Montreal: Le Thread Generale Pour Weeaboo Fighters

Weekly News Post No tournament this week, just a good old meetup at our place, Friday, 6:30pm onwards. Made a poll after last week's tournament to have an idea what you guys want to see added (in addition to xrd and bbcp), so far the standings are : 16 - UNIEL 10 - AC+R 8 - P4U 6 - Melty rest is low (sg, ah3, dfc, ap, sfxt, skm, cc) What I think we'll do next week is run BBCP first, then Xrd, and then whatever we have time for, in the order of the votes. So, don't forget to vote if you haven't! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1532700160322692/ -

First Bi-Weekly happened yesterday, I think it worked out pretty well. If you have any feedback, please let us know, we're still figuring this out. Always great to see new blood as well, hope you guys keep coming! Things ran on tournament standard time (mostly my fault), so we couldn't even run uniel and some ppl had to leave before bbcp. Anyway, we'll do better on that next time, and we're changing the venue format to 5$ venue, free tournaments. We'd also like to see what other games people would be interested in having at these bi-weeklies. Made a poll on Facebook, but if you don't have a facebook account you can always reply in this sankishin thread so it doesn't get lost : http://www.sankishin.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=303 GG Xrd : http://challonge.com/mtlad1ggxrd (final score is wrong) 1. ^That's actually pretty hype. If ASW is handling the port, I hope it means they'll do it for their other games too. PC port not only gives the game much more exposure, but sometimes having laptops run the games makes it easier to have more setups a meetup or tournament (although they're usually slightly harder to get sticks and controllers to work with them). On that note, I hope people are bringing equipment tomorrow, haven't heard much D: don't forget your RCA a/v cables. Sticks and controllers too obv. -

Weekly News Post? Hi guys, finally did a few of the things I said I'd do. New Facebook group : https://www.facebook.com/groups/1532700160322692/ please join it, and use it for whatever. Main intent is to help give us better exposure, so just don't scare away the new people (ex: no sadpanda) 1st tournament is happening this friday, for more details, FB Event : https://www.facebook.com/events/563970977073184/563972383739710/ Dustloop : http://www.dustloop.com/forums/index.php?/topic/10334-jan-23-1st-airdasher-tournament-smashloft-montreal-canada/ Anyway, hope lots of you make it to the tournament, we'll kind of use it to gauge interest and local hype for the following ones. We can finally start trying to expand the scene a little bit now that our venue isn't our small apartment. @Toronto : yo there might be a tournament in Ottawa some time in February we're planning on going to. Hope you guys can make it, cause a few of us won't be coming to Toryuken due to being in Japan for KSB -
New venue : SmashLoft! 2000 Avenue Northcliffe, Suite #106, Montreal, Quebec H4A 3K5 Facebook Event : https://www.facebook.com/events/563970977073184/563972383739710 First local tournament we have since August, hope lots of you bring the hype so we can start getting good again! Version en francais en dessous. Entry fee 5$ Soft drinks 1$ Schedule : 5pm Venue opens 7pm GGXrd start (double elimination, 2/3 matches) 8pm BBCP, UNIEL start (both single elimination, 1 match) ?pm Venue closes (last metro is around midnight if you're heading east) IMPORTANT : We'll need people to bring equipment. Most setups there are CRTs, so I'm bringing a monitor+PS3 for the main station. If you're bringing a PS3, make sure to bring at least the RCA output cable, if you can't bring a monitor. Bring your sticks too please! Seriously no idea how many we'll need nor how many we'll have since it's the first time, but if you could post and let us know ahead what you're bringing it would be awesome! So, there should be lots of time for casuals, maybe we'll run other games, if there's local interest. I really want to support other games such as AH3, DFC, Melty... but let's at least start simple. Since it's a new place for us, we're not sure what the ideal format and schedule are. I know some people specifically won't be able to be there early enough for the tournaments' start, but without the knowledge of how many stations we'll have and how long they will take to run, I want to play it safe this week. There should be a stream, I'll post details when we figure that out. We'll try to stream most of GG, and then BB and UNIEL top 4, then whatever exhibitions.

Yo mtl poverty revival?? (can we say it existed for the small period where there was me, level5, greenix, greg, and vince playing melty a bit?) @Nedel : tu nous manques aussi @Linear : in french it would be like CCEC (Championat de la Cote Est Canadienne). in mtl french we'd probably just call it "le tournoi a toronto criss" edit : oh yeah, got a reply for smash loft, looks like it'll happen on the 23rd, more details to come. -
Longer stein startup is a nerf, no denying that. I'm saying there are buffs too, and the character still looks strong. I think our difference in opinion on Totsuka is based on the intent behind our use of it. I just want a projectile to stay out there for a while, so I can get in or control space, not really hit them. The longer it stays out, the better for me. I really liked BBCS totsuka because it was very slow. Even if they were to avoid it, it's usually with a jump or some air options, which limits their options afterwards, and that's to my advantage. Knowing the last hit is directed at them, even if I go in and get hit, the laser could come back and save me. I think the changes to this version make that part even stronger. If you're basing most of your argument on that set, I don't think it's a very strong argument. Don't look at the results, but rather how the tools are used, and the options they give the players. If you have the time, check out these matches, from Lava : http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm25233760 I think he plays okay (although I don't like how he plays those matchups), does some questionable decisions, maybe stressed due to the fact it's a tournament, but I think it shows nicely more of the options Mu recieved in BBCP 2.0. (if you don't have a niconico account, use this http://www.mmcafe.com/nico.html . I don't think this tournament is on Youtube. He plays 3 matches, vs a Tager, Kagura, and Rachel) One thing I felt from that set was that Mu gains a lot more from a blocked 5c than she does in the current version. Lava does 5c 5[d] 6c into whatever, and later uses the shot from 5[d] to cover either an approach or prevent them from moving forward. I don't think these terms are defined anywhere, but for the sake of explaining, I believe you wish Mu was more of a Hybrid zoner. Can we agree on these definitions for now : -Rushdown character : moves forward, tries to get you to block one of their attacks so they can start their offence. (ex : Ragna wants to get you to block something like 5b or j.c. Off 5b he can 2c to whiff, recover fast, and dash in, or deadspike-dashcancel/deathscythe to move in even closer, where he starts his pressure game) -Zoning character : uses long ranged moves to prevent other characters from approaching them. Uses blocked attacks to return to a long ranged position. (ex : Nu uses 5d and 6d to push the opponent out. If they get hit, Nu is rewarded. She still has mixup and offence to a certain degree if she gets you to block up close or a knockdown) -Mu : uses long ranged attacks to prevent the opponent from getting in. Also sets up delayed projectiles that can help both in getting in and keeping the opponent out, depending on the matchup. If that's not a hybrid, I don't know what you're looking for. ps : The Litchi vs Mu matchup has always been a really interesting one. Both characters have tools that counter each others' tools really well. For the longest time I was sure it was a strong advantage for Litchi because of how she well she can counter our standard game plan. I don't think it's the best matchup to look at to see how well our tools are doing.

Hi. It's unfortunate that the stronger Mu players aren't as active (Sakuma/Keba, Hoan/Gilgamesh, Abarenja). I asked Dora who the strong Mu players in 2.0 were, he says he can only think of H.H. IMO he's a strong player, but it's really hard to judge a character from watching only one player play, especially with a character as versatile as Mu. I think it was actually Dio's BBCP 1.0 Mu play that I found most interesting, initially (for bbcp). Fullscreen steins : it was kinda dumb. I'll see how much it impacts the game when I get to play it, but I see that as a really smart way to keep them as strong as they are now (level increased from BBCS, usually low risk), without making them as painful for other characters to deal with. I didn't like the laser fortress much because, while it didn't chip, it still did kind of force the opponent to take action, putting them at some risk while yours is very low. It was a very oppressive strategy that wasn't hard to execute, and really hard/frustrating for the opponent. That's not "zoning", that's "character armor" imo. The fact that they added normal cancels on them gives me an impression that they're much stronger now, as a zoning tool. In the current and previous versions, you'd usually cancel steins into jump/air backdash to avoid the enemy, or DP, which is kind of a big gamble (unless you already have other steins set up). By allowing you to cancel into normals instead, there's another threat you can use to keep them out. It seems kind of ridiculous. One of the things that struck me from the H.H vs Mio set was how he was using j.d j.2c to stop his momentum and then bait the anti air. It's faster than I thought, there's probably a ton of other applications. In matchups against many characters, especially those with high mobility, I feel like this option of cancelling steins into normals is much more useful. Since you don't put out that many steins, and want to use them mostly to prevent the opponent from moving in. Range isn't that much of an issue, maybe it also makes the matchup easier for other players to learn. Instead of "just learn the timing, try to move before it activates to make it whiff." becomes "you can just learn the range and stay out of it. It's a lot slower now too. Just be careful of the normal cancels." Agreed that the slower timings kinda suck, and it'll take a while to get used to (seriously, one of the reasons I don't grind this game much these days is I know this is changing, and knowing the timings is something I try to focus on). Maybe they changed it with the new combos in mind? Pressure-wise it seems really interesting, but even zoning-wise, while it sounds like a nerf, you have to consider the totsuka buff. I don't know why you think it's a nerf, maybe you didn't understand it? (maybe I didn't :o) I get the impression that it travels at the same speed, but stays longer on each stein before moving to the next. What this means is that if you do something like 6d/2d 236d where it goes far, it'll get to the opponent at the same speed. The difference is it'll stay there longer, so right now, it just comes back right away, and it goes back and forth so fast that it's harder to take advantage of. This way, you get the same strengths in covering space, but you get more from it! I'm not sure what your issue with Ikutachi is. I mean, cancelling into steins was mid-combo only. Now we can do stuff like combo into 2c, place a stein, continue the combo. So we can still do combos where we set steins in the middle, and not only in the corner. The ikutachi change is pretty interesting, I feel like it gives us more options in terms of combo selection. I haven't checked the numbers because there's most likely still a lot of optimization to do on all these combos, but I have the impression it'll be like "do I want more corner carry" vs "do I want the more damaging easier route, but lose the corner". If you know you won't get them close to the corner, the second option might be better. The 6b change is AWESOME. I don't know about you, but I know this scenario happens to me : zone the guy out well, win neutral (for that round), get in, start doing pressure, go for the overhead, guy instant blocks it. Now I'm at a super disadvantage where he'll hit 5a, essentially being safe against 6b 5d DP, and punishing me if I do nothing. Gets the hit, knocks me down, sets the plays, takes the match. So then I really stopped doing 6b as much, since I don't want to put myself at a risk for no reason. Then you watch another Mu player hit people with so many 6b you're like damn this guy is just going ham, but I can't play like that D: The change has two great parts to it. First, you can gatling after, meaning you shouldn't get punished for having it get blocked. Sure if the guy reads it he should be able to reversal, but that's always been the case. The move itself also moves you forward, so you can generally keep pressing the advantage. The second part, is that for only the second part to hit, you need a certain spacing. Note that the speed on the second hit only version is the same as the current speed of the first hit, I believe. The impression I get is that the spacing itself isn't very hard, so it's more like something you have to get used to, rather than something you have to grind out. It's not like you run out of options when close either. With late gatlings, frametraps are always a thing. This sometimes allows you to dash in for throws, when the opponent is expecting a late chain. I don't know if j.2c as throw bait is still a thing, but TRM is always there. That makes me wonder if j.b j.2c is still a thing too, that would be another unfortunate loss, but you can't have everything. TLDR : Mu should still dominate at the same ranges, except fullscreen, but that really doesn't matter. I don't think the way matchups will be played will be so different that she won't feel like she always did. Her offence also got much stronger and more interesting. Slower steins kinda sucks, but cancelling into normals and other buffs make up for it IMO, both on a zoning and rushdown point of view. (I hope this makes sense, don't hesitate to ask questions)

Weekly News Post As usual this week, we'll be hosting a meetup on Friday. I'll be more strict about lowering the volume starting at midnight, don't really want to get a noise complaint again. That said, we have some new furniture for the living room, as well as a set of pillows for people who want to stay over, so get hype for that. No other meetups planned for this week, but we never know. There's a Street Fighter 4 tournament this Saturday, it's a bus ride from Cote-Vertu metro, I was interested in going. From the description on the Facebook event, it seems too small to run an Xrd side event though. https://www.facebook.com/events/828165203908190/?ref=4 For the stream monsters, there are three big events this weekend. KiT is the first Xrd major (I think), and with 90+ preregs and a lot of recognizable names, it should be a good one. There's also Canada Cup Gaming's Master Series, an 8-man round robin of FT7s between some of the best SF4 players. Finally, Cooperation Cup 13, this 430 player 3rd Strike 5v5 tournament is happening this weekend too! Might also check out the Smash4 weekly. Anyone else from here going? Finally, I think people still owe money to either me or DerQ for NEC. I know I owe him lol. Won't make a list, you guys know who you are. No rush but don't forget to pay us back heh... -

We played it. Then xrd came out and we stopped playing anything else. It's kind of nice that everyone at the meetups is playing the same game though
