This stick is pretty decent if you're considering saving money buying a stick.

Only real issue there is it's Mad Catz which means you've about a 50% chance of if actually working properly. Mad Catz -CAN- make decent products but there is virtually no quality control it seems, so sometimes you just get a faulty one (see my fight pad with the dysfunctional 9 input.)

I saw the 2D loop and I've noticed something you can do.

If you ignore the follow up and instead do a ]2D[ j.2C -> Alle~Can

.. The opponent will tech as he hits the ground and you can set him up for an unblockable reset as the 2D comes down right as he techs, which means you could be on the ground ready to do 2A and can repeat it.

Potentially a new infinite that can be only bursted out of?

NINJA EDIT:

Alright, Puru working on this, if I can get the unblockable to happen, I can just do 2A->2B->3C->Shenanigans and repeat the 2D and end with the unblockable reset. If I can do this right, I will put videos up with what I'm talking about.

j.2C has to be done so low to the ground though that they are hit and tech on the ground.

SUPER NINJA EDIT:

In my excitement, I forgot you can roll. >_>

Which kills it, completely.

I did that loop at AI today...apparently when you try doing 2D the second time the opponent recovers quicker then usual...so to 'trick' them from recovering try jumping up after you do Nirvana's clap which makes your opponent think you will grab then quickly do 2D when you land do 2B to poke.

So I got BlazBlue 4 days ago and decided to main Carl. However, this is my first fighting game (not counting the Smash Bros. Series) so I am having a lot of problems. I have a few questions regarding Carl/BlazBlue. 1. Carl is pretty hard to learn (or so I've heard). I lack experience with fighting games so should I try and main an easier character first? 2. How long does it generally take to get decent with Carl? 3. I use the analog stick on the PS3 controller. My precision sucks, but will it get better the more I practice with the controller? Should I invest money in a fight stick like the HRAP3SA? 4. How exactly should I learn Carl? Do I start with controlling Nirvana, should I start with Carl-only combos, or should I first practice things like the Ala-cancel? Should I work on defense before learning offensive techniques? 5. How hard is it to learn the combos? Not setting up for them, but just actually performing the moves.

1. I think it depends on the person, As soon as I got Blazblue I jumped in with Carl and sat in training for a good 90% of my time during the first two of weeks or so. So no you don't have to change if you don't want :kitty:.

2.I'd say about a week and a half, just messing around and testing stuff out is a nice way to learn

3.Analog is fine for now, infact I'd suggest you stick with the analog, then when/if you decide to play competitively switch to a Fight stick.

4.Carl only combos first, then practice using his 6D in ground loops, then try to mix up the ground loops by learning Alle-can~.

5.Not really, It all depends on how dedicated you are :3, Messing around in training mode is the best way to learn in my honest opinion.

Hope that helped~.

So I should stick to training mode? What settings should I set for the training dummy?

Well I don't plan on playing in actual tournaments, but I do at some point want to play others online. Should I still invest in a fight stick?

How many combos should I learn? I know that there are tons of them (specific characters, and universal ones). I doubt I could learn them all so should I mostly stick to universal combos? Oh and do you think I should learn the clap loops? It was removed in CS (I think) so learning it might not be worthwhile.

5.Not really, It all depends on how dedicated you are :3, Messing around in training mode is the best way to learn in my honest opinion.

Thanks for the response :). My questions are in bold.

What influenced your decision to use Carl, Obsessed? Anyway, welcome to Dustloop!:) Edit: As for the clap loop, it hasn't been removed, just nerfed since Nirvana runs out of energy faster and the grab window isn't as generous as in CT. Most characters' damage outputs have been nerfed, except for Carl, Hakumen, and a few others that have been buffed slightly. By this logic, Carl won't be as easy to KO. He won't have to rely on the loop to win tournaments in CS, because of all this. Don't get me wrong, though. It's possible to win without loops in casual play. However, in competitive tournaments, you won't stand much of a chance without the loop, unless you get really creative like the professional player Dio. Ironically, Dio was the one who discovered the loop in the first place. The others will probably know more than I do, though, so don't take this as if it's set in stone.

I just really liked his gimmick, and I loved the idea of attacking with Nirvana and Carl in tandem.

Hmm do you know if Dio has a youtube account? I would like to see some of his videos so I can get some ideas.

Anyway I don't plan on going any further than random online matches, and the occasional online tournament organized on this, and other similar sites. Though, I guess it couldn't hurt to learn the clap loop. How long should it take to master?

You can find a LOT of Dio-related videos here. By the way, I'm pretty sure Dio is actually a girl, but someone else might correct me on that. The 2C-8D loop is easy to remember and pretty effective on its own, if you don't feel like the throw loop. Pressing D during the clap helps shorten the time needed pretty significantly, from what I've discovered. Like others have said, spending about a week in training is standard for learning the loop.

How do I know which vids have Dora in them? The people playing are not labelled. Does Dora always use an orange Carl?

I assume the combos eventually feel natural? Right now the combos feel so unnatural that I often fail the timing. I'm having a very hard time pulling off basic Carl-only combos in training mode.

These are the ones I am currently trying to perfect.

Carl Only:

1. - 2A->5B->6B->623C->5B->jc->jB->dj->jB->jC/j214C

2. - 2A->2B->3C->2A->5B->jc->jB->dj->jB->jC/j214C

3. - (corner) 5B->5C->623C->5B->jc->jB->dj->jB->jC/j214C

4. - 2A->2B->3C->632146C --good for baiting bursts

I assume that the jc's are jump cancels. How exactly do I jump cancel? Oh and I'm not sure if this is because I am using the analog stick, but I can't get 632146C to activate. Carl always does some other C related move whenever I try to pull it off (and yes I made sure I had 50% heat so it isn't that).

Maybe I should buy a fight stick before trying to master combos.

Dio* not Dora lol. Dora is a Bang player. and Yes in CT Dio is commonly the yellow traffic cone carl. In CS he seems to have taken a shining to the purple and black carl. Jump Canceling basically means the move cancels into a jump (makes sense?) so you just input a jump during the move's animation. In general BB is a speedy speedy game so you're gonna have to work up your twitch. you'll usually want to jump cancel with 9 btw. As far as using the analog goes, yes. Inputs can be a nightmare of muscular memory. I still am prone to occasional Cantabile instead of Cantatas or my personal favorite, jumping when i input 63214]D[. Basically you'll want to, for starters, just practice the motions slow-ish. the game is fairly forgiving about the speed you input at. and once you get a feel for how the motion goes, start working on going faster. once you've got the input down, then try working it into combos and see how it works out.

To: Obsessed Getting to know Carl from scratch took me about 4 hours non stop perfecting the juggling loop, grab infinite, and basically all the move sets...of course I already had a fight stick so...might be different in your situation

Well I know I was advised to go in training mode and practice combos, but I am finding that hard to do. I'm failing basic Carl only combos because the button presses just feel so unnatural. Also I can't for the life of me do his Gear super. The analog stick just won't recognize the motion and does something else. So for now I am just going to go into Arcade mode and mess around. I figure that maybe it will help the controls feel more natural to me, and it will at least teach me how to control/use Nirvana. Once I get a fight stick I will practice in the traditional way.

It took me awhile to get the Gear super down too. :vbang: Just keep practicing and you will be able to do it with no problems. One thing that I was messing up on was doing the motion too fast.

Oh trust me, I don't think I can do it on my PS3 controller. I used the training mode feature and the arrows are all over the place whenever I try to do the Gear Super.

Anyway my method is sort of working. I know it is against the AI, but Arcade mode is helping me get better. I'm now getting better at coordinating attacks with Nirvana, and I am getting less reckless with Carl. At some point I will return to training mode, but not until I at least get a good fight stick.

Are you using the analog stick or the directional pad? I can't do anything reliably on the dual shock controller stick. Also, did you try mapping D to R1 instead of X? It makes performing combos involving Nirvana on the PS3 pad much less of a pain.

Hmm this is kind of odd, but I can pull of the Gear super when I am one the right of my opponent, but not on the left. And Niko I am using the analog stick. I tried using the 4 button D-pad but that didn't go over too well.

Try using the DPad. I played Zappa on pad for a month or two, I'd never touch the analog. Really tho, for negative edge characters, I'd recommend saving up for a stick. Feels good man.

Most people have a strong side. Practice the hell out of your weak side, or you're going to get destroyed.

Seriously, work with the Dpad more. PS dpads are pretty good, tho they may not be Saturn pads.

EDIT:

Oh, btw guize

Carl is tight still. Haven't played in about 2 months, and I made it to finals at a recent tournament. It was only an 8 man bracket, tho, so waaaaaaaaaah.

I wish people didn't cry about Carl so damn much. I might still be playing this game, if not for the constant bitching.

So i'm hitting up Ikkicon in Austin at the start of next month and since there wasn't really a carl specific tournament thread I was wondering if anyone else was planning on showing up and maybe entering the tournament.
