Yeah I kinda already made this mistake already... except it was completely on my end when I showed up at Sanoshi's ready for WNF last tuesday... Lol. Np! Glad to help save some gas money. I know I haven't came out in awhile but I should be there for sure tonight.

Pretty much the same time IIRC. I went last week. Starts around 8-9:30. Thanks for the info Shingin.

Hey, is this moving to Thursday from now on? It's what I've heard but I wanted to confirm instead of just heading out tomorrow night.

Advice to someone who can't attend casuals/gatherings, only tournaments?
Shazam replied to miller483's topic in Beginner Mode
If anybody lives close to you hit them up for casuals outside of the gatherings. If you have a good connection then playing online against good players (can be hard to find) is much better than fighting CPU. Showing up early and hanging around afterwords for casuals is always a good idea. -
That's not too bad of a pad setup and if you were to keep it like that then using the first default setting will probably feel like a natural transition. You should just keep it how it is until you get your new controller I think, so you'll be making the switch to the new setup and having each finger on a different button at the same time. Some people don't like stick but a good majority of competitive players prefer it to pad. It doesn't give you any special powers, and if you're like me it'll take a long time to get used to it, but it is more comfortable for playing really long sessions without your fingers getting tired. I used to play on arcade cabinets so there was always the appeal to switch but it was more of a matter of not being able to afford it. I liked playing on pad while I had to, my long sessions resulted in a callous so my thumb stopped hurting soon enough. I can still play on pad and my execution is just as strong, but playing on stick feels more legit, it's also more fun for me.

Are those the right ones? They don't appear to have USB attachments like the one in the video. There's probably a converter out there though. I dunno, I think the smooth one looks nicer but that's just me. Edit: Also wanted to mention, the default layout for BB would be, directly from stick BCD A or alternatively, like I use ABC D That one without adapter is too expensive. I've brought my ps2 pad/psx to usb converter to tourneys with no problem, it's definitely not that bad, and it'll be about 20 bucks cheaper.

If by the square one you mean the one that looks like a Dreamcast controller then, I would say go with the Saturn one. The DC one, if it's the same pad as the official DC pad, is pretty nice, but the controller itself is a little dated and lends itself to DC specific titles more so than a fighter. So, your options are: DC -A very nice 'default' style pad -Regular buttons that won't allow for overhand use -Lack of multiple trigger buttons for mapping many shortcuts Saturn -Different d-pad, possibly similar to PSP? Either way it'll do anything you need to do -Big buttons with a setup that works for overhand or just your thumb -Again only has two trigger buttons but it does have 6 face buttons which helps for other games like Skullgirls/GG/AH3 So it's really what you want, there are a lot of things to factor in but it all comes down to your personal preference.

I can't really compare that to PSP, but it looks like it'll hold up well for BB. One thing that I really like about Sega controllers is that they have a nice and wide face plate under the buttons and the buttons themselves are bigger than normal. This means you can play overhand style, almost like a stick, with ease. It'll be fine for BB or P4A. Another note, PS3 pads are not that bad for BB. It takes a little while for the pad to wear in to how you play but from there it's smooth sailing. Though I prefer playing on the ones without any vibration as it feels a little different for me. Something to consider or at least keep in mind for back-up reasons.

Well, since the 100 man hype seems to have calmed down, the tourneys don't run quite as long. The first one went until like 2AM or later but the last one ended right around midnight IIRC, I was just watching the stream. The tourney usually starts around 9 and signups don't close until it starts, so yeah. It's your call

The one time I actually had it down it was due to following Zeron's help, you have to delay each 5c link a tiiiny bit more than the last. I pretty much gave up on it though, actually since P4A came out I haven't played BB at all. I'll be back to it soon, maybe I'll have better luck learning it properly this time. Though I've heard a rumor that hirentotsu loops don't even work in the new BB. Oh well, dat stance backdash is still making me happy.

Every pad player Carl I've ever met has had the D button mapped to R1. I've been suggesting to people to try out different combinations regarding mapping, like this: A (X) B ([]) C (R1) D (R2) This layout or any variation of it is to avoid having to make any awkward thumb changes while you play. Some people don't mind tapping two buttons at once but for others it's too much trouble. After trying it out on pad myself, IMO it's pretty well translated with just the default settings. I think the game maps B+D to L1 and A+C to R1 for you and the other multi-taps are easy to do if you just adjust your thumb (or map to r2/l2) - buy a different pad if you want to use your fingers for buttons, I played BB on pad for about a year and just played with my thumb. DS3/Xbox360 pad buttons are just way too small to try and overhand it for me and my hands are already small.

So you made your account just to say thanks? Wow, now I can consider this guide a success. I'm glad to help, when I first started playing Hazama during late CS1 the only info thread was a more straight forward and basically wiki-like rundown of him, the good info was scattered but it was out there. Good luck to you, and keep at it!

If a couple of us got together and made an awesome video tutorial that would probably rekindle a few flames. As much as I loved watching 2 hours of James, Chen and UltraDavid talk about and play Persona it's not really a 'tutorial' it's more of a character explanation guide. It would be great to have each character's segments broken up and then uploaded to seperate videos for easy reference. In our tutorial we could go over different movement options, air dasher footsies, what to do on wake-up both offensively and defensively, using proper spacing and why you shouldn't mash, committing to anti-airs, stuff like that. I feel like we could get a lot of information out there in a 20-30 minute window, or even less, and it would basically be the go-to guide for people interested in this game. We make it friendly, we make it hype, and help everyone who's never played a game like this tremendously. Perhaps we could have someone with a lot of Capcom experience to talk about how differently the games play and why, despite all the shit talkers, it's still a really good game. I would like to help out however I could and I have a few ideas to throw around but I'm sure if just a small group got together and brain stormed beforehand we could have a great introductory guide to P4A. To save possible time and hassle I'd suggest that we try and do this at the next Super Arcade event but it might end up being more hassle that way, I can't really say. We could always go in on a console casuals Friday night and set something up that way. I'll continue to support the scene as consistently as possible, I think these games are a lot of fun to watch and play, and I hope this game stays strong.

I was just thinking, if theres a 20 frame break window then why am I rarely teching throws? The startup to throws isn't really much of a visual cue so yeah, it's much more about reading patterns and watching your foe. While TRM is indeed another form of mixup, it just makes more sense to throw break when both players go for throw. It's a mindgame and it's great for conditioning, but if characters have such weak mixup that they have to rely on TRM to get an opening then maybe they should have better mixup options. I only really see Jin as someone who would 'need' it because of how strong his throw game is and lack of solid mixup otherwise.

That's all pretty agreeable to be honest. I think Tager should only have 8 or 9 primers though, it's almost impossible to actually go for a guard crush against Tager who can just block and block. The worst thing about Tager is that he's too easy to lame out by, well, the exact characters I mentioned, and more. This is more about bad character design than TRM or Primers. He can still pull the wins but it's and more or less through raw yomi. Doesn't help when your opponent gets 1 hit on you and then runs away the whole match. It's so easy to lose just because you picked Tager. Onto gold bursts, they are pretty insane. I guess how good they are is something else to make you reconsider using your bursts, but the fact that they can only be punished if they somehow whiff is bad design. I think the only character who can read and punish gold burst is Hakumen with his drive or even getting lucky and cutting one. Another problem with bursts is no burst meter or regain. They definitely want you to -think- before you burst instead of doing it at the start of the match like GG. I'm hoping we get end up with a burst meter in the new BB personally.

So, I just don't like TRM because it feels clunky and overthought for a throw system. Teching throws is fine, but I think that punishing people for making the right guess is dumb. Although I did see your point that they shouldn't be guessing, but still, having to work a somewhat complex OS into your basic defense to me is a problem... It also doesn't translate very well for pad players, I for one never even attempted any OS until I switched to stick. This could be my own shortcoming but I'm sure some other pad players feel the same. Tick throws are really strong in BB but I'd rather just keep it simple and Persona does that perfectly IMO, still allows for tick throws but no TRM. On primers, well, I'm not sure how I would do it, but Tager having SO MANY of them is just dumb. Then characters like Hazama and Valkenhayn who need to have a strong defense get jewed over with only 4. I understand that Tager will have to inevitably block more than these guys by design but having 3 times the primers is practically a huge joke. As a low primer character you basically have to not use your barrier against someone like Noel who will absolutely go for those guard crushes especially after you green burst. Save it for when you need it. I think it's much better than Libra ever was but as it is it feels dated. On the plus side, usually when you see a guard crush happen in pro play, the first thing you do is look at his barrier meter and notice that it was almost full. It can lead to interesting situations but overall it feels like we haven't gotten any real upgrades to the primer system since CT > CS. I don't like how green bursts take half of your primers either.

Bingo. Look for an opening and take it. Your best bet is to IB those traps and as many bullets as possible, and try not to block or get hit by the 5th bullet. Zio will be okay sparingly but bullets do beat it. You can use the 214b/j214b to try to get around them and from early testing it seems 214a is -1 on block and 214b has + frames, so they're not exactly punishable (not sure if this was tested on the air versions as well). Take advantage of your decent speed and long range normals, lock her down when you get in.

On why people who usually don't like air dashers bought Persona: It's a fast paced, new fighting game. They might have looked into the mechanics and thought they seemed cool. They have probably played Persona 3 or 4, or like me, have played other SMT games. It's like a dream come true. This would also mean they're already familiar with characters and have character love, making it even more appealing. They've secretly known all along that their games are Japanese as well and even have air dashing in some of them. As far as BlazBlue getting hate, I can see why. The game is basically a meta-ironic Guilty Gear, I've heard the cast described as a wheel of cliches among other things, people generally don't like the characters. They tend to have just glanced at it without giving it a second chance though. When CT first came out, it was unpolished and unfinished. It was also broken. This didn't stop it from being fun, but we were outshined by SF4 and shunned for ice car spam, and competitive gameplay being dominated by top tiers. We're on the 3rd version of the same game. We also seem to get releases right around the time new Capcom fighters are coming out, strangely enough. Poor us. Coming back to the characters... Many people think that the game just tries to be GG and fails miserably. Certain character designs, both gameplay and otherwise, are just god awful. To me it's part of the saltiness and fun, but some people really get into the negativity. The mechanics are, simply put, outdated. Throw reject miss is a terrible system, primers need to be revamped or removed, gold burst is +4, etc. This quote represents how GG players feel about BB. So we have a community divided, and with little to no interest in the game... well, there's nowhere to go. After being removed from the Evo mainstage, we got just over 80 people at the side tourney, which is not a lot. So all that said, Persona is a fresh game with elements from both BB, and GG, with it's own unique ones as well. It seems to have learned from the mistakes of BlazBlue, outsold BlazBlue, and, in a way, with it's success it shined a new light onto it and will attract new players for sure. In Persona the dreaded Throw Reject Miss is gone, okizeme is really strong, and every character is viable. The removal of FD/barrier and making true air unblockable anti-airs has made it more aggressive than BB. I have to agree with Dacidbro and say the mechanics are a great improvement. This game is well worth it if you can find a copy, the online is booming and the netcode is really, really solid. Apparently people are even playing it offline in places

Shoutouts to getting baited and missing out on the Persona finals with all the other stream monsters. I'm really salty as a Kanji player now that The Biter finally WON, and it wasn't recorded. Good stream outside of that, other than the swarming shitswamp of what's called a stream chat of fighting game players... I was really impressed with some of your gameplay though, keep it up guys. I'm mostly salty towards myself for not being there to see finals live. I shouldn't have let a headache stop me from coming. 1/3 turnout yeah. Has the hype already died? Will people outside of the dustloop community keep playing this game at all? I feel like a bunch of hotheaded Marvel players are trying to bring down the hype as much as possible, either out of fear or just straight up disrespect towards us/our games. I don't know what to do about it. I think as a community we should take a stand and basically say "Hey, shut the fuck up." but how? I mean we would of course love to see P4A on main stage at Evo and we want to see tournaments thrive after the first week, but we have to step up now more than ever, and at this point it feels like we actually have a chance.

I spent some time learning this earlier, I got it a few times. I just tried it on pad and it was much easier with A+C mapped to R1. It's not necessary to IAD and can be done from a regular air dash, but it is best to do the cancels as early as possible. I would compare the kara cancel to a in that you cancel during the first few frames of startup of j.2b. It's actually not that hard with a bit of practice, and so much easier on pad for me... >_<

Finally SoCal gets anime weeklies. I really love these big turnouts.

Just curious but what's default setting, and are we allowed to counter pick characters?

You need to go under them and move it back and forth a little, get them to the top of the tornado so that they fall with you and you can't get punished. I've been punished for using it in a combo, it's because I wasn't controlling it properly.
