NOOOOOO WHERE IS VALK'S HOHENHEIM COLOR?!!!!!
-
You are missing the point of the analogy. In order to know their tools you have to know their application. How can you understand how to apply something without applying it yourself. Again, you may know that a scalpel cuts but that's different than knowing how to cut with a scalpel. We are just going in circles; trying to make our point clearer to the other person, but we both perceive things at different focal lengths, so we probably won't see eye to eye. I need rest.

I mean no offense by this but the amount of substance you can draw from spectating is so small and hypothetical it to me seems meaningless to say until a more flushed out informative opinion can be made. So yeah you may know what a scalpel is but do you know how to open the skull and which part of the brain is safe to operate? There is a huge part of the picture you are missing, called experience, and so yeah you may have played Extend but you haven't played Izayoi and CP has had some pretty significant mechanic changes you just can't create a good enough frame of reference to fit an understanding of these newa additions. You aren't teaching him but you are doing the next closest thing and that is advising him based on weak information.

@Volpe: It's great that you can pick your main just by spectating, but when you give Star gameplay reasons as to who he should pick it just seems contradictory. You don't know the effect of how a character will play until you have played said character. It's like saying, "I saw a doctor do brain surgery so now I am credible enough to teach others how to perform it".
-
Sigh...I guess you guys play videogames vicariously...
-
That's not the point. He won't know how Izayoi or Noel plays until he actually plays them himself. Either character might look fun but they might not feel fun, and at least to me, it actually being fun is more important. I can understand making a choice between two characters who have been in previous BB iterations since you know how their general playstyle is like and you can form a knowledgeable opinion, but Izayoi is a new character. This of course is assuming you are choosing based on gameplay. And it's not like playing multiple characters is a deficit. Playing a little bit of Jin, Haz, Makoto, Relius, and Rags helped me learn the matchup with Bang in ways I couldn't have from playing against them, reading from data or watching vids. When you play as other characters you are put in situations that make you struggle and that helps expose their weaknesses. So when I play with Bang I have more confidence in what situations I have the upper hand.
-
Lol. Didn't know you guys played CP already.

Omg lol what a weird glitch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqmTip8-GbE&t=1m36s

So basically Tad is going to be sitting next to a naked Star FOREVER. I would sooner bite my dick off and choke on it if I was Tad.

inb4 bullshit excuse.

Man CP looks a lot faster than CS especially when you watch the same match one after the other. Here is a great Bang mirror in CP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUrUHjJUdbs&t=105m56s Here is a bang mirror in CS1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYJTq9IiWJM Then again Bang might be a bad example since he's always kind of fast.

The window to jump cancel is smaller in GG, you have to press the up input closer to when the move actually hits, and that's because it would be a lot harder to do jump install if the game buffered the jump cancel a lot earlier like in BB. Once you get used to it, it won't feel less responsive.

Also, thanks Volpe for listening and also for asking me for my thoughts, because in doing so I had to think about how to explain my reasoning and by doing that I had to investigate what I learned which made my own understanding clearer to me.
-
I also felt that these concepts were self-evident, at first, but really it was partially because what they say made so much sense that it felt like I knew about it all along, as if it was second nature. I do think I had the basic framework of the kinds of concepts they were talking about but that was all I had. They helped fill in a lot of blanks and provided me with more detail as to why I agreed with them. When my framework of these concepts were detailed with their explanations it painted a new picture and made me learn something new. So what I got out of it was two things: a)To trust my hunches more and to give myself more time to investigate ideas I may doubt at first. b)To be more considerate of other's ideas, even if what they say doesn't make sense to me, because like mine they could be hunches that lead to great new ideas. And like mine they also need to be given ample time to study. Sometimes even more because they weren't build with your mind's framework so it takes some more time to convert and format their idea into your brain's hard drive. That's not to say I haven't been doing those two things already. It's just I haven't been doing it enough and when I have there was doubt if it was the proper approach. That by combining both a) and b) you immensely increase your ability to come up with new ideas. As it pertains to me in fighting games I started to watch top japanese Johnny players play like Satou, DC, etc. and then tried to mimic their playstyles. I didn't mimic their playstyles as a means to win or to be used as my playstyle. I used them to understand broad concepts of Johnny like general spacing habits, general situations to toss coins, etc.Their is a difference between this and just watching vids of players playing. You will never be like Satou, or DC, etc. because everyone differs in the application of the same pool of knowledge so it is pointless to mimic their style to win. However what you can do when you watch Satou, DC, etc is being able to identify what the general principles they all follow by and thus create a detailed theme of the character which is really important when you are beginning to learn a character. As it pertains to fighting game community, and for all communities for that matter, is that we need to be more empathizing of other people's ideas instead of creating a stigma of harsh and pessimistic criticism. So the next time Star says something ridiculous, like "UNiB is a good game", I'm going to be more optimistic and be like "well its got the guard libra that's cool" instead of "its got Seth"

EVERYONE LISTEN!!!!!!! good. We all in one way or another can appreciate creativity and innovation especially when it relates to fighting games. There is this great program on NPR which talks about the creation of ideas and where they come from and after listening to it I have a new found perspective on innovation. It felt more universal, as if anyone in the world is capable of coming up with great new ideas and it helped motivate me and give me confidence in trying out new things in Gear which greatly boosted my ability to learn this game. So, as a Christmas present to me please listen to this http://www.npr.org/2012/06/06/154448804/where-ideas-come-from with your undivided attention. It may take some time before you understand the parallels between the topics they discuss and how it pertains to us as the fighting game community but nonetheless if anything you educated your minds a little bit more. Please do find the time to listen to it. It's really intriguing and I feel atleast some of you will appreciate it.

I'll be at Game Galaxy Tomorrow!!!!
-
Why don't you go to Game Galaxy saturday? There is a GG tourney but maybe some people will play Persona.
-
OD duration is always dependent on how much health you have, but the duration of an overdrive cancel (which is an activation that happens from canceling a normal into overdrive) is shorter than a raw overdrive activation.
-
It doesn't have to be "e-sports tier" for it to warrant balance. Bullshit is only fun for so long. Eventually you learn that you are playing with dirt.
-
I want to be an optimist and say OD isn't as broken as it might seem. Yes the damage numbers are high but there are a lot of weaknesses to OD. In the video where Mu does 10k, she didn't overdrive cancel from a normal which would have drastically decreased the amount of time she is in OD which would also drop the damage. This means that 10k isn't guaranteed from a hit confirm. Second, to get that high damage she did a raw detonation point blank. It's rare to get hit by a raw detonation like that especially since it's so risky to do it up close. Point is her and most characters, minus Azrael, hakumen, and other characters designed to hit hard, for that matter who will have a big damaging combo in OD have to use a slow ass move with great P1 proration to do that big damage. Chances of this happening isn't very often. Also if you burn OD on a combo you lose your burst and like KOF's HD mode, once you burn that valuable resource you are operating at a deficit versus the other guy who still has his. So going into the next round the opponent can combo you without having to worry about your burst and then if needed can finish you off with his overdrive. Not to mention as the game continues to get played, players will get used to what normals lead into big overdrive cancel combos and will burst before the overdrive cancel happens. Like hakumen for example, when you get hit by tsubaki and he is about to start setting up his overdrive combo you can burst after tsubaki while he is still recovering and he can't bait the burst unless he wants to rapid. With how easy it is to run away from your opponent in this game, Running out a raw overdrive activation is not that difficult for a lot of the characters. It's overdrive cancel combos that worry me but the reduction of overdrive duration from a OD cancel makes me hopeful that characters can't break out 0 to death combos from a hitconfirm. Edit: nvm just saw a video where she does the detonation loop from fullscreen. Idk how I feel about that..

Is BHS unblockable on aerial opponent if high weakpoint is applied?

I prefer it if we went as a group instead of sending an individual person. The most expensive part about going to a tourney is the hotel. If we went as a group and split the room cost it would be cheaper for each individual. We could also save on gas by going together. The more that come the cheaper it is for everyone. That's a win-win. Food is cheap. Fast food or chain restaurant. Tourney fees can be expensive if you are entering multiple games with large pots (depends on the tournament) If money is an issue focus on one game to practice and enter only that game. We just need to mark a tournament a good number of us would be willing to attend, calculate the costs, give ample time for us to make room on our calendars and to gather the necessary funds. If someone has the time but not the money to attend the tournament, I'd be willing to help as long as enough other people with jobs would be willing to pitch in to. I would limit the donation to two individuals, if not possible then one. After they attend a tournament we helped them go to they are not eligible for the next donation drive, it will be someone else's turn who hasn't attended a tournament. You are only eligible for the donation drive if a) you don't have a job and b)you aren't a rich little fucker Big tournaments are a really great experience. You meet great people, make new friends, and be around a bunch of people who love the game you play just as much as you do. That's why I want as many of us as possible to experience that.

Uri screw that sponsor. I can hook you up with real legit ones. I got Star sponsored by Coca Cola and they provide him free powerade. I'm currently sponsored by Kelloggs and Trojan condoms. I'm currently in talks with Victoria Secret. Gonna get a special gamer lingerie lineup. Ya know for dem gamer gurls. Right now I can get you a Dollar General sponsorship. You start small, place in some tournaments and then we'll talk about the big leagues like Viagra and the Mexican drug cartel. The sky's the limit kid.

Every version of Carl is like that. Get hit once you're fucked.

I swear THIS post is: a) not going to help persuade anyone to listen to your opinions and b) does not contribute anything substantial to the discussion. all you are doing is being an asshole. With regard to UNiB, all I can judge from spectating is that everyone has meterless huge ass midscreen combos that happen way too often. In GG, most characters have to either be in the corner, have meter, or get a counter hit with a slow ass move with good p1 proration to get big damage. Point is GG makes them more situational and A LOT less frequent than in UNiB. And the characters you see that commonly do big damage like Johnny, Slayer, Potemkin do because it's part of their design but even then they have to use resources and their damage output is compensated by their lack of mobility options, slow normals, etc.
