If you play on pad, it is perfectly normal to remap the D button, generally to a shoulder button. This is because, simply put, on a stick, you have a different finger for each button you press, making it relatively simple to hold one button while still pressing others. But on a pad, you press every face button with your thumb, which makes it extremely awkward to do things like hold down one button while pressing the button on the opposite side. Thus, to remove this handicap, you assign it to something where you can devote a finger to it. Pad Arakune players often map several buttons to different places have better control of their bugs by allowing buttons to be pressed by different fingers. In Guilty Gear, Pad Eddie players would do the same thing to better control little Eddie. It's hardly "cheap;" rather, instead of giving you an advantage, it's removing a disadvantage and allowing you an even playing field.

I remaped D to the R-trigger, when I had my pad anyway. If you're thinking about maining Carl and getting a stick. Make the switch ASAP, otherwise you're going to go through hell relearning all of your combos and learning how to do the Gear super flawlessly again.

Same, for me as well.

I just picked up Carl and I love his style (I sub Liesolotte in AH). I do have a couple of questions about how to use Carl.

1) How do I do Negative Edge? I know some of his BnBs require Negative Edging, but I can't consistently pull it off.

2) Con Anima seems pretty useless, so if its a good move, when should I use it?

Negative edge is just letting go of the button - literally giving the controller a negative input, from 1 (pressed) to 0 (not pressed.) If you're using pad and have a hard time doing this at the same time as other things, try mapping D to a shoulder button so you can press it with your index finger instead of your thumb. Other than that, it's really just like pressing a button... But instead of pressing the button, you release it.

Pressing D activates Ada, and letting go of D deactivates her (neutral) or does a move (any direction), so tapping D really just activates her and makes her do a move, so she has to go through the 16-frame activation time before she can do her move... Which obviously is much worse than just going straight to the move. In general if you're using Ada you should be holding down D, so that you can release it when you need to. Kinda odd to get used to, but really there's not a whole lot to it, on a technical level.

Con Anima is a bad move in CT and you shouldn't use it. If you really feel the need to use it, though, generally you use it to tick throw in your blockstrings. But I don't even think you can get any real damage off of it in CT (where "real damage" means "clap loop").

Nah, that's the same as in CT. If Nirvana's attack brings her down to 0 HP, she'll continue if Carl's hit regardless.

Fun unlimited Carl Bullshit:

xx -> [5C 6D]x 8 5B 6B 623c 2D (slight delay) 214214]D[ :: 8k

You can do this from 0 Heat and by the time u get to rep 8 you will have 60 heat lol.

bullshit

in corner

xx -> 3C j.2C 2D [8D]x n :: Nirvana only clap loop, no escape.

No wonder he has 6k HP.

Is Carl's Counter Assault a good use of his Heat? I don't really find that I use Carl's supers except for Fermata during the 2C -> 8D loop.

Dude all 3 of his supers are AWESOME. I use Fermata the least of the 3 honestly.

The gear super is great for baiting bursts and stalling for time so nirvana can heal, plus its a great "get off of me super" I use it as a reversal often.

Rapsody of Memories to me is easily in the top 3 for "Best Supers in the Game". The amount of mixup you can do while the opponent is stuck in block stun is retarded. Its almost guaranteed damage everytime. I use it a lot.

Carl'sd counter assault is not that great but use anyways. Anyway you can get the opponent off of you, do it.
