the rest of the cast. There's more links than cancels when doing pressure or combos.

But in general, they slightly lowered the execution requirements for most characters. Don't be afraid of it, the initial bump in the learning curve is more scary than what follows

Slayer execution is actually harder in +R imo but it's not that bad

it also gives you a good excuse to not go for a lot of the really hard stuff  , I pretty much never see Japanese players using the undertow xx 6H link in matches

Slayer is super sexy good at whiff punishing, but you'll have to get used to a unique style of movement and inputs (not hard with time). Things like forward dash or backdash cancel Mappa and Dandy are great for faking people out, and getting them to eat a CH into a full combo, or heavy corner carry. You also have Dead on Time to punish anything you can react to quickly enough, even on startup.

Slayer's execution barriers are different, but they feel less daunting from what I've played of him in +R. Admittedly, I've been maining Testament since ACR, so I don't have as much time in him as I'd like. A plus side is FRC's scare a lot of newer players, and he's not too reliant on them.

My advice is play him, mess with his tools, if you love his movement options and his ability to punish and get mixups all day, play him and kick ass.

Oh, and his anti-air options are the tits, so you can play that grounded game without fear of most air options if you want.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! It helps a lot. Everyone's been really cool so far, which makes it much more fun getting into this awesome game :)

Thanks for insight, and I'm glad you mentioned Xrd. That's one of the main reasons I'm trying to learn AC(+R) right now. I'm also assuming the execution won't be as strict just from the trend I've been seeing with BB and P4A. So if anything, I may be over prepared, which I would love haha.

I did not know that CH is triggered off a whiff as well, that's crazy to me haha. And what's Abare?

Awesome, you're getting me excited to use him! :)

I don't play guilty gear, but this one I can answer. ;)

Abare is basically..."damage off of random hits." When you're both kind moving back and forth, and you throw something out with, really, just the intent to control space, and it hits (frequently on a weird corner of a hitbox, or at extreme range), if you can convert that into damage well, more-or-less regardless of the type of attack, that character has good abare.

It's like...accidental footsies. "real" footsies would be you dancing out of range of an opponent's attack and then punishing the whiff with a specific move. Abare is you just kinda throwing something out there to control space and then being able to convert it if it hits. Similar, but a subtle difference.

Not really. "Abare" in japanese fighting game communities is used when talking about characters getting out of pressure/oki through a move (a reversal, or just a fast normal), interrupting the other player's momentum. It's also often used during japanese commentaries during matches. The term used for the scenario you're describing (which is simply the ability to efficiently impose your game during the neutral phase) is "tachimawari" (立回り).

A belated welcome, SNKE ^_^

EDIT: I also second Slayer, especially if you're used to playing Mileena or Catwoman.

Thanks! Funny you mention CW, I was just messing with her earlier, but I don't play her...or Mileena lmao

Sup SNKE. Welcome to Dustloop. I'm a NRS player and new to GG too. Getting used to the Notation Guide.

Hey dude! Awesome! Lol yeah the notation guide takes some time (especially going from using numbers for buttons to numbers for directions haha). Who do use in the NRS games and who are picking up in GG?
