What the hell does "david sirloin, and snake shirt" have to do with Teaching GG?????

.......................nope, I've got nothing. :I:

Care to elaborate cause I'd love to be able to convince a few people myself.

First of all, it really helps to know the actual person, and what they like to see/hear. For each person, I've tried a different approach. For a group, I simply turned it on, put it on 2 Player, told them to go nuts, walked away for about 10 minutes, and then played one match about 10 minutes later destroying someone with incredibly flashy Anji. They were all looking at me like I just broke the universe or something, and before I knew it I practically had a growing cult. It even managed to attract someone who generally hates fighting games, and now he's the second best in our group using Potemkin.

As for individuals, it helps to make the game sound good particularly to them. Speak with enthusiasm, talk about the best pros of the game, and in some cases try comparing it to other games they might be playing (if you can). I had a friend whom I managed to convince to try out the game after having a 25 minute conversation about both Super Smash Bros and then Starcraft, and managed to find a middle ground in the conversation to open up GG:

"It's got more solid gameplay elements than Brawl with less Meta Knight bullshit, mostly because like Starcraft everyone is incredibly well balanced"

"Huh sounds neat, I'll look it up"

"Tell you what, I'll just bring it in tomorrow and show you."

"Oh, okay cool"

He is now one of the few people I know that had the balls to play Venom (no pun intended)

Hell, I was even able to get my younger sister into Guilty Gear (a girl playing GG, ZOUNDS!), and she actually plays a fairly competent Millia.

So to get people into the game, you need to find a way to make it interesting to them. Also, try to introduce them into the game like you would any other, let them experiment and if they ask questions feel free to answer them.

Pay attention to the details.

Well I haven't really taught GG per se, and the people I tried to get into it don't look like they're that interested, but I've only been playing GG for a year and a month or so now and I'm pretty much the product of my GG scene's teaching. I think that the best way of teaching, is to just let them play you and give pointers. If they really want to get better, they will. Like others said, if you kill someone's interest in Guilty Gear then maybe they're not cut out for competitive playing. Even someone with no prior fighting game experience can get into it, since I didn't pick it up till Accent core showed up at our campus cove. There's really one person that I learn to play competently from though, because he has a habit of giving people advice on how to beat him. Was a bad habit when he told a Baiken player how to get around things like Gaurd crush kick or when to hit him out of Danzai during a tourney, and then matched up with him 4 times that tournie. Most of how to learn guilty gear really comes from the drive to learn for the newbie, but pointers always help them improve faster in my opinion.

explain something to people, then if they don't believe you or don't use it, put them in situations over and over where it would be there only option. Once they start catching on, continue to overuse it in you game, but with a gradual sway back to normal. Next time you tell them thats the solution to their problem, well they usually fall right into it.

I highly agree. I am actually very new to guilty gear. I started some months ago. Im still pretty scrub but it is my first fighter. My friend introduced me and has been teaching me ever since. This has brought me to tons of self realizations of timings, and just general rules about guilty gear.

What he had done for me is just ran me threw basics of cancels, highs/lows, dashing but Nothing too technical of spacing, IBs, RCs/FRCs, invincability, waight or anything. Not even IAD or jump canceling. Just basic old SF ST stuff.

Having a personal intrest in the game is a must becase as he has tried before, you cant force people to like fighters. I rely'd on him (and probably still do) way too much. Not just for questions but for everything. He first worked alot on blocking. He'd just run up an low sweep over and over untill I relized I need to block low. Then he would mix it up then go back to only low sweeping to see if I got it. Gradually he would speed up the mix ups between highs and lows untill I got it. Then he started explaining IB, frame data and poking and just going one by one.

Good use of teaching IB examples is Pots 6HS, Slidehead gimmick. This showed me exactly how important it is to IB things. Examples are the best thing for teaching. It puts a face to the things you say.

After frame data and safely poking came, hit confirming, along with comboing and RC/FRCs and the importance of tension. Then oki's, meatys, spacing and setups. I still have ALOT to learn I realize but what helped me mostly is just the reinforcement of "just have fun." I cant say im anywhere near good, or even decent. I CAN say is that I am better than I was before I started playing thanks to him.

Best advice he gave was "Watch lots of vedios and pay attention to what the players are thinking and determin whats a poke and whats ment for punishment. Pay attention to what they did wrong and what they did right to win them the match." "Also play as meny people as possable. :]"

Teach? I only consider a successful teacher one who also learns from their student. (I.E. no matter how good you are, there are still things to learn and ways to improve!)

but really haven't tried to teach too many people. either they already have a grasp on how to play or just aren't cut out for guilty gear.

i may suggest little things but really that's it.

youtube taught me. (and i'm still learning)

I think it wouldn't be wise to assume that only certain people have the affinity to play Guilty Gear, because I honestly think it's a game that can be played well by anyone who wants to be good, and it always starts with the person getting into the game.

Don't assume that only the most initially competent players are capable of winning, hell I've seen a guy play Dance Dance Revolution with ONE LEG. Miracles happen people.

I good majority of people I've "converted" over to GG so to speak fell into one of 3 groups:

1)"OMG Supa Smash Bros BRAWL is teh greatest fighting game ever NOOB."

2)"Dude, why would I ever want to play anything other than WOW? Are you retarded, WOW is the best game ever."

3)"Nah, I don't really like fighting games, they're kinda repetitive you know, especially since all of them are practically the same"

Sometimes people need a little push before they can get their ball rolling.

Bucklemyshoe I say your I-no 101 video and I have to say those moves were beast. I am going to master that stuff after I get good at sidewinder loops. Mad props for the vid.

Oh and Digital Watches don't forget your towel at Final Round.

Heh, unfortunately the likelihood is kinda low, but it was definitely fun playing you and your hard-to-block I-No.

Wow. That's impressive, here I thought people like that were a lost cause :v:

It's only a somewhat lost cause if they decide to convert back after getting proficient at GG. I've had that happen before, apparently he came to the conclusion that "Potemkin is too stupid good and anyone using him automatically wins", to which I butterfly raped him to prove otherwise but apparently didn't seem to take.

Him and his friend (who went from Axl to Slayer) decided that it was more skillful and pro to play Brawl...........with all the items on...................and only play Final Destination and Mario Bros classic. "Shudders"

Almost makes me want to challenge them to a Melee no item match with Kirby just to disprove their other theory regarding tiers (in that tier alone decides the match, which I think is a load of crap).

Occasionally, you will run into hopeless cases, but just remember to never call it quits before giving them a chance.

Maybe I can put some GG life back into the group if I hosted a small tourney or something...

LOL! Oh these poor misguided souls :gonk:

Well good luck. I've been trying to teach a brawl player over aim, he got really into it but he seems to have gone back to brawl. Don't think he dislikes GG now, it's either he just doesn't feel like it or he doesn't feel like finding people to play. But it makes sense, I can't really force him to do things by playing against him by teaching over aim :sweatdrop:

Then there's another guy I was able to play here, but when I tried showing him combos he said he would just make it up as he went, didn't seem serious about it. I give up too easily :I:

That Axl Player was insanely annoying though. He knew a good majority of the movelist for the character, but decided to just spend every match doing 2H, 6H, 2H, 6H, rinse repeat till all stains removed. He called it the "Skill Combo, because of how much skill it required" Although Slayer wasn't much better since that just turned into 2D, 2H, 2D, 2H, 2D, 2H, over and over again......which he called the "Pro combo" He would only ever play seriously if it was against me, mostly because he knew I wouldn't fall for that BS. It's a shame because he was actually pretty good, but chose to be a dick. Even during Brawl, all he does is pick the top tier characters and projectile/item spam. He likes taking people from 0-120% percent with Fan Lockdown, and claims it takes amazing talent to do. Anyways, I've been working on convincing a Guild Wars player, which actually went pretty smooth. He plays Venom/Axl.

Damn... I'd probably mess that up somewhere with the kind of hand eye coordination I've got, I'd turn it into just mashing 5/6H... I'll call it the... "Rape Combo"...naw...

Hey now, what's wrong with Brawl? I can appreciate both a Falcon Punch and a Pilebunker.

So can I, but it's a lot harder to appreciate Brawl when people item spam.

Wonder what would win between a Pilebunker and a Falcon Punch....

....ah screw it, just put Jigglypuff in the center of the 2 for epic lols.

Anyways, Guild Wars player is into GG now, hopefully it'll last for a while. His Venom may not be amazing, but his ball formations are picking up. I'll give him about 2 months to do whatever before trying to kick his ass again (which is actually fun. I thoroughly enjoy playing against Venom players. Matchup feels very even throughout the match)

Tried hosting a small tourney for the main group (and when I mean small I mean imagine about 12 entrants, 2 of which bailed). I didn't participate since they all agreed that if I did it would be pointless, since they were all convinced I'd win no matter what (not sure whether to be happy or upset at that)

All the matches were pretty damn good (except for the first one. It was painful watching a practicing Millia get raped by a semi-clueless May). The final with Axl vs Sol was incredibly close.

Wait... we're not supposed to use items? I'm pretty sure we are. Otherwise, why would they not have taken them all out last year in evo? :psyduck:

I was converted from Melee like... 3 years ago, though that was just because my melee friends went to community college, and my friends I met in my not community college played guilty gear. It took me about a year of convincing to switch, and the convincing mostly came from first playing Melty Blood with Guilty Gear when we were bored. It was kinda funny because at first I was trying to convert my friends to smash.
